[Speculation] Del Zotto, Cole could be coming to Vancouver

The author of the article is an NHL analyst for Forbes SportsMoney and (obviously) a writer for The Hockey Writers.

In his deadline summary, he writes...

Erik Cole (Dallas) to Vancouver: As usual, the Dallas Stars are stuck in the middle. Not good enough for the playoffs; not bad enough to be definite deadline sellers. They’ll eventually decide to clear the decks and Cole will be shipped out. Vancouver is on the other end. They’re hanging onto a playoff spot and need a spark to stay in contention.

Michael Del Zotto (Philadelphia) to Vancouver: Even before Alex Edler went down with an injury, I thought Del Zotto would be a good fit in Vancouver. Edler has bounced back as one of the Canucks’ best players this season. If he’s out for an extended period of time, that’s a huge blow. Del Zotto has been playing some good hockey in Philadelphia lately and would at least fill the void on the Canucks’ powerplay.

How would you guys feel about this?

Cole has a caphit of 4.5m, but he's a UFA at the end of the season. He's also 36, and a left winger. Could be a great, chippy addition to add some points. 15 goals and 13 assists so far this year on a mediocre Stars team. He might bring some leadership in, but... He has 14 points in 46 career NHL playoff games and is a -11. I think the Canucks should pass.

Del Zotto is only a caphit of 1.3m, and he's also a UFA at the end of the season. He's only 24, has a lot of upside, and would probably come fairly cheap. He has 12 points in 32 playoff games, and 147 points in 362 career regular season games. He's on about the pace to beat or match his best regular season, sitting at 21 points through 45 games this year. Another LHD, though.

Will be interesting to see what happens. Would love MDZ - he's got the potential to be a core Canuck for years to come, but pass a thousand times on Cole.

not unless it's a swap of useless veteran player for useless veteran player

No thank you to Erik Cole. Washed up.

Del Zotto is interesting but that'll create an even bigger logjam on D

You're assuming that the Canucks wouldn't be shipping a D back, maybe Sbisa, along with a pick? That way Philly has a player to jump in straight away, the Canucks have an open spot, and Philly gets a pick to bolster their draft.

lol what did MdZ get traded to Phily for

As far as I remember, he signed as a UFA there.

Erik Cole for Chris Higgins + conditional pick (late-round pick if VAN re-signs Cole)

Cole has 28 points, Higgins has 26 - the difference is that Cole is a trigger man (15G), and Higgins is not (7G)

Another difference is that Cole is a UFA, while Higgins has term remaining on his contract. We could (and should) let Cole walk at the end of the season. DAL, meanwhile, gives up a rental for a roster player with term in case they still believe they could push for the playoffs, but at the same time, don't want to lose Cole for nothing in the summer

This is basically bolstering our playoff push without compromising our future by adding a goal-scoring middle 6 forward, while at the same time, making room for our young prospects for next season by acquiring a pending veteran UFA and shipping out a veteran with term remaining

Hmm, I'm iffy about Cole, at best. He's old and has an injury history. Even for rentals I'd rather go for someone younger (or we could have traded Higgins for Stafford?)

Del Zotto, sure dependent on the cost though. Don't want to spend so much on someone who may bust as soon as he's bloomed.

I refuse to overpay for Michael Del Zotto.

He has had so many chances to prove himself, but his history has shown a lot of controversy in terms of willingness and decision making. Sure, there is upside there, and a load of possibilities, but weighing pros and cons, I believe paying anything for Michael Del Zotto would be overpaying.

We get a goal scoring middle 6 forward rental for a snake-bitten middle 6 with term remaining. This is basically dumping Higgins off to another team without compromising our current playoff push and actually adding a goal scorer for the playoff push without compromising our future

Result is either an even older player for a year or Higgins gone for nothing.

Not getting older, no rentals coming in, and no picks going out.
