wallstreetamigo
Higgins is not a UFA at the end of the year which gives him more value, teams want players with term. That is not necessarily true actually. It depends on a lot of factors.
wallstreetamigo
Bringing in old washed up vets for this season makes no sense based on what Benning continually states he is trying to add. 23-26 year old players as building blocks for the next several years. Trading Higgins for a pick to trade a pick/prospect for Bergenheim is useless. The Canucks would be better off packaging Higgins at the draft. hsedin33
Can someone actually give me a legitimate reason as to why this might be a good idea for us? Depth. You can never have enough of it in the playoffs, especially with this injury prone team. I say go for it, a 3rd is fair value.

wallstreetamigo
Matthias is exactly the type of player that can help a team in the playoffs. A real contender would part with a late first for him. Paul Gaustad got a 1st round pick after all Bergenheim replaces what Higgins brought, and would probably benefit from a change of scenery. Bergenheim is also a pending UFA while Higgins is not, big difference. He also requested a trade which further reduces his value. The Gaustad comparison is apples to oranges. Completely different economic and salary cap environment for teams. A very deep draft. Those are two good ones.
Canuck Surfer
^^ Mathias is what, 6'4'' and about 220 lbs? Fast Doesn't hit all that hard, but fore-checks like a demon and is positive on the wall. Can play 2knd line in a pinch, strong 3rd liner. Plus can take the odd face off, score the off goal because he has soft hands. He'd get a late first!
ice orca
The big dogs who have a legit shot at the cup would love Mathias. He is a UFA and wont cost them on the cap next year unless they try to sign him. Benning said with the uncertanty of the loonie and the unknown cap next year GM's are keeping things close to the vest.
TOMapleLaughs
fwiw, Bergenheim has been Florida's Kassian this season, but he's been a bit more vocal about being benched due to him being UFA and all. He wants to go to a team that will play him no matter what. Is that us? Not really. We already have a revolving door for bottom-6ers here, plus injured guys who'll eventually be back. Comments from his coach on his effort: "If he gave 100% (vs Wild) he'd be playing tonight". Berg's agent responds: "Bergenheims agent demands trade, calls coachs comments disgraceful" Bergenheim looks like an puzzlingly entitled whiner and Florida has been playing well enough without him. I highly doubt we need that element here at all, let lone as a half-cooked rental.

thejazz97
Matthias for a 1st Higgins for a 2nd Trade a 4th and a C prospect for Bergenheim I can see Higgins for a 2nd, but Matthias is a UFA. Heck, Cody Franson was supposed to have garnered a 1st. I think we could probably trade Matthias + Sbisa for a 1st, but we need defensive depth and CDC just did a video about Sbisa's new place. bobbyg43
1. "We're not trading any more picks" -- Jim Benning 2. Third round pick this year already traded 3. Redundant add 4. Can't take on the cap McKenzie should know all this, and if it's still accurate, he should rightly be taken to the woodshed. I guess they wanna drum up some more Vancouver clicks and views. WTF AN TGIF we are plume full of third grinders enough already if gonna pick up a third at least let him be 22 -25 yrs old. This makes no sense at all we have no cap space whats his salary ? this is just stupid man.just my opinion I dont care what he did in his previous playoff runs this is a stinker

oldnews
Sestito as sweetener. I like Bergenheim - still has very good underlying numbers - among the best in Florida - has been reasonably productive in tweeter minutes.... But bringing him here doesn't make a whole lot of sense. thejazz97
McMillan for Bergenheim. Book that. Sestito as sweetener. Two waiver wire pickups for a bottom 9 grinder? I'll take that any day... unless the waiver wire pickup is actually quite good.
Canada Hockey Place
Bergenheim is a good, currently underachieving player who may fit here. But I hope VAN doesn't give up a lot. - VAN 3rd round pick was used in the Bonino/Sbisa trade. - FLA traded their 3rd to NYI for a 2014 3rd last season. - The draft is in FLA so they'll want picks. The price makes sense. I don't think VAN can afford it.
Grape
Cluuuuutch! Like Pahlsson, he's had his time in the playoffs. Doesn't mean it will happen again. Meanwhile, Florida's chasing Boston for the wildcard. Sellers? Not outright. Trying to find a sucker on an aging redundant asset? You bet. Lol that sounded weird, but true
Gaudette Celly
The plan to try and be competitive now while building for the future? Why not? Bergenheim is "be competitive for 25-30 games" (debatable at that) and "sacrifices future" by trading away a pick, that's why. Yea. They fill the "be competitive now" need. Bergenheim replaces what Higgins brought, and would probably benefit from a change of scenery. Bergenheim is also a pending UFA while Higgins is not, big difference. He also requested a trade which further reduces his value. Does Bergenheim for Higgins make this a better team? Consider the roles that Higgins plays outside of 5v5. The difference is ultimately surrendering a marketable asset and a draft pick for capspace. Not good management. What you've apparently misinterpreted from Benning's "compete now with an eye to the future" is that those are not mutually exclusive. That means, deals are NOT for rentals but players that helps now AND the future. Bonino yes, Vey yes, Clendening yes. Bergenheim, Cole, etc. NO. McMillan for Bergenheim. Book that. Much better! But might need that Sestito sweetener to offset capspace.
