Where will we get our cap space (Discussion)

Recommended Posts

Just finished reading A NEW BEGINNING's post and yeah, I wonder where will we get all the cap space we will need to sigh those contracts?

The easiest way in my view is to Trade a big name, big contract.......it really comes down to pay me now or pay me later........we have a choice of who we want to loose, until this summer, but teams will not give the return we expect, if we are under the gun.

My suggestion is to trade Vrbata at the deadline because:

#1. He only has 1 year left in his contract

#2. Would probably had a decent return to another playoff team

#3. He is 33 years old

#4 Trading his $5 million dollar contract gives us cap room to sign our RFA's and UFA's

#5. Regardless of his goals, both Burrows and Kassian have shown that they can play in his place......are they better? No, but they give us the capspace we need going forward.

Not trading him for picks will really put pressure on our cap space

I agree........would you rather keep Tanev and the other free agents or Vrbatta.........look! Benning could not have understood that the Canadian dollar was going to drop this much this year!

The cap just isn't going to go up that much IMO

Nah, Miller and Vrby will be dealt next deadline to a contender. We need to look at the aging core. Hamhuis, Bieksa, Higgins and Burrows all need to get long, hard looks. We know what they've done and are doing for this team, but we need to start planning for the future.

With the good performances of rookies like Kenins, Clendening, Vey and Horvat and possibly more coming up next year like Jensen. I'm pretty sure we'll save cap space because guys like Richardson, Matthias, Higgins, Hansen, won't all be coming back. And no one is really due for a big pay raise next year except Tanev. So it's not like Toews or Kane who will go from 6.5M cap hit to 10.2M. I really doubt we have cap problems in the next few years.

If we aren't a contender ourselves...

Coastal View

I challenge you to actually answer the question........just where do you think the cap is coming from? Answer it in full, not just a four word sentence.......like dig into it a little........show me!

your assumption that salaries will increase significantly without the cap going up

is based on whimsy

where will these players go

all teams are facing the same cap crunch

you are creating an issue that does not exist in reality

no one on our club is due a big raise

tanev is the only exception and we currently have cap space available

and the salary cap will likely increase by no less than 1.5 million

just because salaries normally increase each year

that is only because the cap does

if the cap does not. . good luck to those seeking salary increases

edit: and don't flatter yourself.. not every thread deserves a meaningful response

If we were in 10th-11th place then I'd say it would be smart to trade Vrbata... But the whole reason we signed him was to help us get into a playoff position and maybe play a couple rounds in the Playoffs.

Unless someone offered up an amazing trade that we couldn't refuse, Vrbata will remain a Canuck.

Next years Trade deadline we will most likely trade one oh Hamhuis or Bieksa and Sign the other. Both are UFAs after next season and we dont have the room or need to re-sign both of them

As for Vrbata if we cant trade him at next years deadline i would rather keep him and re-sign or if he leaves so be it we didnt give anything up for him so he need to trade your best goal scorer isnt there

Burrows would be a player i would be trying my hardest to trade higher salary cap and his play just isnt at the level it used to be at cash in now and try and move him for what ever you can

By getting rid of say trading Hamhuis and Burrows as well as Higgens they can save 11.5 million

As well as further options like the Goalie situation and finding a team to possibly trade Miller to a contending team

Most will depend on the playoff picture this year/next year

Higgins really the only contracted veteran I believe smart to sell.

Higgins would be a 4th line winger, capable of moving up the line up with attrition during play off battles on a contender. Just like he was for us in 2011.

That would be worth a late 2knd? I'd be interested in that, because it would clear a perm spot for Kassian and then another newbie to get start.

Or a package deal with a goalie and a prospect for something (contracted, no rentals). I would be in to that as well...

Burrows has been proving a pretty valuable utility player this year. Just like in years past. Albeit more expensive... I'm ok with that also. Would not pass investigating if a chance came up, but not on any actual for sale list.

I'm not convinced we are actually deep enough to let Bieksa go. A healthy Tanev, Clendening and Weber is not adequate for right side D. Especially once someone else goes down.

Personally I would rather keep Mathias and Dorsett. I would be making efforts to re-sign them. But if not re-signed would also look at moves for them at the deadline?
