[Trade] Nathan Horton to Leafs for David Clarkson

Recommended Posts

It's strange that his contract wasn't insured. Don't think it was team option. Considering Horton's injury history prior to contract signing, it may have been difficult to secure insurance on it, period.

So they went on the MLSE insurance plan.

Now will they compliance buyout Clarkson? Perhaps.

There aren't compliance buyouts anymore.

I thought Horton's career was over because of his back injury

It is - Horton's struggling to do even the regular everyday life activities like sitting up when he wakes up in the morning to get out of bed - highly unlikely CBJ gives up on Horton if they thought he could return

Wow. Win for TO.

Clarkson flat out sucks. Horton is effective but injuries are close to taking his career. If he's allowed back he will be a lot better than Clarkson. No idea why CBJ did this deal, at all.

CBJ is paying Horton to be on the LTIR - they can't afford to be paying for a player that won't be on the ice

From their perspective, at least Clarkson will be on the ice

Meanwhile, from TOR's perspective, they have all the $$$ in the world but no cap space - so they dump a healthy but underperforming player and pick up a guy who will never play hockey again on LTIR - they'll be paying Horton money to not be in their lineup and count against their cap

I do not understand this trade. Hortons career is finished.

That's the point - Horton goes on LTIR, meaning TOR pays $$$ but it doesn't count against the cap hit like Clarkson

Nathan Horton is done, his back is just.. he's probably never playing hockey at the NHL level again

Columbus just doesn't want to pay him $$$ to be on LTIR because they're not that rich of a franchise, whereas Toronto probably doesn't give a sh** since Clarkson was a scratch anyways.

Exactly this - CBJ needs a player on the ice for the $$$ they are paying, whereas TOR needs cap space and has all the money in the world to pay someone on LTIR to attain that cap space

And no salary retained. Nonis for GM of the year imo.

Hardly - MLSE for owner of the year for bailing out the GM and picking up the tab on a guy who will not play another game of hockey just so they have some cap space

what a dumb move by Columbus. This is the dumbest move I have seen. WOW columbus no wonder that team is the bottom of the standings. Just a bonehead move. 5 million for Clarkson wow smh

I'm not surprised one bit that you don't understand this trade

Columbus was Paying 5.3 for Horton to not play now they are paying the same money for someone to play even though it is not a high end player they are getting production atleast...Toronto was going to be paying that contract for the next few years now they get to put Horton on LTIR and use the cap hit else where, IMO give each team a need they were looking for and if by some miracle Horton recovers Toronto made the right move

Toronto made an incredible move. Clarkson won't even be worthy of a roster spot , let alone a contract spot in a few years.

Dumber than paying someone the same amount in salary to not play for you?

Yes because Clarkson at 5 million in a salary era is bad. I don't see Clarkson cracking 15 goals ever, the guy is a horrible skater and is at best 3rd line grinder. Goodluck holding on him for 5 years, I rather pay Horton for not playing and sign a decent player in the off-season, just like how Leafs will do it. Smart move by Nonis and a dumb move by Columbus.

I wonder if the Leafs will flip Horton for Richards now...

I would be surprised - they just got out of the Clarkson jail

MLSE has the money to pay a player on LTIR just so he doesn't count against the cap and bailed Nonis out

Dean Lombardi is kicking himself for not doing this with Richards for Horton

Haha certainly

I understand your point and it makes sense, but only for a team that spends $$$ (Toronto is the wealthiest team, or whatever).

The issue for Columbus is that they aren't a wealthy hockey team so they can't afford to pay Horton AND another player. So the Jackets are better off financially paying just one player (who I agree is a worse player at the same price) to at least be in the lineup and provide anything at all than pay 2 players' salaries with one of them not providing anything to the team.

As far as the "hockey" part of it is concerned, I agree that Toronto got the better end of the deal simply because they freed $5 million in cap space. At the same time, the actual Blue Jackets organization/owner is actually having every $ go towards someone contributing to the team.

The impossible is more possible then the posssible, because when your dealing with the impossible, you will work harder to make it happen, thus making it possible.

ie Gretzky, Luongo, and today Clarkson.

True. Still surprised that they got Horton though. Basically Savard status, LTIR cap hit gone every October.

Think Clarkson will be a decent player again. 30-40 point winger at most but still effective although overpaid. Columbus' system suits his style too.
