theminister
Another interesting way to look at this from CLB's perspective.. They would have to pay a player another contract at league minimum to fill Horton's spot on the ice, maybe more. So rather than pay the $6 mil for Horton plus another $550k for that spot ($6.55 mil) they replace it with $5.25 mil. That's a real dollar savings of $1.3 mil per, minimum. Bobby_Lu1ngo
Soon as carolina started making their moves toronto had to get theirs done as to not move too far ahead of them in the standings. Interesting watching teams compete for a worse spot in the standings.

TOMapleLaughs
Apparently the trade wasn't even Nonis' idea.Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 7m7 minutes ago CBJ initiated trade proposal with TOR. They wanted to lose Horton's financial commitment for player who couldn't play. CBJ wanted Clarkson. CBJ signs a guy to a megadeal they couldn't insure. TO trades for him even though he clearly will not play again. TO claims they won the trade. I think both franchises look bad today and they should feel bad. elvis15
Aaron Portzline @Aportzline 8s8 seconds ago #CBJ did not have insurance on Nathan Horton, so they would have had to pay the full amount of his contract for the rest of his term. All about the bucks. And this right here is the only reason why Nonis got a get out of jail free card on one of the worst signings in recent memory. Both players have 4 more years on their deals, but if Horton wasn't going to retire and wanted to drag this out in hopes of returning, CBJ might as well have the player that could be on the ice. Insurance companies pay injured players... Not if they aren't insured, they don't... can anyone photoshop a tank with maple leafs decals all over it? Jiggs50
That Clarkson contract is a joke but playing with Johansen will help. Just watch him pot 20+ next year.

elvis15
So....insuring a players contract against LT injury/retirement is optional for each NHL team? Really? The Leafs are the kinda team who would then I suppose. Way more "have" then the Jackets Surprised that's not a league wide policy though.... Some player's injury history makes it cost prohibitive to insure them. Crosby for instance had trouble with that after his concussions (although I think that was mainly for the Olympics). To add to that, Horton was injured when CBJ signed him iirc, so that would likely have been a factor in insurance.

KFBR392
Traded for a guy who will likely never play another game for the rest of his career. That's gotta make you feel good about yourself. Poor Clarkson. At least he'll have his millions of dollars to wipe away his tears.

Monty
If Horton plays again Toronto wins. If Horton doesn't play again, Toronto wins. Win-win for T.O. I agree with this, for the most part. Great move by Nonis. However, Columbus aphas a much better system and better players for Clarkson to play with. Perhaps he becomes a 40 point player. Still overplayed, and unlikely it will ever happen. Surprising to say the least.
