[Proposal] Three deadline deals

Recommended Posts

In my books the Canucks are doing a simultaneous 'retool' while also trying to stay marginally competitive. This means that we are building a young core like Virtanen, Horvat, etc while making the playoffs but not really being cup contenders.

Along this model, I think there are some moves we can make.

1.
Alex Burrows, 2016 3rd round pick to Montreal for 2015 1st round pick

Why: Montreal is sitting a top the East right now and will be making a strong playoff push. Burrows is a french Canadian built for the playoffs with grit and all the intangibles. On top of this he can score, which is Montreal's weakest area. On the flip side the Canucks have a surplus of right wingers and can afford to lose one or two. On top of this, Burrows could probably use a change of scenery. In return the Canucks get a hugely valuable first round pick (granted it is very late in the round) along with cap space for next year.

2.
Andrej Sekera fetched a first round pick and a recent second round draftee. The prices for defenseman are ridiculously high and the Canucks need to capitalize on that.
Kevin Bieksa to Tampa Bay for Anthony DeAngelo, 2015 3rd round pick.
Why: Tampa Bay is a solid young team that could make a serious run in the playoffs. Bieksa brings experience and toughness. They are not as deep on defense as they would like and they have cap space. DeAngelo was the 19th overall pick last year and looks like a really good young right handed shot defenseman. He would slot in as our best D prospect at the moment. Essentially combined with the trade above, we end up with two first round picks for Bieksa and Burrows.

3. Montreal 2015 1st round pick, Linden Vey, Niklas Jensen to Arizona for Keith Yandle
Why: Keith Yandle is only 27 years old so he is significantly younger and better than Bieksa. This trade makes us better this year and for the future. He is signed on one more year and we have time to work on an extension. For Phoenix, they get three good prospects, two of which are already quite developed along with all the cap space from not taking back major salary.

Overall these trades leave us with this:
Going out: Bieksa, Burrows, Vey, Jensen, 2016 3rd rounder
Coming in: Yandle, DeAngelo, 2015 3rd rounder
With these deals we get better now and in the future. We trade from a position of strength at right wing, while improving our weakness area of top d-man prospects and we get an elite d-man entering his prime.

Ah, dream on young jedi,

you would have to give up a heck of a lot more to get anyway near the return you are proposing.

WHY would MTL give up a 1st for a guy who might only have 1 more so-so year left. He's injured a lot, nowhere near the scorer he once was, need I go on or is being a franco enough to get a 1st, sigh!

Vey and Jensen couldn't fetch a bag of pucks in return

Let's see how the roster looks Monday afternoon

Burrows goes only to Pittsburgh and we want a top prospect(Pouliot) and a second rounder.

Also, Bieksa brings us a young top six, Schenn for example, or is a part of a package for Kadri.

No he does not. Why would either Philly and Toronto trade two guys in their 20s for a guy that is 30+ and no longer the player that he once was? Not to mention his injury.

Philly is not that far off, they need a number 1 goalie and a guy exactly like Bieksa to get them over the hump. There's no coencidence to why NYI have become so strong, Boychuck and Leddy have been massive for them. Bieksa provides that same push that those guys do.
