Willie D's current system.

Lucky Day

Recommended Posts

Willie D is rolling 4 lines like Alain V or Tort-head did not the last couple of years, his puckpress system is just the antidote for last years malaise.

When the team is fresh, it's a pleasure to watch them, battling hard, earning turnovers and pressing the pace on the forecheck, with Kenins and Horvat showing us exactly what we needed from the youth.

What else have you noticed in our systems that are improved or declined from 2013 (AV) or 2014 (Torts)

P.S. We were Champs in 2011, did not get the Bettman bonus, as if he wants Raincity to win the cup

I can't say we roll lines like we did in '11, but it's definitely an improvement. Willie D also seems to have a way with our younger players, which makes sense, given his extensive experience with players around that age. Guys like Vey, Clendenning, Kenins, and Horvat have all played well in stretches under his system. Even Kassian has recently thrived, despite what originally seemed like a detrimental system for him.

Hard for Torts to roll 4 lines when he DIDN'T HAVE A 4TH LINE.

Yeah but didn't have to run the sedins into the ground. Just look at their minutes at the start of last season and look at them now.

Tort's treated them like guys in their early 20s with the way he gave them their shifts. Also Henrik was only +2 while kesler was -19 last season. Just goes to show how bad last season was.

To be anywhere near a playoff spot with this roster is nothing short of brilliant. They should not even be close. He's on the right track imo.

Imagin this guy with an actual roster of stars. Scarry. If he had taken that job with the pens..............Wow.

We are very fortunate.

He ran Kesler into the ground too.

Torts was a crap coach, but this team just went through a cap crunch and zero prospects were ready to help, so it wasn't all him.

Last years team was not as deep but they were clearly mismanaged.

This years team is deeper but the 2nd line isn't as good. They have performed close to the way they should. I think that Willie has done a good job but he's not having a Coach of the Year season. I like Horvat's development, Willie put him in situations where he would succeed and it has paid off. I also like the way that Willie has been able to manage ice time. Linden Vey has done ok but Zack Kassian has been the challenge. He has had some difficult injuries (broken pinky) and missed a month but it has taken a long time for him to come around and it took some pretty heavy handed tactics to get through to Zack.

So I disagree with the word brilliant but am quite happy with coach Willie

Torts could have and should have given more ice time to Dale Weise, among others. His handling of playing time was ridiculous, which is one reason why he will never coach in the NHL again.

Time will tell, biggest flaw with AV's system was the lack of a system when under pressure. We can blame a lack of depth or player performance but under AV our only play when forechecked hard was to dump it out of our zone over and over effectively turning the puck over and letting the opposition reload while we tried to make a line change.

When you lack confidence to take a risk you take the safe play, which is not always the smart play imho.

I still see it from this line up at times so I'm not entirely sold. Teams like Boston and LA still smell blood in the water.

Easy for me to say of course but we have needed a better transition game, quick thinking, good puck support with quick passes to give the forecheckers pause to be to aggressive. Not sure we have the players to execute this style but there has been improvement.

He even had to try Dale Weise at center before he was traded. His trip to the Calgary lockerroom was stupid and embarrassing, but there just wasn't much depth available to him last year. He also said the Sedins were tough, power guys or something. lul

Agreed, Willie has been a very good coach. Let's hold off on "brilliant" until we win the Cup (or at least win a playoff series or two).

One difference between Willie and Torts is player development. Yes, the Canucks have more depth this year. But part of the reason for the depth is Willie's handling of players. Guys who Willie has done a good job with include:

Horvat

Matthias

Vey

Kassian (yes, Kassian)

Sbisa.

Kennins

Glendenning

Biega.

Yes, Kennins, Glendenning and Biega played well from the start, but Willie put them in situations where they could succeed and obviously did a good job with integrating them into the systems.

And his patience with Sbisa seems to have paid off. I would even say he has helped Weber's game. And he obviously been a lot better with Edler and the Sedins than Torts was. (The Sedins are pretty much self-coached but time management is an issue).

Torts seemed to have no concept of player management. As more than one player has pointed out, Torts on a good day was a lot tougher on players than Willie on his worst day. Swearing at guys does not always generate better play. And, unlike Torts, Willie actually shows up for practice.

Can't say we roll four lines like in 2011? When did the 2011 fourth line ever play fifteen minutes. I'd be surprised if victor oreskovich ever got more than 5 or 6

Yes HE DID. Don't tell me Richardson and Weise aren't 4th line material. In fact, we had H. Sedin, Kesler, Santorelli, Richardson in the middle while still having Matthias and Kassian in the lineup. Even though we have more depth this year, we did have a 4th line last year but Torts just did not use them or trust them for whatever reason and only wanted to give Sedins more ice time.

Yannick Weber is also 4th line material
