Canuck Conundrum

Hey guys I'm new to the site, but I've been a long time fan of the Canucks since I was a little kid. I'm not sure if this topic is already out there either, so my apologies if it is.

The Canucks have wayyy too many players right now and though I think that most of this will be sorted out in the off season I thought it'd be a good discussion to get people's thoughts on who should be traded and who should be kept for next season.

Here's a list of all the players, the caps and where they're at in their contract:

Henrik Sedin, 34, Three more years, $7 million

Daniel Sedin, 34, Three more years, $7 million

Radim Vrbata, 33, One more year, $5 million

Alex Burrows, 33, Two more years, $4.5 million

Chris Higgins, 31, Two more years, $2.5 million

Jannik Hansen, 28, Three more years, $2.5 million

Nick Bonino, 26, Two more years, $1.9 million

Shawn Matthias, 27, Pending UFA, $1.75 million

Zack Kassian, 24, One more year, $1.75 million

Derek Dorsett, 28, Pending UFA, $1.63 million

Bo Horvat, 19, Two more years, $1.51 million

Brad Richardson, 30, Pending UFA, $1.15 million

Linden Vey, 23, Pending RFA, $735,000

Ronalds Kenins, 23, Pending RFA, $363,000

Brandon McMillan, 24, Pending RFA, $198,000

DEFENCEMEN

Alex Edler, 28, Four more years, $5 million

Kevin Bieksa, 33, One more year, $4.6 million

Dan Hamhuis, 32, One more year, $4.5 million

Luca Sbisa, 25, Pending RFA, $2.17, million

Chris Tanev, 25, Pending RFA, $2 million

Yannick Weber, 26, Pending RFA, $850,000

Ryan Stanton, 25, Pending RFA, $550,000

Frank Corrado, 21, Pending RFA, $413,000

Adam Clendening, 22, Pending RFA, $358,000

Alex Biega, 26, Pending UFA, $223,000

GOAL

Ryan Miller, 34, Two more years, $6 million

Eddie Lack, 27, One more year, $1.15 million

Jacob Markstrom, 25, Pending RFA, $310,000

What do you think?

I'm not just trying to provide a list, I'm just having all the information people need to be able to have an informed discussion about our excess of players and whether we should trade them or keep them for the future.

Yes I joined way back and have been lurking ever since. I'm starting to find my way around a bit and with me being bed ridden for the next week I had some spare time and wanted to see fellow Canucks fans opinions on this problem (though it's better to have too many players then not enough).

Based on what I've seen up to this point in the season.

My 13 forwards would be (no particular order):

1 Henrik Sedin, 34, Three more years, $7 million

2 Daniel Sedin, 34, Three more years, $7 million

3 Radim Vrbata, 33, One more year, $5 million

4 Alex Burrows, 33, Two more years, $4.5 million
5 Jannik Hansen, 28, Three more years, $2.5 million
6 Nick Bonino, 26, Two more years, $1.9 million

7 Shawn Matthias, 27, Pending UFA, $1.75 million

8 Zack Kassian, 24, One more year, $1.75 million
9 Derek Dorsett, 28, Pending UFA, $1.63 million
10 Bo Horvat, 19, Two more years, $1.51 million
11 Linden Vey, 23, Pending RFA, $735,000
12 Ronalds Kenins, 23, Pending RFA, $363,000

13 Chris Higgins, 31, Two more years, $2.5 million

Brad Richardson, 30, Pending UFA, $1.15 million -let walk

Brandon McMillan, 24, Pending RFA, $198,000 -don't care

My 8 defencemen would be:

1 Alex Edler, 28, Four more years, $5 million
2 Kevin Bieksa, 33, One more year, $4.6 million
3 Dan Hamhuis, 32, One more year, $4.5 million
4 Luca Sbisa, 25, Pending RFA, $2.17, million
5 Chris Tanev, 25, Pending RFA, $2 million
6 Ryan Stanton, 25, Pending RFA, $550,000
7 Frank Corrado, 21, Pending RFA, $413,000

8 Adam Clendening, 22, Pending RFA, $358,000

Yannick Weber, 26, Pending RFA, $850,000 -deal rights away for whatever you can get
Alex Biega, 26, Pending UFA, $223,000 -if unhappy as AHL depth, let walk

My two goalies right now would still be Miller and Lack. I need to see what Markstrom can do in the NHL before I get rid of Lack.

This is all assuming no UFAs get signed and no trades are made. I think Kenins has earned a spot on the roster next year (not to say he won't get sent down to make room for returning injured players this year). If 8 D is an untenable situation, Stanton would be the one I'd trade away.

edit: I'm also assuming nobody is waiving their NTCs. I think Higgins is expendable and many people here talk as if they'll be massively disappointed if Benning doesn't trade him. Well, it's not up to Benning if Higgins declines to waive his NTC.

Im certain I've never used conundrum my entire life

"Canucks have too many players to sign for next season with not enough cap space, so who should we keep and who should we trade?" just didn't sound as catchy to me.

Except Higgins is 4th on our team in points

What do you think?

I bolded all the guys that are overpaid. If we had fair-value deals like the Flames do and didn't get screwed over by Gillis on the NTCs, we could have an insane top 9 right about now. We still kinda do.

There are a few instances where the numbers in the original post are meaningless for consideration of next season. It doesn't work to just look at the cap hit column in nhlnumbers.

One example is Markstrom. His cap hit column on nhlnumbers is 0.31 as you've listed, but it shows his cap number as $1.2 million and his salary at $1.4 million. The qualifying offer for a player making over $1 million is 100% of the existing salary and if the club instead elects arbitration the award can't be less than 85% of his existing salary.

Another example is Luca Sbisa. His salary this season is $2.9 million. The $2.17 million figure is meaningless for next season-a qualifying offer would have to be not less than $2.9 million and if the club chooses arbitration the arbitrator would choose a number that can't be less than $2.465 million and can be more.

Dorsett's salary is $2 million. Kenins is 0.718 million. McMillan is .625 mill. Corrado's is .575, Clendening's .818, Biega .6.

Those are just the pending free agents. I haven't commented on others.

I'm pretty sure if we traded Bieksa to another team, we could easily get him back on through FA when his contract is up and sign him to a cheaper contract.

I love Burrows, but the dude is way too expensive for what he brings.

Bieksa is a tough one. We saw what happened with Edler from last season. Will he rebound next year? Or should we try to get some picks and free up some cap space while he still has a relatively high value? Same with Higgins and Burrows. I like the dudes a lot, but we need to get younger and stronger and I think we should sell while the price this year is ridiculously high to get as much as we can for them. They only have 5 years or so max left in them, so why not get some good prospects and draft picks for the future (not like we're lacking any though).

I didn't know that, thanks for the info! I just copied the list from the province.
