[Discussion] 2015 Trade Deadline Winners and Losers

Recommended Posts

What do you all think? Who were the big winners and who were the big losers?

Winners: Personally, I think that Chicago, Anaheim, Coyotes and Sabres were the big winners this year. Chicago because they take another run at a Cup without giving up a roster player, the Yotes for stockpiling assets, Anaheim for shoring up their D, and the Sabres for continuing the tank job in earnest and acquiring more picks.

Losers: The Leafs. Did nothing major at all.

Leafs cleared up 5 million in capspace :)

CAL- Baertschi deal they got fleeced on by us thankfully. Why on earth would they ever trade a player his value to a rival...! lol.

Baertschi asked for a trade. Since the deal was so last minute, Benning was the highest bidder and the Flames brass took it. Not much to consider. Canucks got a really good deal.

Baertschi - Horvat - Virtanen

Has the potential to be a great line.

Yeah… I forgot about the Jets.

When you look at their deals in their entirety they got a lot better and did what they had to to give it a run.

Jets gave up very little and got a lot better.

Myers has 6 points in 8 games for the Jets. Bogosian had 13 points in 41 games for the Jets before being traded.

Drew Stafford has 4 points in 8 games for the Jets.

Jiri Tlusty, while only playing 2 games, already has one point.

They also added Jay Harrison a few months ago for defensive depth, and just added Stempniak as a replacement, depth forward.

Did a lot without giving up a lot.

I gotta say, Chevy doesn't work the phones alot. But when he does, he makes it count.

Spent a long weekend in the Gulf islands with little to no cell service. Think I'll make it an annual tradition, it was nice avoiding the TD frenzy.

Anyhow I'm just getting caught up with all the deals made (seems like a lot this year!) but the one that jumps out at me initially is NYR grabbing Yandle. Steep price but kudos to them for recognizing how wide open the East is and really going for it. Especially with the experience they gained going to the Finals last year. Who knows what happens but this has the feel of a key move to put a team over the top.

Anaheim is the other big winner imo. Regardless of their record, this is the first time I'm looking at them with legit respect and fear.

On the other end of the spectrum... I guess Buffalo and Arizona accomplished their goals?? I'm the type that can't bring myself to get behind true tanking, but, good for them I suppose.

I like JB's moves here at home as well. Low key but that's exactly what I wanted. Seems his plan is deeply entwined with what happens on the farm. I love that guys like Jensen, Gaunce, Shink, Pedan etc. are being given a proper chance to learn on a contender AHL team, and Baertchi (guess I will need to learn how to spell his name..) fingers crossed could be the 2nd line LW we need for next season. Hopefully Vrbata can mentor him a bit.

Leafs & Sharks = biggest fails.

The easier answer is who the loser was.

The team that got their rebuild bass ackwards.

Once again, they've dealt their best two way players - Santorelli and Winnik - and they lost Franson and Holzer from their back end.

They kept the management group that got them where they are.

They still have the players they should have started their rebuild by moving - Phaneuf and Kessel. They're so bloody indecisive that they continue to doddle along and don't know how to take a loss when it's necessary. It took Jarmo K's charitable contribution to get anything productive done, and he's the one that ripped the bandaid off for them

The Leafs got some picks - a 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th pick to show for it. That's less than the haul of one draft, where you can reasonably expect an NHL asset or two, three in very good year, in the end.

They also got Leipsic.....Lindstrom.... and a few spare parts.

That is simply not enough. Nowhere near even close to enough. If they bat .1000 with those picks they'd pretty much break even, and batting a thousand is not going to happen - and that would be considerably down the road.

What do they have to plug into all those holes in the near future? Uh, Lindstrom. A 31 year old who scored 6 points in 34 games with some pretty damn talented team-mates in St Louis. He's a UFA. Brewer, UFA. Horton, nope. Sill, UFA. Huh? For real? Brennan... Perhaps they can convert the 25 year old RFA Brennan from an AHLer onto their roster. So they'll have Brennan and Leipsic in the AHL next year.

Is their prospect pool good enough to compensate for all that? Silly question. Of course not.

Did they create enough cap space for Nonis to spend filling those holes?

The definition of hockey insanity. Doing the same thing, over and over...

It's beyond the point of taking joy from the failures at the center of the universe. That is just downright sad.

I don't ever want to be looked at someone who defends the leafs but what were you really expecting. The big changes will and should come in the offseason. They didn't let Nonis do anything that would damage the club. They got a bunch of picks for players they signed as UFAs and moved an impossible contract that will give them flexibility in the future. The only real issue I have is they should have started this last summer and tanked for McDavid as they are really just starting the tank now and next season we should really see it.

This summer is where they can move the big contracts. The salary cap for next year is up in the air with the Canadian dollar so poor, nobody was going to take those big contracts at the deadline unless the Leafs retained salary and we all know their big plan is to tank for a year, get one good prospect to hang all their hopes on, and then spend their way out of it. This will fail miserably and I will love every minute of it.

Doubt they wanted Nonis making these moves as I doubt they think he will be the GM moving forward. They will likely get a new GM after season and let him trade the bigger assets. The challenge for them will be having cap flexibility this summer and not misusing it on something shiny.

Arizona and Philly did a very good job selling. Anaheim did a very good job buying, they now have a legit cup contending team.

Edmonton is dead last in the west and did nothing major, guess they're waiting for the draft. Also, Boston didn't fix their problems. Talbot is good, but I don't think Connolly will give them the bump to secure that 2nd wild card spot.
