[Report] Wings-Leafs to revisit trade during offseason

Dion Phaneuf may be presented with an opportunity to move to Detroit after all.

The Toronto Maple Leafs captain, who was reportedly drawing interest from the Detroit Red Wings prior to the NHL trade deadline on March 2, appears likely to be the subject of trade discussions between the two clubs at season's end.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports:

Any attempts to trade Phaneuf are complicated by his burdensome contract, one that carries a $7-million cap hit through to the end of 2018-19. As such, Toronto would likely be called upon to retain salary and/or take on another unfortunate deal, like that of Detroit's Stephen Weiss.

The ever-falling Leafs appear headed for a rebuild, and the jettisoning of Phaneuf is believed to be a starting point in that process.

Whether Detroit, or any other club for that matter, is willing to oblige remains to be seen.

Based off rumours, price was Jurco+Sproul+Weiss for Phaneuf. Trade never happened cause Leafs wanted Mantha on top. Wings hung up and got Zidlicky to fill the void temporarily as deadline was ticking down.

As a Wings fan, that offer was more than fair considering there were reports Kings would do Richards + prospect for Phaneuf. This offer is a lot better and knowing Babcock he would mould Dion into a stud (plus get Weiss gone...man he sucks to a whole nother extent). Jurco has 2nd line potential and is very skilled. Sproul top 4 potential as a 2way dman. Weiss a lesser cap dump financially for both teams.

Lol!, just like when Gillis wanted a First in addition to mantha, Nyquist & Smith for Edler.

We have no clue if that was the actual offer or not. It was reported, never confirmed. Also, Edler is a reliable, smooth skating defenceman unlike Phanuef and his ridiculous contract.

If Detroit would throw in an additional 2nd pick for the Jurco/ Sproul/ Weiss package, I think they should've taken it. Three young assets for the rebuild would be a solid return, and just like when they got Jokinen they could probably flip Stephen to another team, say the Coyotes, if they need more offense or cap hit (for a tanking team). Or, if they move Kadri and go full rebuild they might as well keep him, since he is putting up 0.46 p.p.g. in a limited role. In a depth role he could be a decent (albeit pricey) scorer, and if they had Clarkson on the team, what's another Stephen Weiss if it gets them youth?

Take anything Bruce Garrioch says/rumours with a grain of salt. He's not a credible source - he's a pretender with a job - in a class with Botchford.

The story is regurgitated - the pieces sound absurd tbh.

I'd rate this about a G2 on the Eklund scale.

Lol!, just like when Gillis wanted a First in addition to mantha, Nyquist & Smith for Edler.

The year we were going to trade Edler was 2013 (before his new contract and the NTC kicked in). That was also the year that Mantha was drafted. I'm pretty sure Gillis couldn't have wanted Mantha from Detroit before they drafted him...and no one knew Mantha would turn out to be one of the top offensive prospects until the 2013-2014 season when he lit up the QMJHL.

The Gillis hate on this forum is unreal. Under his watch the Canucks had the most successful seasons in franchise history. Yes, he made dumb decisions but almost every GM does.

Teams interested in Phaneuf: , , , ,

Also Detroit would be going after a right handed dmen.

Phaneuf plays the right side though so he fits the bill

if the leafs retain a lot of salary then I could see them getting a lot. If they aim for 2018 to be the end of the rebuild then it would be a good idea to retain a lot, get back more picks and prospects, and by the time your team is competitive again his cap hit will be gone. Maybe they should just swallow the entire 7m or so :D
