"It’s the untold tale of prescription drug abuse in professional sport. An investigation by the fifth estate discovers a shocking story of the rampant over-prescription of drugs by some team doctors in major sports leagues."

Definitely recording it. Thanks for the heads up.

edit: streaming for me on CBC right now! Perfect timing.

There my favorite investigating show for sure.

You know they do a lot of research before any story.

SPOILER : Don't read on if you want to go in fresh!

Just finished the stream. Reminded me of how shocked I was when I first read a partial list of the drugs Boogaard was taking/prescribed, and by all of the different doctors who were providing them to him. I either forgot or didn't realize that his dad, Len Boogaard, was a retired RCMP officer and that it was he who started peeking down the rabbit hole.

Lot's of focus on the Boogaard story simply due to the immense number of drugs being prescribed concurrently to him by multiple doctors. Interviews with doctors and professors of medicine weigh in. Former NFL lineman for the 49ers Jeremy Newberry tells what pre game was like for his 11 years there.

Even Bob Mckeown tells of his experiences with prescription drugs back in his CFL Roughrider days.

Back to Boogaard. With his 2 admissions into drug rehab, and subsequent early discharges for different reasons that were followed by immediate relapses into usage, the NHL had only one official response that went something to the effect of, and I'm paraphrasing, "the NHL is currently unaware of any drug abuse problems".

After the depths that CBC went to in order to dig up the story there was one group that I was both surprised, and disappointed, not to hear from...

Where the hell is the NHLPA in all of this?

TL;dr. Let's blame it on Marilyn. /sarcasm.

Also, as over half of this episode focuses on drugs in the NHL maybe the mods would like to move your thread into the Around the NHL section with a new thread title. More people might be interested in this if they new it was related to drugs in sports and not just news.

I almost missed it.

Good stuff. Thanks for the summary.

I refuse to watch state propaganda for news but I'm game for this documentary

Before determining rather a piece of information is propaganda or not one must figure out if the producer of this piece of information stands to gain anything from exposing this information.

CBC stands to gain nothing from exposing this piece of information. Therefore it's a good indicator that this is not propaganda.

Russia =/= Canada

Russia Today =/= CBC

You're welcome. The lineups in the dressing room to get prescription pain killer shots on the way out to the football field was... interesting, I suppose could be one word. Overly surprising maybe as well? One by one, all in about 2 minutes 30 people would go in, get a shot, wipe the blood, out you go.

Like inoculations.
