Drive from Europe to US?

Well since the Russian Ruble nose dived just recently and their oil based economy is in the crapper right now it doesnt seem like the time to build trillion dollar anything. Especially a thing like a 10,000 Km roadway with dubious economic benefits.

This is what highways in Russia look like: The Russian Federal Highway between Moscow and Yakutsk. Imagine thousands and thousands of kilometers of this.

I just do not see the logic in this...where are people coming from that they would want to make the trek through Siberia vs. flying in a plane. You can fly to Europe and back for about $1000. The gas alone of driving is going to be far more than that.

Siberia is freekin huge, and you don't get any major population centres until Western Russia or Northern China.

The transatlantic Tunnel makes a lot more sense:

1) Find a way to build a tunnel across the Atlantic; then

2) Put a high speed train in there.

Even then, you're still looking at a 10+ hour bullet train ride.

Way more practical than a highway through Siberia.

See that's the problem,

Everyone views this as a single country doing it.

Wrong.

You have 11 or mroe European countries and THEN Russia that would share the cost, then as well the US and Canada as well.

This would be a truly global event.

Added China with its trillions in cold cash and gold reserves wants this done as well as it could simply drive a road north adn assist in the manpower issues through Russia

And poof.

This thing gets started in our lifetime.

Economically it makes too much sense not to do it. high speed rail AND a road basically gives Europe China and North America unfettered control over global trade.

This benefits Russia the most though. Most of the road is going through it and I'm not sure the 11 other countries plus Canada and the u.s would fund it for that reason.

But I completely agree it makes a ton of sense economically for all those involved.

Just imagine a transportation network that spanned the globe. The question is sailing across the Pacific or Atlantic in super tankers faster than driving? If it is, this makes no sense.

What's with governments and their obsession with building roads when water transport is much more economical than overland for bulk goods and air is faster when speed is a priority?

People have always been about roads. They're cool, they take you places.

Resources man.

That's the one thing people are completely forgetting.

Our own government has been desperately looking for ways to viably network the north since 2011. Once those roads are in they can start shuttling heavy equipment and vital infrastructure to the north.

Why?

resources. Oil lumber gas and lng potential reserves of helium (yes that IS a huge thing) and other essential non oil based gasses gold silver diamonds and...

Rare Earth Metals

Northern Russia and Northern Canada have the largest untapped stores of these resources and at some point in time it will be essential to build the networks to get to them.

This means that road networks and in the case of Europe and Russia, rail networks; WILL be built. Alongside of those will be twinned pipelines as well by and large. It makes sense economically.

Every great undertaking on this planet has been taken on by curiousity greed or war. Remember that

Well, realistically, we need governments to build the roads....not because the government's are the only ones capable to do so, but so the roads are controlled.

If we have privatized roads, then whoever built the road can extort whatever fee he wants from the people travelling on it. It would be insane.

Let the governments build the roads.

A privatized road could be tolled and have billboards that would pay off the construction of it, along with government subsidy. Actually in this case, it makes perfect sense to have a privatized road since this road would probably be used only by tourists and for trades. Why let the government tax people for this road since it wouldn't make sense and I would see corruption if governments were involved.

But if only occasional tourists are using the roads, who the hell is gonna pay for advertising. Nobody is going pay for a billboard that is hardly going to be seen.

And while agree, governments are corrupt, lets not pretend like regular arent greedy as well. Civilians can be even greedier when not regulated.

Just a heads up, this was brought up in january but is apparently being signed off on today.

Total cost of this high speed train from beijing to Moscow is estimated at a measly $5.2 BILLION.

Again, when money is involved or the ability to make money.

Anything can be built.
