thejazz97
Why don't we just combine all the major leagues to form one insane international league that would compete for the Stanley Cup? The NHL would be it's own division. The KHL, SHL, Liiga, National League, German League, and Czech League would donate 30 teams to the European division of the new Superleague. With almost if not over 60 teams, the playoff race could get pretty insane, as well as the draft. Can you imagine Connor McDavid going to Jokerit or ZSC Lions? Playoffs would be 1v32, 2v31, 3v30, etc. Proposed List of European Teams Dynamo Moscow, ZSC Lions, Jokerit, CSKA Moscow, Lokomotiv, SKA St. Petersburg, Farjestad BK, Modo, Djurgardens, Skelleftea, Brynas IF, Frolunda, Lahti Pelicans, TPS Turku, KalPa, Tappara, HC Davos, Lausanne HC, SC Bern, Liberec, Mlada Boleslav, Timra, Linkoping, Karlovy Vary, and 6 expansion teams in London, Paris, Edinburgh, Riga, Berlin, and Kiev. NHL teams would rarely play in Europe, and vice versa. Road trips would be in excess of 10 days. An entry draft for some if not most of those teams (including the 6 expansion teams) to get them up to equal skill would be required. It's wacky; think it could fly in the next decade or two? ComptonCanuck
when travel is more efficient, maybe some jet system or teleportation system sure. but as long as there are commercial/private airliners taking hours upon hours and skipping timezones which is taxing on players this will not happen but good idea anyway

drummer4now
Different rules and rink sizes would not allow that.. Then you have to factor in time and cost and at the end of the day it would be a complete utter joke...
-AJ-
International rules vs NHL rules is one issue. Travel is a whole 'nother beast on top of that.

Baer.
What about a Champion's tourney. NHL champs vs KHL champs vs SHL champs vs Liiga champs. Or North America vs World again.

I was actually thinking of something like that. Instead of having a super league or a world cup of hockey, have just individual teams and play them all against each other. International rules, of course.
avelanch
i'd be all for a champions cup where the winning teams from each league face off against eachother in a single elimination tourney to determine exactly who is best, but not a single superleague, that's just nuts. Dr.Strangelove
I'd personally love to see a super league. However it would never happen it'd be way too expensive , differing rules , insane travel , differing rink sizes. I could go on but yeah it wont happen. What could happen as others have stated above is a single elimination tournament featuring the NHL ,KHL ,LIGA and SHL champions. Now that would be freaking cool. goalie13
Although I don't think it will ever happen, I love the idea of a tournament for all the champions. I think the biggest problem would be exhaustion. Look at how spent the Stanley Cup champs are after it's all over. Could you see them continuing on for another round? I know juniors do it with the Memorial Cup, but I just don't see it with the NHL. The option to make it work would be to reduce the NHL playoffs to 8 teams, but that's never going to happen either. I know the NHL would want it (extra revenue, another spectacle, etc) but the NHLPA would be the major hurdle.
Rick Grimes
I think it's hilarious that anybody thinks these European leagues are even close to being in the same class as a well built NHL team. I'd put any current NHL team, Oilers, Coyotes & Sabres included against the the best team the KHL could put together from ALL the rosters/players they have. That "Might" be closer to an NHL team that could give the Oilers/Sabres/Yotes some issues, but, even then, I wouldn't get my hopes up for the Ruskies. Forget the KHL, I think the Oilers/Yotes/Sabres could take on the best "All-Star" team The KHL, SHL, Liiga, National League, German League, and Czech League could put together. NHL didn't fair too well in those (which is why they no longer do them)

Look at Jagrs numbers in the KHL and come back to me. (he put 100+ points before he left). Not sure about the other leagues but the Nhl and KHL could at the very least do a best of seven or five of their champions. I don't see it happening though cause the leagues have terrible relationships with one another. It got a bit better with the agreement but they still got a ways to go before something like this ends up happening. I would love if it did though or even if it was considered.
