thejazz97
Markstrom's not taking a pay cut. Also, Matthias is 2.5, not 3.5.
Standing_Tall#37
Good thing we got the sedins locked up for 14 million for 3 more seasons though. You could put a scrub with them and they'd do well.

Also, only carrying the league-max 23 players instead of your proposed 26 on their nhl roster may save them some cap room. I also ran the numbers and with bettman's expected cap of 73 million, we almost have 15 million in cap space.
canucklehead44
We will probably sign only one of Richardson, Dorsett, Matthias. Matthias would probably be the first choice, but if he is too expensive it will be Dorsett.
Quantum
Honestly? I expect to see Stanton, Weber, Matthias, and Richardson walk at the end of the season. With the plethora of young, new talent coming through the Canucks farm team, I'm not sure if it makes sense to keep them. Since, Stanton and Weber can easily be replaced by the likes of Clendening, Corrado, and even Hutton (who I honestly believe will challenge for a roster spot next training camp). On top of that, with Baertschi not being waiver eligible and Shinkaurk, Gaunce, Jensen, Virtanen, and possibly McCann banging on the roster door, I'm not sure where Matthias and Richardson fit into the mix. So that means the Canucks should have a little more breathing room, in that regards, in my opinion.
Patchoball Cannons
Markstrom's not taking a pay cut. Also, Matthias is 2.5, not 3.5. If matthias gets to 20 and has a good playoffs, I'm thinking 3.5-4 will be the number. As much as I've liked him this year I just can't see Benning resigning him at 3.5-4. Toronto will probably give him 25 over 5 for 20 goals.
BanTSN
Hopefully Matthias has a good playoff and we can deal him for a pick at the draft. Otherwise we probably should have sold him at the deadline.
Crabcakes
It comes down to priorities. While all of these players need to be signed, not all will be on the active payroll. So, assuming there are no major moves, what are we looking at? list is in order of priority (my bias, D first) Clendening will be on the team or lost on waivers (cap 817,500 RFA) project at $900? Baertcshi will also be on the team or lost on waivers (cap 832,500 RFA) --> 1.0? Sbisa is turning into a good player but the cap hit will be near the top of the list of the players to be resigned. (cap 2.175, salary 2.9 --> new cap hit at least 3.0) Weber is cap friendly and his work on the pp lately definitely puts him in the keeper category (cap 850,000 RFA) --> 1.25? The 3 UFA's: I like all 3 but it really comes down to what they can be signed for Matthias (cap 1.75, salary 1.85) compare with Hansen and Higgins at 2.5 (that's an optimistic number) but could be 3.0 Dorsett (cap 1.6, salary 2.0) based on present salary, will probably get a small raise on 2.0 Richardson (cap 1.15, salary 1.15) really don't have a feel for what he'll get 1.5? Vey (cap 735,000) is a Benning project and will get at least one more year. --> 850? Stanton (cap 550,000) he is serviceable and his cap friendly salary puts him on the team --> 600? The total on this list comes out to $13.6 and I admit, the numbers are optimistic. The hard decisions are going to come from the players on the list with the highest projected salaries. Spisa, Matthias, Dorsett. Does Benning resign those on the list above or move a larger salary like the OP suggests? Players not listed above, barring trades, won't be on the active roster imo. riffraff
If Matthias doesn't show up for the playoffs we need to look elsewhere. He has had one good game (vs St louis) since the dead line. Not impressed with this guy lately. Big guy who is playing small atm.
tyhee
Hopefully Matthias has a good playoff and we can deal him for a pick at the draft. Otherwise we probably should have sold him at the deadline. As the trade deadline has passed and he's an UFA, trading him means either: -signing him, then trading him after the end of the season, or -after the season but before the start of the discussion period in late June, trading his rights-essentially the rights to be the only team allowed to deal with him for a very short time.Such trades are extremely rare because of the obvious likelihood that the acquiring team gets nothing out of it. More likely if the Canucks don't keep him (or Dorsett, or Richardson, the other UFAs, or any RFA they don't qualify or offer arbitration to) is that the player simply signs elsewhere. smithers joe
i hope they don't rush the young guys...shinkaruk and jensen haven't impressed yet...virtanen mccann and casuals may need a tear or two more seasoning..
spur1
Not sure Ritchie and Stanton get re-signed. Dorsett and Mathias I think are no brainers.

I also ran the numbers and with bettman's expected cap of 73 million, we almost have 15 million in cap space. Agree that the bloated Sedin contracts will hurt the team next year. The Sedins are good but obviously 7 million is too much and will look terrible by the end of the those contracts. I think the current estimate for the cap is likely between 71 and 72 million rather than 73 million given the low value of the Canadian dollar. I don't think the Canucks can afford Matthias. It would not make sense to pay him more than $2.5 million in any case. Yes, he has 18 goals, but only 9 assists. And given his age and scoring history, there is no reason to expect more productivity next year. He has size but does not really play a physical game and is not strong defensively. A salary of 3.5 million would be a gross overpayment for his expected productivity and even 2.5 million would not be cheap. Baertschi probably has higher expected productivity and would be a lot cheaper.

Crabcakes
Kassian is signed next year. His hit is 1.75. He is an RFA the following year 2016-17. If you're asking, will he be moved? Only if JB gets a sweetheart of an offer.
Noseforthenet
Weber and Sbisa or Stanton will all be off loaded for picks. We need to sell high on Weber. Not comfortable with him on the defensive side of the puck at all. Some team will see him as a boon for the powerplay though. Vey, Kassian, or Hansen will also likely be traded off too. We'll see. theminister
I suspect the NHLPA will use the 5% multiplier this year raising the cap to $72.87 mil or thereabouts. I don't see Matthias coming back next year for the role and money we have to offer him unless another top 9 winger is moved out.
