Faceoffs

So after watching the Canucks vs. Jets today and the absolute blowout by the Jets in the faceoff circle, I took a stroll through the box scores of the last month or so. The Canucks won the most faceoffs in a game twice... That's right. Two times.

And in many of those games the Canucks were almost doubled up by the opposing team in faceoff wins.

How has this happened? Wasn't Bo Horvat supposed to be a whiz in the faceoff circle? Wasn't Henrik able to win at least half the time in previous seasons? Do the Canucks not have a faceoff specialist working with the team on this glaring problem? It's simply unacceptable to me that the heavy majority of the time the Canucks do not start with the puck on their sticks. How can they go far in the playoffs when they are rarely able to control the puck after a faceoff?

I think it's fair to say that the Canucks would be well into the 100 points territory right now if they had a better faceoff record.

Is anyone else losing their mind over this or am I just taking crazy pills!?! Can anyone shed some light on what the Canucks might do to fix this?

Yea, we just suck at the dot. I'd roughly eyeball and say we're bottom 5 in the league in this department.

Manny leaving was a big blow and when Kesler left our faceoff % just plummeted. Hank is below average, so is Bonino, Vey is bad, Richardson is good, and Bo is good. Richardson is out majority the time so take him out and all we have is Bo. He's also a rookie and isn't deployed a lot like a veteran player so he's not utilized to his max.

...unfortunately we just suck at draws and there's no magic pill to fix it. Players have to put in the work, learn techniques, do repetition after repetition and lots of time invested to get better. Either that or you acquire a FO specialist which we don't have or you hope a prospect will have that when they make the big club like Bo has.

Also directly linked to why we give up the first goal majority of the games and play catch up. Lose the draws and it's difficult when you have to retrieve the puck and start from scratch. Luckily we've had some crazy luck and been able to win a chunk of the games we've given up the 1st goal but it's not a manageable or reliable pace. Come playoffs, it'll come to bite us.

We are overall terrible at FOs. Im not sure why but Henriks FO% has plummeted. Kesler, Manny and Lappy were all players that were over 50% on FOs and weve lost them all and replaced them with people that arent (besides Bo).

Richardson isnt good. If I remember correctly hes around 48%. Bo is the only good one at something like 52%.

Exactly. It's a pretty bleak outlook actually. I remember when Manny was injured with his eye he was still helping to coach the Canucks with their faceoffs. We need a specialist to work with them and Henrik needs to practice like crazy before the playoffs or we may be done for in a hurry.

Once again the Canucks who at times play well have failed in the face-off department. The D has also been brutal and they can't last long if they make the play-offs. At times we think the coaches are good then we see these slow starts where they get behind by a couple of goals and they catch up for a while only to eventually lose. Of course the Canucks have almost always been an enigma and controversy always happens. They need to change the logo to Johnny Canuck.

Every freaking game this season, I say, FACE OFFS, FACE OFFS, FACE OFFS, win a lot and the game will be a lot easier even for our defense. Imagine starting a game with the freaking puck NOT in our own zone. Henrik is quite honestly HORRIBLE this season in FOs. If I could ask 1 thing from WD in his face, is why is he giving important defensive FO's to one of the worst in our team.

SIGH. I can't believe we actually might make the Playoffs having a horrid Face Off year. But unfortunately, even if we make the playoffs, if we can't at least be 50% during a series, it might be our undoing. I hope we get a FO coach for next season. It's such a big part of offense and defense.

I remember a few years ago around when we had a cup run, AV brought in a specialty faceoff coach to work with the centers regularly. This was when Malhotra was here. Just curious if we have this? If not, could be a good investment? Probably a little too late now.

FO % is one of the reasons I do not consider the Canucks serious CUP contenders. Often their FO % early in games is worse than the game average. The team is built around the Sedin puck possession game and that is more than tough when regaining the puck takes as much time as it does.

IMHO so much of the Canuck game works in regular season play but falls apart when the opposing teams are CUP quality.

It's been a problem all season and one of the reasons the PP has struggled. (The PK being where it is shows just how good the team really is, when shorthanded)

It was basically the only reason that I was advocating getting in on the Antoine Vermette sweepstakes at the trade deadline...

We are like 48% as a team or something silly like that.

Bo is the only one over 50%

We need Ritchie back for sure if we want to win a playoff series in my opinion.

Kassian also helps with Winger wins on the draw cause of his size and strength.

Ok, it's a face off thread. Somebody has to look up the numbers.

Horvat 51.6%

Bonino 48%

Richardson 47.8%

H Sedin 45.1%

Matthias 44.9%

Vey 43.2%

2 of these guys are rookies and will get better.

Horvat has a chance to develop into a face off stud.

Bones and Ritchie are not great but adequate.

I guess we have to forgive Hank.

The other guy plays mostly on the wing anyways.
