Baby's Ear Was Super Glued by Woman Who was Jealous Because She Only Had Daughters

From the CBC:

Police say it's a bizarre case of jealousy and of the cultural pressures of conceiving male offspring.

The story unfolded in February 2013, when the parents of a seven-week-old boy took their wailing baby to the emergency department at the Richmond, B.C., hospital.

The doctor examining the baby found something blocking both his ears and it was later identified as super glue that needed to be removed through painstaking surgery.

Mounties who are only just releasing the details of the case now say the baby's aunt, Wei Wang, was charged and convicted in a B.C. court of aggravated assault last December.

Wang, a 30-year-old Chinese National, was sentenced to four months in jail and two months' probation.

According to a search warrant from August 2013, the baby lived in a home with his parents and their extended family.

Several family members claimed sister-in-law Wei Wang was jealous of Baby Y because she had two daughters.

They said in Chinese culture males were valued higher than females, and that Wang allegedly said she wouldn't receive any inheritance if she didn't produce a son.

The victim's father also claimed he'd found a needle stuck in his son's car seat a few weeks earlier.

RCMP Cpl. Chris Tarasoff says the case was extremely sad and emotionally trying for investigators, but the best result that they could have hoped for was that the child is expected to make a full recovery.

4 months...seriously that's it?

You get more time in jail for screwing with your taxes or lying on a census form.

4 months would give me plenty of time to concoct a get away plan and a place to dump a body for when she gets out of prison

Just saying, your argument might fall on deaf ears.

That is extremely messed up. I understand there is cultural pressure to have a son (though tbh girls rule, boys drool ;)) but isn't it time we moved past this "inheritance only goes to the boys" BS? It's the 21st century, where women and men should be equally capable of managing money or whatever the heck the reasoning behind that rule is.

Also, killing your nephew isn't going magically give you a son. 4-months isn't nearly enough...

Inheritance goes to where the person giving it desires. Not anyone's call except the person giving the inheritance, no matter what your or their values are. Obviously Ms. Wang(?)'s father/mother had set the criteria as having a son.

By the way, Ms. Wang was jealous and put superglue in her nephew's ears, not trying to kill him. Jealousy makes people do crazy things, and I agree, 4 months isn't nearly enough.

Some of it has roots within the third world and lower class people...

Some people need a son to work the farm, hard labour etc.. whereas a girl is too costly for them because they have the pay dowries etc..

Backward thinking for sure, but won't be going away anytime soon.. at least not in the third world and developing nations.

Hang on for second... is this all hearsay on her reasoning for supergluing the baby? Or is this fact?

Or they could just revoke her right to stay in Canada, assuming she's not a fully qualified citizen now.

According to the article it sounds like they said. Nothing about what she claims.

yeah, "they" in my statement is the other family members. nothing directly from the woman herself, just what the other family members claim she said. not exactly admissible in court. then again, for all we know she may have said it to the cops too... the article just doesn't address it.

for all we know, the parents did it to get this woman out of the picture in regards to the same inheritance.

I admit I made a bit of a leap there. But with the superglue in the ears and putting a needle in the carseat...if she wasn't trying to kill him, she was at least trying to maim him.

And I know that the criteria set was having a son, and I'm just saying that I think that is an outdated way of thinking and personally think it should be phased out. Obviously I'm going on an assumption that this was a culturally

Did you read the article, she was found guilty in court. Maybe she admitted to it?
