Worst NHL Contracts

Recommended Posts

Wow what happened to Jeff Skinner? He was supposed to be going places but just dissapeared from the face of the earth. Well not really but he isn't really making splashes around the league.

That's what happens when you sign a huge contract with Carolina.

Cody Hodgson

6 goals, 7 assists, -28 in 78 games. $4.25 million until 2019. Hard to beat.

That's not fair to point out his +/- as he plays for the league worst Sabres. Put him on any other team and watch his +/- drop to anywhere around -23/-24. Easily.

Stastny doesn't belong there.

First of all, one of the best puck possession players on a very good Blues team.

57.9% in the faceoff circle.- easily one of the best faceoff guys in the NHL - top 3 in the NHL among top 6 centers, top 5 period.

28 takeaways, 9 giveaways = =19, Outstanding two way player.

Nothing wrong with 46 points in a season in which he started out behind the 8 ball, with a shoulder injury.

Does not belong in the same category as one dimensional floaters like Phil Kessel.

Agreed. I don't think Vanek really belongs on the list either. He makes too much, but 20 goals and 50 pts on the defensively minded Wild is pretty good, IMHO...

Basically as title says, worst contracts in the NHL today.

Not in any particular order.

Phil Kessel -Tor $8.0 million cap hit through 2019-2020 season 82Gp, 25G, 36A, 61P, -34

:)Really????

Throw away this year and his stats support his $$$...he's a consistent top ten scorer and a top 5 goal scorer

He's also a proven playoff performer:

He had 4 goals and 2 assists in 2012's Seven game series against Chara and the Big Bad Bruins.

The Sedins managed just 2 goals and 2 assists combined in 2011 against Chara.... but you say Kessel is overpaid

I think the biggest argument against Phildo's contract is that it's a lot of money and cap to have committed to a guy who really isn't the sort of player to build a team around. You can't argue the natural gifts, but there's so many other flaws to point at. Lack of commitment to a 200-foot game, lack of commitment to training, over commitment to his diet (and not in a good way), etc. He doesn't really make his linemates better the way you would expect a feature player to either. I liked what he had to say in Dion's defense a month or two back, but that's about as far as it goes.

He's a tremendous talent but not the kind of player to build your team around.

The days of using pre-season, spring training, or whatever that league calls it's exhibition schedule, are over. Players in any sport should be expected to show up ready to go. The exhibition schedule is about working off a bit of the rust, getting to game speed, and working on team systems- not shedding the beer-and-twinkie induced pot belly Phil gained on his summer bonito fishing trips.

64 giveaways -30 only (puck moving) defensemen and playmakers in that lofty range. Kessel, however, is neither.

-34

13 blocks, 18 'hits'.

18 even strength goals

19 even strenght assists.

Bonino had 13 and 20 playing the hardest minutes of any Vancouver forward, and playing through injuries. For 1.9 million. With 54 takeaways, +30 , 90 blocked shots and people criticize the hell out of him and wonder if he's a 2nd line center.
