underrated
Offseason trades To Vancouver: Ryan Murray To Columbus: Kevin Bieksa, Zack Kassian Why: This is trying to buy low on a young stud defenseman. He is the former 2nd overall pick. He has had injury problems, and only played 12 games this year. However he is only 21 and will likely still develop into an elite defenseman. He is already a plus rating guy. We also free up 2.75 million in cap space and frees up a right wing spot, which we have an abundance of. Bieksa could use a change of scenery and is starting to decline in skill. Columbus gets a veteran defenseman who bring toughness and helps them make a playoff run next year. They also get a young power forward who can be a solid piece of their future. To San Jose: Higgins, 2015 first round pick To Vancouver: Patrick Marleau Why: Realistically the Canucks are locked into this core around the Sedins for the next 2-3 years, with their no trade clause's. Therefore adding a guy like Marleau who is around the same age, who has veteran leadership and scoring ability will help our push with this core before we end up re-building (or guys like Virtanen and Horvat really take over). Higgins frees up 2.5 million in cap space and the second line left wing spot for Marleau. For San Jose they get lots of cap space, a solid replacement player and a very valuable first round pick. For cap space we saved 2.75 million in the first deal. Higgins salary is 2.5 million and Marleau's is 6.67. So we have just under 1.5 million more cap hit overall, which is fine with the cap going up. Sedin - Sedin - Burrows Marleau - Bonino - Vrbata Matthias - Horvat - Vey Baertschi/Kenins/Hansen - Richardson - Dorsett Hamhuis - Tanev Edler - Murray Sbisa - Weber Stanton, Corrado Miller and Lack Overall Marleau adds much needed second line scoring up front. Murray gives new life to a defense instead of Bieksa plus he would be part of our core for the future. Overall these deals I believe are fair, and they make us better as a franchise. Marleau specifically for this next couple years with the Sedin core, and Murray filling Bieksa's spot now but also being a key to the future. Phil_314
1st trade: the Islanders tried to acquire Murray (2012 draft pick) by trading ALL, yes, ALL of their picks from that year for the #2 (the Islanders had #4 and #34, among others) and the Jackets said "no". Even if the Canucks were to "buy low", that price would still be a low-ball. No way does a steady 21-year-old with "Scott Niedermayer/ Duncan Keith" potential get dealt for, well, that. 2nd trade: No way we trade this year's 1st for an aging vet in Marleau. The cap hit doesn't work, the lack of ice time for the kids (e.g. Sven) wouldn't work and if the pick's not included we'd have to move other young assets when the team should be building for the future. elvis15
Those are terrible deals... Why would Bieksa waive to Columbus and why would they give up a prospective elite defenceman to get him? Why would we want to give up a 1st in any draft, and why would we go after Marleau considering his age and cap hit without sending a similar cap dump the other way? Justdean10
why would we want Marleau? Yah he's a great player, I'm not arguing that. But we are giving up a 1st for a player that's going to maybe play another 2-3 years.

Thanks for the thoughtful response! That's shocking that Columbus turned down that offer with the fact that they only picked two spots later! It was Griffin Reinhardt the Islanders took, right? Marleau is in a different class than Baerstchi. It's nice to let young guys play but we need to make another push during the Sedin era and Baertschi isn't that, in my opinion. Nuxfanabroad
Interesting HFboards deal featured Nash/CBJ; Ryan Ellis for Wennburg. Both sides appeared in agreement. Ellis: lost in the Nash D-stash; good young talent on a nice contract. Wennberg: young budding Swedish star, helping Nashville's needy offense with countryman, Forsberg. Monty
Columbus isn't run by morons. They're looking to add defense, not trade away one of the best young defensive prospects in the league for an aging defenseman, who is only getting worse. They also JUST traded away James Wisniewski, so they'll also most likely try and trade up to draft Provorov or stick where they're at and draft Werenski. So yeah, that trade is terrible. As for Marleau, I like him, but he's not worth it at this point.
