Offseason moves [Discussion]

Recommended Posts

u have little hockey knowledge and reading this was a waste of my valuable time. Thank you.

Wow take your head out of your a$$... Terrible...

On to the actual thread

I like how the thread title says Offseason moves but has no trades in it :P

Taking the players you mentioned, I'd be interested in.

Hamhus - Tanev

Edler - Clendening

Sbisa - Corrado

Not sure if it'd work out but I'd be hoping that Edler and a more offensive style d-man in Clendening could enspire some offensive numbers from both of them.

Corrado seems like a smart kid and hopefully can settle Sbisa down.

Overall I doubt this does happens it's tough bringing 2 kids up at once and expect them to be stable as d-men. Likely they share 6th/7th duties for the year.

Too many people think that a youth movement in store for next season.

The youth aren't entitled to any roster spots, they have to earn them.

Benning would be a fool to ship out 5 veterans for 5 unproven players during the offseason. If Baertschi out works Higgins in the preseason, that's fine. Higgins can be a healthy scratch. Until that moment, moving out so many vets is poor decision.

Yes somebody has to go. Salary restrictions will force Vancouver into a move or two. 1 or 2, not 5.

Realistically, this team is not going have huge overhaul this summer.

Draft, develop and deploy when deserving.

Sven makes the team next season regardless of what kind of camp he has

Probably just insert 2 young players Baertschi & Corrado

Sedin-Sedin-Kassian

Baertschi-Horvat-Vrbata

Burrows-Bonino-Hansen

Kenins-Richardson-Dorsett

Higgins only forward traded ( Matthais walks as a UFA )

Edler-Tanev

Hamhuis-Corrado

Sbisa-Bieksa

Miller

Lack

Realistically:

Matthias walks - money being an issue, Canucks rewarding physicality which he does not bring

Richardson walks - facing surgery, questions about his health

Weber walks - his 11 goals will be rewarded elsewhere

Sedin Sedin Kassian (Burrows if not healthy)

Baertschi Horvat (makes the jump to 2c) Vrbata

Higgins Bonino Burrows (A proper 3rd line, from which all 3 have admitted to prefering depth roles)

Dorsett Vey Hansen

Kenins

Shinkaruk first scoring call up, Jensen/Grenier as depth pieces

Edler Tanev

Hamhuis Corrado (he's ready)

Sbisa Stanton

Bieksa

Clendenning 1st call up

Miller

Lack

Markstrom dealt at draft or preseason

What I hope for:

Matthias,Richardson walk. Miller traded for picks, minimal cap coming back. Sign Soderberg for 3 years at 4m. Do something with Bieksa (mutual contract termination?)

Sedin Sedin Kassian

Baertschi Soderberg Vrbata

Bonino Horvat Hansen

Higgins Vey Dorsett

Burrows (Boom or Bust with him and Kass battling for top line), Kenins

Edler Tanev

Hamhuis Corrado

Sbisa Clendenning

Stanton

Lack

Markstrom

I struggle with some of our periphery guys being considered core. Guys like Burrows, Bieksa, and even Higgins while they are nice complimentary pieces one has to acknowledge they're way over paid and well past their prime. It might be hard to see these guys go but I think it's necessary for effective cap as well as youth movement.

That boom is both the sound of Michael Ferland injuring Dan Hamhuis, and the drop in the standings that comes from having Luca Sbisa as the #1 left-side D-man for the foreseeable future in the deal you just proposed. Move Edler and you might as well give the other team unhindered access to our defensive zone, he and Tanev have been the only strong pair and you'd tear them apart to get more forwards?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I'd Rayher build from within with your D-core. I agree that it is very hard to bring in two youngsters into our D-corps. But we need to start taking risks. We need to do things that we haven't done recently. Let the young guys play together. They're both mobile and with the core that we have, they will learn fast.

Guys I'd like to see go that won't go: Bieksa, Edler, Hamhuis, Higgins, Burrows (4.5 mill), and Miller.

Guys that will go: Richardson, Weber, Mathias and maybe Lack.

Sadly I fear Eddie Lack may not be a Canuck next year, his contract is up, he's stating he really wants to stay, but I am a worrier... Hope I'm wrong.

The young guys that are coming up are not as ready as many think and most won't be NHLers next year.

Young guys that will: Baertschi, Horvat (duh), Corrado, Clendenning (likely)

Guys who won't: Shinkaruk, McCann, Subban (duh), Jensen, Virtanen, Gaunce etc.

So that said... I'd like to be wrong about all that.

Except Richardson and Weber can go.

The issue is, when the media asked Bieksa and Hamhuis about their NMC. Both seemed to be taken aback when asked. Like it never has crossed their minds. Bieksa for sure will not waive. He bleeds Blue/Green/White. Hamhuis who is from BC, will probably not waive either.

So if management goes to both of them and says. Well if we can't trade you, you will get reduced minutes. Even with that you get the same results:

Edler Tanev

Hamhuis Clendenning/Weber/Corrado

Sbisa/Stanton Bieksa.

Weber we can trade the rights to, for a late pick. But it leaves us pretty stuck on the backend. Trading Matthias rights at the draft will get us something if he's not coming back. Because Higgins has a Limited NMC he'd be easier to move.

But this means we're pretty much stuck with Sbisa and Bieksa for a whole season. Unless we bench Bieksa and Sbisa every few games as a rotation. That's a helluva lot of salary burned on players not to play every game.

The solution fixes itself at the end of next season when Bieksa and Hamhuis' contracts expire.

I don't envy Benning's job this offseason.

I have a feeling that Benning won't stand as pat as many here think he will. I'm thinking that one or two fairly significant trades may happen that alter the lineup considerably.

The way in which the Canucks were essentially manhandled by the Flames was kind of pathetic and brought up huge questions about the physical capabilities of the team. This won't be solved by standing pat.
