drummer4now Posted April 30, 2015 Share Posted April 30, 2015 A Calgary family says their home has been destroyed by guests who rented it on the popular accommodation website Airbnb. "Our hardwood floors are all popping because there are pools of liquor. There's glass shards, there's dent in our walls, toilets flooded and plugged with condoms," says homeowner Star King. King says she agreed to rent her house in northwest Calgary to four adults, who said they were in town for a wedding. She and her husband, Mark, turned their keys over to the renters on Saturday night and went to stay with their in-laws in another part of the city.'We came and wished the home was burnt down to ashes. It would have felt way better.'- Star King, Airbnb host King says shortly after, she started receiving texts from neighbours, telling her the police had arrived. She was told that a "huge luxury party bus pulled up" and 100 people piled into her home. The King family had to plead with the renters to pack up and leave, who she said were "just totally wasted." "They threw paint all over my works that I was going to sell for probably a couple thousand. Just totally disrespectful behaviour," King told theCalgary Eyeopener. She overheard Calgary police at the scene describe the situation as a "drug-induced orgy." Mike and Star King survey the damage in their home, which was vandalized over the weekend. (CBC) Airbnb spokesman Jakob Kerr says the company has banned this guest from renting again through the website. "We have zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour and our team is working quickly to make this right," Kerr wrote in an email statement. "Over 35 million guests have stayed on Airbnb, and property damage is extremely rare." Quebec is already looking into beefing up rules surrounding rentals to tourists without a permit. Next month, the province plans to table a bill to regulate online home-sharing services, such as Airbnb. "We came and wished the home was burnt down to ashes. It would have felt way better," said King. She's hoping to tap into Airbnb's Host Guarantee, which provides up to $1 million in insurance "to eligible properties in the rare event of guest damages which are not resolved directly with the guest.' Airbnb has told CBC News the King family will be reimbursed through its Host Guarantee insurance and their team is offering full assistance to law enforcement in any investigation of this incident. Calgary police are investigating and estimate the damage is more than $50,000. "In the 27 years of policing that I've done, I've never seen a home so badly damaged from a weekend party, and of course, with this kind of rental situation," said Staff Sgt. Jim Leung. Leung says police are trying to locate the man who originally rented the property and intend to charge him with mischief over $5,000 for causing damage to the property. Hot topic in the news.. Not sure how I really feel about this one... on one hand the people who did this are complete jerks,a**holes, etc.. but on the other hand the homeowners seem shocked? One would assume they should have expected the worse from random strangers? Nice to see the company offering to fix this.. but like the homeowners have stated how can you live back in a place that has been so violated.. Used condoms in the toilets for crying out loud.. I guess I should rephrase my original sentence as in I hope they thought about the possibility of something like this occurring.. At least weighed in on the risks and benefits. Offensive Threat Posted April 30, 2015 Share Posted April 30, 2015 We used Airbnb in Seattle once and wont again due to having some nosy homeowner showing up every day and looking over our shoulder the whole time it seemed like. There are real agencies worldwide that can arrange professional level rental experiences for the same or maybe slightly more money. Well worth the extra paid. "Oh, these sinners are the worst of the bunch. Have they not remembered the 11th commandment given to Almechimelek on the mountain of blessing, 'Thou shalt not put used condoms in toilets'?" There's really nothing 'religious' to say here, as I don't think anyone in this story is religious - and if they are, this story didn't feel the need to expose that. If you want, there's stuff about debauchery and orgies and stuff being bad in the Bible, but if people aren't believers (which I'm guessing these people aren't), I'm not going to suggest that they try to adhere to the boundaries of something they aren't a part of. I agree with you though, I would never rent my place out to randoms. It would be different if I had a place specifically to rent out with stuff that wasn't my everyday possessions. In an interview on global, the owners went into their pantry, the guy bent down and pulled a boot out from under a shelf, and found an mostly eaten chicken wing inside. What kind of people do this? Posted April 30, 2015 Share Posted April 30, 2015 I've used AirBNB numerous times around the world and plan on using it again when I travel. $&!#ty for the homeowners, but they'll be reimbursed and hopefully the renters get prosecuted.
