awalk
Damn...that is INSANE. I will admit, I have rented from VRBO before where I told them I had 10 people coming, and maybe 15-20 of us came, but it was always just my friends, not a bus full of whoever I wanted to invite, and we kept the place super clean despite partying pretty good, were super respectful to neighbors, and did huge group cleans at leaving time as well. If you are going to abuse the system a bit, fck, be smart about it. Hope the renter gets hugely fined.

IMO it was clear what their intent was. Aren't there any criminal charges they could face?

Aren't there any criminal charges they could face? Not sure. Because they rented through a site and there were agreements made, it isn't breaking and entering. I suppose there is a chance the owners could press charges? But my knowledge of the law to that extent is non-existent. Either way, I hope the organizers of the event get some karmic backlash, because, as a person with friends who like to party and have fun, this brings a really bad name to those of us who go crazy without hurting others. awalk
Apparently, just read that the owners have the option to press charges for mischief causing damage over $5000. So, there you go. There is the criminal basis for charges to be laid. Not sure what the penalty is.
aeromotacanucks
it´s all about EDUCATION doesn´t matter the country, doesn´t matter the people. polite people will do fine while trash people will trash things... the problem when you rent your house is about the person renting your place. while a nice renter will increase the value of your home a bad renter will destroy your home... I´m the kind of person that neightbours asked for God. don´t like noise (Really don´t), don´t like excess of trash, on the paper. the way I rented I will deliver the house on the same way... aeromotacanucks
wow why? If I wanna have a party I will go outside where you can do all the noise you want without problem. at home it´s just simple stuff. no noise, no disturb, no loud music/computer. I have hypersensitive hearing meaning what you consider "quiet" for me is very loud. and I don´t like disturb others so people will not disturb me. If I want noise I go to the airport or a racetrack not at my home...

King_Canuckian
What a bunch of asses. I hope they get sued for way more than $5000. They obviously didn't have good intentions in the first place, and it gives legitimate renters a bad name. I've never used airbnb, but this sort of thing discourages potential hosts, and honest renters pay the price, having to go to overpriced hotels, and not getting the same experience they might have had otherwise. Like they said, the hosts would rather it got burned down. They can't even enter their own home without the reminder of what happened in there. Those feelings will never go away from a home they worked on, cleaned, loved, etc.
VanGnome
Not likely, unless they did something illegal in criminal law. Most likely damages/recision and a nasty fine. The article states RCMP intend to convict the perpetrators with criminal mischief, and I believe vandalism. I've never used AirBnB, but I imagine there are clauses in the rental agreement that egregious damages would likely violate the agreement, and the renters would be held liable for damages/potential criminal charges. As it should be, AirBnB can only do so much to screen it's renters, but once the agreement anything can happen, especially when substance abuse is introduced into the situation. One of the reasons AirBnB is helping the homeowners and has the homeowner guarantee against damages is to avoid what would end up being an onslaught of legal proceedings that would likely sink the company. I expect the homeowners will take the money, repair the damage and then list the house for sale, and purchase another property and will never use the AirBnB service to rent out their home again. Hard lesson to learn, but I could never see myself in any situation where I thought I'd need the income or even want the income from renting my home, my personal refuge to a complete and total stranger. Kind of like finding out that someone else has worn your boxers, just.. nope. Some things should remain sacred.

JoeyJoeJoeJr. Shabadoo
Hopefully they were Flame fans. If they were, the house most likely looked worse before the renters got there and they actually tried to clean it up a little.
