CHL. Would you support it?

Recommended Posts

Considering the Stanley Cup was a gift to Canada, from England, by the Governor General of Canada - Frederick Stanley (Stanley Park was named after him as well). I would think the "CHL" could be able to lay claim to the Cup.

According to Forbes, the top 5 largest revenue earning franchizes in the NHL inlcude Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver - this accounts for over 75% of the NHLs total operating income.

I am interested if anyone would support a Canadian Hockey League in a similar way to the CFL? Or do we prefer the current setup which a handful of franchizes subsidize YOY, offers a larger TV market and wider competition?

The cities inside Canada to make up the league: Tor, MTL, Van, CGY, EDM, OTT, Win, Halifax, Quebec, Miss'ga, Hamilton, Regina, Saskatoon and possibly Surrey and London.

*To make it more interesting the top Canadian team could play the top US equivalent after the playoffs are finished.

The CFL is like a "minor league" compared to the NFL. I don't think any of the Canadian franchises want to be downgraded to a league like that.

The NHL does have a lot of problems but it is still one of the top four sports leagues on North America. It'd be great to have teams in Canada winning the cup, but most of the players who win are Canadian and bring the cup back to Canada anyways. To me it's not really that big of a deal.

Just so you know, you may want to clarify either in the title or post, what you mean. the CHL (Canadian Hockey League) is already real. It consists of the junior leagues OHL, WHL, and QMJHL. You are referring to a new professional league with only canadian teams.

I think your fundamental misunderstanding is that, Canadian teams are not Canadian. By that I mean, the players aren't necessarily Canadian. Look at our team. The Sedins, along with Edler are both swedish. (arguably our MVPS) Ryan Miller is American, (also arguably our MVP) and Radim Vrbata is Czech. (Also arguably our MVP.) Our top 5 MVP candidates this year are all not Canadian. So I just don't really see the purpose of this in the end

Wouldnt call it a Downgrade. As alot of Canadian players are the stars of the nhl, toews, crosby, seguin, hall, kieth, ect.. I think the american league can take it as a downgrade if anything.. It would honestly be the opposite of the nfl, other than than the fact that the states can have alot more teams than us in canada. I like the thought of this but i like the nhl the way it is whether we are the ones making the revenue for the nhl or not..

All players would still be welcome to play in the new "CHL", however, the commercial make up would then sit inside Canada with 3 of the largest contributors to the NHLs bottom line making up the new "CHL". I appreciate that we would also water down both products which could impact ticket prices.... but I thought it could be food for thought (not that it would ever happen!).

I don't like this idea at all. The best way to get the Stanley Cup back to Canada is to win it, not to restrict it to a league only featuring Canadian teams. Even if such a thing was to ever happen, wouldn't any victory seem hollow?

Good point, which is why I was interested in other views. Personally, I am getting pretty fed up with "game management" which is rife accross the NHL. I'd just like to see good hockey played without any "game management" tied into TV commercialism.

So, you're saying the Canucks, Leafs, Jets, ect would leave the NHL to join this new "CHL"? No. I would be completely against that.

High end players wouldn't want to play in a league like that. It's like CFL vs NFL.

A Canadian team only league would be a secondary league to the NHL as I understand how you would have it set up. My understanding to what you have suggested is that all the current Canadian teams (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto) move to your new proposed "CHL" along with other Canadian teams.

I am assuming you then also assume that the best Canadian players in the world would want to play in this new "CHL". I do not see that happening at all as the majority would rather play where they would get paid and that would be where the tv revenue is the greatest. Another factor working against your idea is that all those other Canadian markets that currently don't have NHL trams don't have a team for a reason. Essentially they either don't have the arena and economy to support an NHL level franchise.

Good luck with the new "CHL"

What a stupid idea. The current TV deal with Rogers is with the NHL, if the Canadian teams were to leave they would forfeit all that money. So yeah the "CHL" would basically be hockey's version of the CFL. Of course this will never happen as the owners of the Canadian NHL teams aren't complete morons.

Also according to Forbes only 3 Canadian teams make the top 10 most valuable franchises so I'm not sure where the OP got his "facts" from.
