EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman has found a franchise to sink his teeth into. Sony Pictures has teamed withMRC to co-finance The Dark Tower, Stephen King’s novel series set in a world woven with magic and revolving around the gunslinger Roland Deschain. Sony will distribute what is planned to be the first in a series of movies. A complementary TV series is also being developed by MRC.

The new script is primarily based on the first book in the series, The Gunslinger, and the relationship between Roland and Jake. The film is a blend of horror and fantasy. The latest draft of the script is co-written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. It was totally reconceived by Goldsman and Pinkner from the version that had been previously developed and which took root first at Universal and later at Warner Bros. Goldsman is producing through his Weed Road with Imagine Entertainment’s Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins, and I believe the author is also in a producing capacity. Pinkner will be exec producer.

Sony and MRC will go right out after filmmakers with this script, and put this on the fast track that hard-core fans of King’s book have long desired. Numerous stars including Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe have eyed the role of the gunslinger, but that role won’t be filled until after the director is set.

King, who options his works for $1 and likes to see progress, has been incredibly patient as this mammoth project — it’s his answer to Tolkien’s Middle Earth novels — has taken its time and its twists and turns. He’s sparked about where the project is now.

“I’m excited that The Dark Tower is finally going to appear on the screen,” he said in a statement. “Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books.”

Said Rothman: “There are few projects out there that compare with the scope, vision, complex characters and fully drawn world that Stephen King has created with The Dark Tower. I am a giant fan. And, as Stephen himself does, we love the direction that Akiva and Jeff have taken. This is a great opportunity for a director to put his or her stamp on a cool global franchise.”

When Rothman was set to rise from his perch running TriStarto replace Amy Pascal as chairman, his biggest challenge was to create franchises. All around Hollywood, from Disney’s franchising of Marvel and Star Wars properties, Fox’s 3-sequel Avatar plans and Paramount hiring Goldsman to supervise Transformers sequels and spinoffs for his college pal Michael Bay, the studio business is all about the care and feeding of global franchises, and it is getting harder to find fresh intellectual properties. Rothman has found one with a wide built-in fan base.

My favourite set of novels I read while growing up. Only something like a 15 year gap between the 1st 3 books, and the remaining books that finished the series. I remember how disappointed I was when I finished the 3rd book in 1993, then asked where I could buy the 4th one. I wanted to read about that damn riddling train so badly!

HBO would unequivocally be my 1st choice for production. There is absolutely NO way that the depth and breadth of information contained in that immense series will properly translate into a movie. It simply cannot happen.

I'll watch it though, and my 1st impression is that I don't like the idea of Russel Crowe as Roland.

I'm in a hurry this morning, but may come back and put in a few cast wishes for characters like he, Jake, Eddie, and the Man in Black.

I'm hopeful they don't muck it up like the typical book to movie projects. At least we have the technology to do what could not have been done were this created even 15 years ago.

edit: thanks for the post infinite, I might just pull my books out and crack into them again this summer!

The man himself is no valid critic on his movie adaptations. He's generally sold out his works to whatever crappy production comes along with a buck, and the result has been a handful of decent movies and a whole pile of garbage. I don't have high hopes for the dark tower series and I also think it will fall flat with most audiences.

never read them myself, but i've thought about it (do i really want to commit myself to that many pages/hours for stephen king? lmao)

but i'm majorly disappointed that HBO isn't picking this up for a new series, especially after reading that article which pairs the ambition of Dark Tower to other franchises like Star Wars, Transformers, etc. ugh

my interest totally fell through the floor after that article

One of my favourite book series, even if it got a little weird at times. The Roland/man in black/Randall Flagg/Crimson King part of the story is excellent though, and how it ties in across all his other books has kept me reading all these years. The interactions with Jake and the others (Susanna and Eddie) tell a great story.

I've never held high hopes for any of the adaptations of King's books, but I'll see how this turns out.

Am I the only one who thinks The Gunslinger was godawful? I didnt read any more of the series because I wont waste my time like that. When They stated its "his answer to Tolkiens middle earth novels" I laughed. Deluded much? His "answer" was a self important joke of a novel. I hate books that assume the reader is an idiot and this book assumes the worst. But it was a kids book anyways I guess. Wasnt it?

But if they could turn Robert Ludlums bad Bourne books into good movies anything is possible.

I'm not a Stephen King fan at all, but I am a fan of the genre, so I'll probably give this a shot.

I have to say though, that other than The Shining, I've been pretty underwhelmed by SK movie adaptations.

You didn't enjoy The Shawshank Redemption?

Yeah, like OT said, I don't really consider that a Stephen King novel. But yes, I admit that I did forget about that one. Actually, I suppose I should modify my point in that his horror adaptations haven't done much for me. I did like The Green Mile as well...

I was thinking more of movies like Cujo, Maximum Overdrive, The Mist, Cat's Eye, Silver Bullet, Pet Semetary, Christine, Children of the Corn, Dreamcatcher, Tommyknockers, Firestarter, etc., etc.,.....

That was 90% Frank Darabonts screenplay and direction and 10% Steven Kings short story.

Sorry, the short story and the movie are pretty much the same. More spot-on than The Shining, certainly. However the direction was excellent.

Misery

Stand By Me (The Body)

Probably wraps up the decent ones. Didn't ever like Carrie, any version.

But Graveyard Shift ftw...

Seriously are the novels good? I have been told by my English high school teachers that King had become somebody who rambles on and on and on and whose work has not been worth reading since the 80's.

i beg to differ. i love his early stuff too (the tommyknockers, the shining, it, pet sematary) but i think books like the stand, carrie, salem's lot are way too overrated, while on the other hand his work in the 90s and the early 2000s: insomnia (crucial ties to the dark tower series), dreamcatcher, black house, bag of bones, rose madder, green mile, four past midnight, everything's eventual and hearts in atlantis are all vintage stephen king imho

same goes for the dark tower series. i loved the first 4 books, they were great, but 5,6 and 7 were his magnum opus, he took the series to another level.

I am floored. I never would have guessed anyone would adapt this particular King work.

I still vividly remember Roland and that kid going completely nuts because he was alive and dead at the same time, and how Roland ultimately rescued him after letting him plummet to his death.

A lot of crazy, terrifying and fascinating stuff.
