Langdon Algur
Although I approve of the recent changes to the draft lottery that make it harder for a team to get the top pick simply by finishing last, the amount of teams playing without honour for Connor this year was simply embarassing. Teams like Toronto, Buffalo, Arizona and Edmonton were openly tanking because simply put they had more incentive to loss then to win. When fans boo their team for wining (Buffalo) something has to be fixed. I am sick and tired of watching a league where teams aren't trying to win each and every game they play. I am also tired of seeing Edmonton get the top pick based on dumb luck or just being really really awful year after year.So how do we fix this? Glad you asked... My proposal is after the NHL regular season is done, those teams that don't make the playoffs play in their own mini-playoffs (or losser playoffs if you will) in a best of 3 bracked series to determine who gets the top pick. The concept would be similar to regulation rounds for non-medal teams in the olympics for delegation rounds in soccer. For those of you concerned about parity the bottom teams could be given home ice advantage over teams that just missed the playoffs. The winner of the tourney gets the first pick, the team that losses in the finals the second. The rest of the picks would be determined based reverse on regular season standings (again helping keep parity) This way owners can make more money (good for the league) by selling tickets to these games. We would have more games for fans to watch and the top pick would go to a team that actually earned it. Thoughts?
thejazz97
Just have the draft lottery for 3rd place with the current odds. No one would want the best chance, because it would mean losing out on a top 2 talent. Competitive end to the season, too.
Warhippy
That's far from modest honestly. best option is 14 balls go in. 14 ball comes out for 1st overall and then it goes on and on until all 14 teams out of the playoffs have their draft position That is the ONLY way it is fair. And while teams like LA or Boston who while good had an off year might pick up a McJesus It stops teams from tanking by giving everyone the SAME odds

-AJ-
I was looking for ways to complain about parity, but you addressed them decently. If the last place team could still get 3rd Overall even with losing this tournament, it kinda works. That said, there are many things to consider, including the NHLPA's opinion on the matter. Players playing all these new games for nothing more than 1st Overall (a good prize, but no Stanley Cup) might have issues with that.
Aladeen
It should be all teams who have NEVER selected first overall get a ball. Whoever's ball comes out gets 1st overall until the point where there is only one team who has never selected first then they automatically get it. All other placing and rounds determined by standings. Then all the teams who have never had two first overalls etc etc etc... Which would mean the coilers would never see a first overall again for like 200 years which is how it should be. 4 first overalls in 6 years is a joke and an embarrassment. Could it happen where someone wins the Cup and gets 1st overall? It could but at least its not 4 in 6 which is way worse IMO.

tyhee
The idea of a playoff to win 1st overall is intriguing. I suspect the players might have little interest and it might be hard to get it by the NHLPA. I think the format of the playoff might need some tweaking. The Kings would have had an excellent chance of winning McDavid this season, which seems inappropriate. The suggested format would also reduce the players available for the WC. Perhaps a 4 or 8 team single knockout tournament, with the players being paid, would be sufficient. thejazz97 suggested keeping the current lottery format with one change, that the lottery "winner" getting the 3rd pick instead of the 1st, if I understood his suggestion correctly. It seems to me that would encourage tanking more than the current system does. Presently, the 30th place team gets a 20% chance at the top pick. The suggested change to having the lottery be for 3rd selection would mean the 30th place team gets the 1st pick whenever they don't win the lottery, which rates to happen 80% of the time. Junkyard Dog
A playoffs to be the best worst team in the NHL... Rather stick to the lotto.
goblix
I agree their should be diminished odds to the amount of first overall the team have selected in X years prior to the draft... But we shall see overall how Edmonton shapes up, McDavid is a sweet player but with all the young contracts they do have they will eventually get the big UFA payday and at that day they'll likely end up like Pittsburg but with no actual goalie and no actual defence... A playoffs to be the best worst team in the NHL... Rather stick to the lotto. Lol imagine a playoffs of the top 8 worst teams in a playoffs trying win after a season of losing. Would never be approved by the NHLPA.
