We're back for the 2nd annual CDC Draft Rankings!

General Information

As per normal, the vote will be specific to the team drafting in that slot, you will have 10 players to choose from in the vote

(starting with the top 10 players ranked in the ISS Top 30 draft eligible players) . Make your choice not only by skill, but by team needs as well. Every couple of days I will create a new thread with the results of the vote, and a new vote for the next team. I will also post information about the next 5 players in the ISS top 30. Below the team's logo, you can click to see their current prospects over at Hockey's Future to have more organizational insight. Enjoy and make sure to come back for each vote!

(Remember that you're voting for what team will pick who in their position. Not just what team should draft what player.)

Congratulations to Matthew Barzal for being selected 6th overall by the New Jersey Devils!

Who will the Philadelphia Flyers draft 7th overall?

Current Flyers Prospects

According to the ISS Rankings, these are the next top 5 draft eligible players.

8evBBOl.jpg

A big-bodied power winger with the ability to physically dominate, making him a prominent forechecking presence every night. Possesses good hands that can be used to make crisp passes or to let loose accurate, NHL-level shots; paired with his strength and skating ability, his skill set allows him to contribute offensively, as well as create space for teammates. Source

An offensively gifted defenceman who can direct the game's pace when the puck is on his stick. Provorov is a quick and agile skater with an accurate release on his shot, which he can get off anywhere below the blue line; creates many chances on the power play and can even create offense during the penalty kill. Is an adroit and creative passer who knows how to use his teammates well. All-in-all, a complete defenceman who knows how goals are scored and executes accordingly. Source

An exceptionally talented playmaker and always a consistent threat on the ice; Rantanen is a combination of elite-level hockey sense, silky smooth hands, and nimble skating. Needs to improve his shot and physical play, as he doesn't take advantage of his size in many situations. All-in-all, an intelligent, big-bodied forward that oozes skill. Source

Pavel Zacha is an offensively dynamic center with the size, speed, and skill to make a significant impact on the game. He can play physical, but is at his best when using his high-end offensive abilities, such as his shot, stickhandling, and footspeed, to generate numbers in the opposition's end of the ice. All-in-all, Zacha is a lethal weapon that can be depended upon to create, and finish, dangerous scoring chances whenever he is on the ice. Source

nnrUqP3.jpg

A smooth-skating, puck-moving defenceman that has a strong understanding of the game. Excels in key situations and is able to execute under pressure. Possesses good vision and awareness on the ice; uses his abilities to put offensive and defensive pressure on the opposition. All-in-all, a very strong all-around defenceman that consistently brings his game every night. Source

I'm going to go a bit off the board and say Zach Werenski. American kid plays for Michigan and has somewhat of a mean streak in him. Sounds like a typical Flyers prospect to me.

By mean streak i mean he plays a physical style of game.

Again, we're going by need here. So if Provorov magically slips past the Hurricanes (who desperately need defense), then the Flyers will snatch up Provorov in a heartbeat. This is a team starving for help on the backend. With Streit turning 38 this year, they'll need a young puck moving defenseman. Provorov is exactly what they need.

It s basically between Prov, Crouse, and Rant.

Philadelphia's biggest need is a skilled winger though.

While Philadelphia's defense is poor now they do technically have a pretty decent crop of defensive prospects.

- Samuel Morin

- Travis Sanheim

- Shayne Gostisbehere

- Robert Hagg

Where as they have really no noteworthy winger prospects. Voracek and Simmonds are their only 2 reliable wingers (though Simmonds game is not a prototypical wingers and you may be able to say Matt Read's season was a fluky off year). Beyond those two though everyone else is ether under impressive or a center who struggles to produce at wing like Schenn, Lecavalier, and Laughton.

I feel they would take Crouse or Rant personally.

Though not PMDs per se, the Flyers have a pretty good core of D prospects in Gostisbehere, Hagg, Morin and Sanheim.

If anything the lack another good F prospect in the 18-21 year old age range.

What is it that you guys see in Crouse?

Crouse is a goodt player dont get me wrong, but he's not the type of player you choose at top 10. Yes, hes a high risk, high reward guy, yes he's somewhat talented, but he's the type of player that you pick somewhere between 15th to 30th.

Im not saying hes a bad player, but I think the World Juniors helped his draft stock rise ridiculously. We'll see how things shape up in the draft.

And those that say "You could say the same thing to Virtanen", that's not true. Virtanen has way more things in his toolbox, and he's over a point per game. Obviously stats aren't the whole story, however Virtanen definitely has things that are is worthy to be picked at #6th. Crouse was 63rd in the entire OHL, which isnt the greatest for someone that is supposedly going to go 5th/6th overall. He could be the next Phillpe Paradis if you compare the stats of his season to Crouse's.

I honestly think Crouse is a good player, but a player his type should be picked somewhere between 15th or something among those lines. I don't want to bring a debate about if he's top 5 worthy or anything so back to the topic...

I picked Provorov. Guy is fantastic and excels in his defensive game as well as a powerhouse in his offense too.

Provorov. Philly needs blue liners in a big way and Pro would be the perfect fit.

Umm....

Philly has Morin, Sanheim, Gostisbehere and Hagg and they are all LHD. They definitely don't need another one.

Most of the concerns about Crouse come from the fact that he wasn't able to put up points but having a team with an inept offense can do that to a prospect. Kingston was a team which just did not have the supporting cast to help Crouse produce. I don't exactly know the numbers but once Bennett came back Crouse started producing at a decent rate and had a good playoffs. I think scouts watching Crouse have seen that he has played well all year despite not having the linemates who can finish his plays and this has caused his numbers to dip. Also Crouse wasn't some unknown quantity before the World Juniors, he was rated quite highly before then as well.

Crouse is a very good prospect, he doesn't belong in the top 5 but after that I think anyone picking him will be happy with the pick. At this point scouts see very little weakness in him, has size, skates well, is an excellent two way player and is more skilled than anyone gives him credit for. Philly will relish putting together a line of Crouse-Giroux-Voracek.

Oh ya?

Who's on their back end right now?

I don't believe anyone is denying the current roster Flyers defense is poor but that isn't entirely relevant to Provorov who is an 18 year old kid in development who won't be relevant to the current roster. He would essentially be joining what has become a deep defensive prospect pool in Philly.

Many of the current Flyers defensemen are coming off the books soon. MacDonald being the only defensemen who is signed beyond the next 2 seasons and with Hextall saying he strongly wants to hold onto his younger players and let them develop Prov would likely become relevant when the Flyers defense consists of Morin, Sanheim, Gostisbehere, and Hagg.

Basically the Flyers are aware the defense is a problem now but given what they have growing on the farm they aren't exactly worried about the future at defense. With that said I would love it if they got him. Defense is extremely important and they could ultimately end up with one of the best defensive line ups in hockey years from now if they add him on.

In other words defense isn't a huge need for the Flyers unlike wingers.

With that being said you could still absolutely be right about them taking Prov. They could see Prov as the best player on the board and to good to pass up and address wingers another way such a FA or maybe trading an excess center like Laughton or Schenn for a natural winger.

Philadelphia does also have a decent amount of picks in which is projected a deep draft.

- 1st Round Picks (2)

- 2nd Round Picks (1)

- 3rd Round Picks (2)

- 4th Round Picks (2)

- 5th Round Picks (1)

- 6th Round Picks (1)

- 7th Round Picks (1)

They could always take Prov then address winger later as some good ones should still be around.

So you could be right.
