[Signing] Jordan Subban

Recommended Posts

Will spend next season in Utica, probably struggle defensively at times but hopefully can be much stronger after his second full AHL season.

Give him a turn in the big leagues at the age of 22-23, when our right side will mainly be Tanev, Clendening and Corrado.

We'll have to see the final details but that quote says "$755 000 AAV," which would indicate the cap hit (including bonuses). If that's the case, then Subban's deal would be right in line with several existing contracts for Canucks middle round picks.

Genuinely hoping he doesn't end up a bust like most of the Canucks middle round picks.

Sweet! Now cdc can stop ripping JB for not signing him and start ripping JS for not being big enough to make the NHL.

What took GMJB so long to do this?! He can't GM! He GMs like GMMG!!

And WTF JS you gotta grow bro!

Actually, I thought bonuses were not included, especially since they haven't been earned yet. Maybe the signing bonus but not the performance ones.

Bonuses count towards the cap hit whether they're achieved or not.

Team has the option to defer bonus cap hits on the following years salary cap like Boston did this year with Jarome Iginla.

yeah all bonuses count against the cap until they can no longer be obtained. But teams are allowed to exceed the cap by the amount of all bonuses, but if any of those bonuses are realized and it pushes the team beyond the cap then those bonuses count against the cap next season.

Point was, the quoted cap hit cannot include bonuses that are performance-based because they are contingent. I've seen it possible for rookies to earn up to 2 or 3 mil on an ELC.

It gets a little confusing between past, present, and future "cap hits" but "AAV" (average annual value) usually refers to the full amount for the contract, including the salary and all potential bonuses, divided by the term length. Past cap hits are what the team was charged against their cap. Present cap hits may or may not have bonuses deferred to the next year (depending on what the club has elected to do). But future cap hits should include all the bonus amounts (which can be then be deferred when the time comes, and the majority of which will go unearned, in the case of performance bonuses).

AAV is generally understood as the future cap hit, which includes all the bonuses (including performance bonuses).

That's why sites like Capgeek and General Fanager list Virtanen with an AAV of $1,744,166 and a current (2015-16) cap hit of $894,166.

The tweet used AAV so unless they misrepresented things, the amount quoted should include the bonuses (even "contingent" performance bonuses).

Of course, that may have been a reporting error and we won't truly know until the specific details get leaked.
