TEL AVIV — A controversial plan to segregate Palestinians from riding the same buses as Israeli settlers in the West Bank was scrapped within hours of the plans being made public Wednesday, an Israeli official confirmed to NBC News.

The decision was taken by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Yaalon launched the three-month pilot program following repeated complaints from Jewish settlers who ride on the buses, The Associated Press reported. Some Jewish settlers allege the Palestinian workers constitute a security threat and frequently engage in sexual harassment of female Jewish riders.

The new edict would have required Palestinian laborers entering Israel each day for work to return to the West Bank through the same checkpoint, and not travel alongside Israelis, according to the AP.

Dr. Hannan Ashrawi, executive committee member for the Palestine Liberation Organization, was among those who criticized the policy. She told NBC News on Wednesday that the plan was "absolutely disgraceful and shameful."

She said: "Israel is proving it is an apartheid state, with racism and discrimination in the parcel of discrimination policy." Ashrawi added the country was "acting like a colonial settler state, and it's time it is held accountable."

Yariv Oppenheimer, director of Israeli non-governmental organization Peace Now, said: "The separation of buses exposes the Israeli occupation at its highest ugliness."

He said that at a time when the U.S. was marking the decades-old struggle against bus segregation, "here in Israel we are going back to dark times of apartheid on buses."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Traveling through the same checkpoint isn't bad, IMHO, especially if they're viewed as a security threat. However, separating them from Israelis is. If sexual harassment is really that big of a deal, they can put up signage indicating that that sort of behaviour is unwelcome and have fines for reported and verified cases of harassment.

Someone was going on and on and on a while back about how Israel is not racist, or at least not more or less racist in its policies as most developed countries

Well...

You know. Just saying.

Are you saying the Palestinians can take a Taxi? :bigblush:

What? That because a few people thought having separate buses for different groups of people (which is wrong) means every Israeli is a racist?

Sometimes I really wonder...

I am sure the next move will be to 'concentrate' the Palestinians in special 'camps'.

What a cruel irony this is...

If these two groups were reversed, the UN would be screaming bloody murder and the US would have invaded by now.

Human rights only matter if you are rich.

Israelis and Palestinians are citizens of two different governments. There are many Arab Israelis. If they were segregating Israeli Arabs, you might have a point.

Also this plan was scrapped after public outcry. Funny such a racist place would be so offended.

How was this idea even considered?

They are citizens of two governments at war with each other? Try crossing a us border as a non-us citizen and demand to be treated like a us citizen. And we are two of closest allies in the world.

Where did the outcry come from? Why did he really scrap it? Come on man

I've been to Israel. They have signs designating what IS and ISN'T an area for workers or non Israeli citizens. It is an apartheid area and it is beyond racist.

Or should I link some of the fun quotes from the "new same as the old only more to the right" government?

Also, they share the same city, same lineage same history and basically the same culture. Your very comment denotes that this is segregation and racism. You cannot share all of that and demand two tier lifestyles based on your parentage

Jesus H Christ man that's like the crap going on in Mohawk territory in Ontario right now. Sorry bud you're only half blood, get out. You married a white person get out.

How the hell can you keep defending this crap is beyond me. Let alone why you cannot just sit back be objective and admit that some of the crap they are pulling is just so far beyond wrong as to be laughable.

The most successful people, on average, in Israel are Arab Christians:

And please stop it with this "I've been to Israel" crap. You don't speak either Arabic or Hebrew. You wandered around as a tourist there, in what is a war zone (for probably not more than few days). You did not successfully engage any any large segment of the population and are in no position to make generalizations.

Nice try. That's not even an accurate summary of what the article says.

This is exactly why the forum should bring back the thumb down button.

My friend just got back from Israel last week. He's not a simple tourist, his wife has family there. Racism in that country is a very real part of daily life. It's closer to eastern Europe than Canada or any developed western nation.

Israel should drop the whole Jewish state designation, it's not going to work out for them in the long run anyway.

So what

What a frigging joke pal. I have been there as an impartial person without ties or bias and saw how people were treated and somehow that is "not enough"

Get over yourself.

You can attempt whatever pathetic defense you want of things. Israeli Arab are NOT palestinians. This is a story about segregating Palestinians not people of half blooded ethnicity.

Stop the deflection crap it's old it;s overblown and your ignorance in refusing the truth is so tedious as to be laughable.

Bottom line. The Israeli government was going to forcibly make people living within the same city ride on different buses or in the back seat so "good upstanding Israelis" could sit up front without fear of being polluted or made unclean, but massive lashing out from both the international community and the centrists in government forced their hand.

The fact you somehow deny that israel is indeed an apartheid area full of massive racial issues shows

A: You are beyond bias

B: You are ignorant to what is really happening

or

C: You refuse to admit it because you cannot bear to be wrong (see A and B )

Just because I am not a hebrew, palestinian Israeli or speak ANY of those languages does NOT discount what i saw anymore than your sheer bias to the whole situation makes you somehow an expert,.

Good day.

PS, rest assured ANY story i see you comment on regarding any other part of the country or any first nations people will result in my responding as such

And please stop it with this "I've been to Province X or Y" crap. You don't speak either French/any First Nations Dialect. You wandered around as a tourist there, in what is a war zone (for probably not more than few days). If you want to answer with ignorance, rest assured I can give you the same.

You spend way too much effort arguing with someone who does not deserve that effort.
