drdeath
So he runs the team further into the ground. Gets fired. Makes bank. This man is a genius.
cuporbust
Mark my words. Luke Richardson. I'm not sold on him but Murray hired him when he was GM'ing the Senator's AHL club. Hmmm. Maybe. But I would have to think Crawford is also in the conversation. Best coach not coaching in the NHL right now Imo who's MO is developing young players. Fakename70
Surprised he went to Toronto, I guess. But, not totally shocked that he left Detroit at all. If he had planned to stay, he'd have re-upped long ago, never even getting anywhere near the bidding war stage.

Chalky
I wonder if the Leafs would continue to have to overpay if they decided to just stop overpaying for a while. This is the single most ridiculous signing they've made since David Clarkson. I hope every other NHL coach and potential NHL coach texts Babs a thanks for skyrocketing the coach salary floor. cuporbust
I honestly think Marc Crawford would do really well in Buffalo. He might even be a better fit than Babcock
Argon
Its a no brainer, 6.25 mil a year for 8 years. I mean, Quenville makes the next highest at 2.75 mil and gets no where near as much vaycay time
DrJockitch
I think part of the 8 year term is that the rebuild is still happening. I could see Phaneuf staying if his trade value isn't great as Babcock seems to know how to make d-men like him work. Can't see Kessel staying. The rebuild will be helped by selling off as many current players as possible. I could see Kadri or Bozak staying, Kadri in particular, and seeing if Babcock can fix them if not there is always the deadline to sell them off. What I want to see is if they can fix the drafting and development as they have essentially cleaned house in those areas. Hard part will be to get bad enough to get high in the lottery next year while having good coaching. Saw how everyone turned on Nolan this year if the Sabres won a couple games. For better or worse Leafs fans know this year they are cheering for the tank and Bab's don't play that. The Leafs are betting a fortune that after 1-2 bad years that Babs and Shanny can attract some free agents to speed up the turn around, they probably are still having their Stamkos fantasies. Unfortunately over the last few years Detroit stopped being able to attract the free agents like they used to.

That is way too much money for him. His biggest claim to fame is one Stanley Cup and winning with Team Canada (strongest team in international play. It doesn't take a genius to coach them to wins). I'm not a Babcock fan, but I'm also not a Luke Richardson fan. Richardson will be the next coach.

The "tank for McDavid" thing backfired first, now the "screw over Ted Nolan for Babcock" plan has failed. I don't know why Buffalo think a guy who's so used to winning would want to come to a team that not only loses on purpose, but treats it's personnel like garbage. Sounds like Murray is just whining because his own plan backfired.

I loved the tank so the rest of the league's fans can cry all that they want to, but I'm still very disappointed and not happy about how LaFontaine and Nolan were treated. That's where the poetic karma/justice comes in. Tanking has nothing to do with it. Nolan will be coaching the Vancouver Giants soon enough anyways. I'm happy that he's getting another gig. McBackup
Ouch! That's a cheap shot at the Leafs. Funny but still a cheap shot. Tims and the Leafs are basically the same thing anyway. Garbage product but slap a maple leaf on there and suddenly millions love it.
Toyotasfan
Wow, throw enough money at him and how could he not sign! But what are they getting, a coach who has rode the coat tails of talented players and been criticized his whole career for coaching teams with no physical toughness. After the Leafs fire him they will be paying him for a long time. Baha haha ha! [ Canada's Team] give me a break!
SabreFan1
Well I was right. Sabres offered Babcock slightly more money, but he chose to coach the Maple Leafs because, well... they're the Leafs. He's going for his legacy and a place in the HHoF now. Winning a cup with the Leafs would be his best way to do it. I don't blame him for choosing the NHL's premier organization, but his legacy is now screwed... lol http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/25191867/mike-babcock-says-sabres-offer-was-bigger-than-maple-leafs

This isn't anything like David Clarkson IMO. The Leafs making Babcock as Head Coach adds legitimacy to their rebuild since the belief is that Babcock is one of the best at getting the best and developing young prospect as what he did in Detroit. Plus getting allows future Free Agents and possible quality players with NTC to be traded to give Toronto a consideration.
