(Article) Cory Pronman mock draft

Every team should have the same chance at any pick in the lottery.

The current format rewards losing teams, these days for the extra effort of tanking.

Even the NHL practiced it with their Arizona franchise by unloading the team of most veterans this past trade deadline and for what? A missed chance at McDavid or Eichel.

Arizona didn't tank enough.

Deplorable really.

I was singing the praises of Travis Sanhiem prior to the draft last year and he has had a fantastic season following last years draft, this year I really like Rasmus Anderson,

I really hope Benning can get a 2nd rounder and pick him up.

Would love to see the Canucks get Kylington with their first and Anderson with a second.

I typically don't look at the players until after the playoffs wrap up. But I've been preaching for top defensive prospects for years now (even though I'm still waiting for Jarred Tinordi to pan out).

That said, with a deep draft, of course you pick the best player available, regardless of position. If we really want that can't-miss defensive prospect, you trade up or down with a later pick or throwaway prospect. And from last year, we know that JB isn't afraid to part with such players.

'And with the 23rd selection in the 2015 NHL Draft the Vancouver Canucks are pleased to select ... the best player available'. Honestly the only position I would not draft is goalie (even though I think you'll see one taken late). The Canucks do not have a single prospect or enough depth at any position to warrant not selecting whoever GMJB thinks is BPA. You can find a stop gap if need be ie Baerchi Clendenning. You get the best talent you can into your system and make it work. Saying we have too many Centers is like saying we have too much money

Often the BPA is a defenseman, and we NEED defensemen.

We do need a highly skilled centre capable of centering the 1st line once Henrik retires but another pressing need for the Canucks is building the left wing. I would pick dmen in the later rounds because dmen take too long to develop unless you can pick top 10 and draft a 'Seth Jones' type who is ready to step in. If Vancouver is going to get a dman capable of running the PP, it will be via an overpayment via UFA or by picking the pockets of a GM suffering a mental lapse.

They could add a ton of scoring up front and have dmen that can get a shot to the net, it doesn't have to be a Webber or Keith type shot, just one that gives the talented forwards a chance at a rebound. If Vancouver is going to rebuild on the fly and make the playoffs every year, their chances of drafting a really high end offensive dman depends on luck.

I don't always agree with Pronman but in this case, he might be right. If Beauvillier is on the board at pick #23, he might very well be the most talented offensive forward available. And that's not a bad direction for this team to go in at this stage of the game, given how many good 2-way forwards we already have in the system.

And Beauvillier looks to be more of a LW/C than a pure centreman, so the "too many centres" argument might not fit here.

After a little digging, I noticed a few things:

The kid has put up around 5 shots a game this past season. He was the top scorer for Shawinigan, and had 30 points more than anyone on his team (might have scored even more with better teammates). He's been recently listed at between 5'10.5" and 5'11" and around 175-180 lbs, depending on the source. His brother Francis, at the same age (17), was about 5'11 - 6'0" and 165-170 lbs. Francis Beauvillier is now playing the UNB Varsity Reds, and they list him at 6'2", 200 lbs. So some room for potential growth. He has the skillset and natural ability to have elite potential, although it's far from guaranteed. Nonetheless, if we are looking for a kid with possible 1st line upside, Beauvillier looks like a good option (if available in the late 1st round).

I believe he was named Captain at the prospects game as well so he must have some leadership skills.

Not sure if he goes at 23 but if a teams gets him early in the 2nd I think it will be a great pick.

Off topic...

Look for Francis to return to Pro hockey once his time in the AUS is done. He's a smart kid who decided to get his education while he was eligible and continue playing hockey. He's got the wheels and defensive acumen to be a good bottom 6 forward at the Pro level.

It's been unusual for kids to take this route in the past but it is going to become more common with Canadian kids in the coming years, as that league gets better overall. It's the same path Joel Ward took.

Buttons final ranking from 1 to 100. IF!!!! Benning can pick up some 2nd and third round picks Cancuks could very easily clean up on PMD in this draft.

As I've said a few times now, if we can garner 4 or 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, I'd have NO problem with Benning and Linden draft 3 or 4 D men in the first few rounds of the high risk high reward potential.

The Hockey News usually gets pretty close and is based on anonymous NHL scout polls taken . They have Thomas Chabot for the Vcr 23 rd pick. Decent size and a smooth skating D'man. Seems to fit what we are looking for

Would love to move up into the top 10 and take either Provorov or Werenski and then with the 23rd take Kylington or Meloche

Edler - Provorov/Werenski

Kylington/Meloche - Tanev

Tryamkin - Corrado

Our forwards are pretty much set with a tweak or two here and there, so defence should be the main focus.
