Robin Williams’ suicide abetted by moon?

Robin Williams was found dead on the morning of Aug. 11, 2014, after committing suicide during the night.

There has been plenty of coverage about his mental health and battle with depression since then. I was curious, though, that in all of the reporting about his death, there was never any mention about the possibility that the moon may have played a part in the timing of his demise.

On the night of Aug. 10, 2014, the moon was dubbed a supermoon, because it was about 31,000 miles (50,000 kilometers) closer to Earth than it is during its farthest point in orbit. It was the largest, brightest, and closest moon in 3.5 years, and it happened the very night that Robin Williams took his life.

Robin was found dead in his home, a luxury mansion, which had enormous windows in it, enough that the supermoon’s brightness would have practically lit up the inside walls of his house.

Does the moon influence behaviour? Popular legend has it that the full moon brings out the worst in people: more violence, more suicides, more accidents, more aggression. It is known as the Lunar Effect. Even the word “lunacy” meaning “insanity” comes from the Latin word for moon.

A paper published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine claimed that 80% of randomly selected nurses and 64% of doctors in emergency rooms in unnamed hospitals believed that lunar cycles affect mental health.

Did the August 2014 supermoon assist in Robin Williams’ death? If so, then maybe the bright orbiting circle that night wasn’t a supermoon. Rather, it was the dark side of the moon.

People sometimes do tend to go a bit crazier on nights with full moons... however, I don't think it affected Williams' choices. Depression can take a pretty nasty toll on people, no matter what stage the lunar cycle is in.
