(Value of) Brent Seabrook

Recommended Posts

seabrook is older, slower and costs more

Seabrook is 364 days older, so it's not as if he's ancient. He doesn't cost that much more than Edler either. He also barely misses a game. Most importantly, he's a lot better than Edler.

But this is all moot because there is no way the Black Hawks trade him for a left handed defenseman.

What happened to getting younger?

It would be nice to get younger but if we could add Seabrook who can do everything that Tanev does PLUS can play offence and be nasty I think we have to. Chicago is only going to be in cap hell for this summer. So time to act is now

What about something around Tanev+?

What happened to getting younger?

I'd rather get better than younger. If the goal is simply to get younger I know some kids playing the local TimBits league we could sign :)

The question is, why throw away and current and future asset for a current asset?

Seabrook is 30. He's got one year left on his contract. He could be lost to free agency in a year. He'll probably be effective this coming season, get another good-sized contract and then face age-related decline during his next contract.

Tanev is 25. He's got five years left on his contract. He can't be lost to free agency until he's the age Seabrook is now. The next five years should be his best.

How many years of Tanev is one season of Seabrook worth? I think it's a lot less than five.

Even if one assumes they re-sign, do we really want to sign Seabrook to a big contract when he's 31 and we're still at least a couple, probably more and possibly quite a few more, seasons away from having a good chance to win a Cup? Remember how we on CDC just love those big, long-term contracts given to players who are, not surprisingly, declining in their thirties.

Imo taking Seabrook for Tanev, in the position of the Canucks, would be a serious mistake. That's the sort of move a team knocking on the door of going all the way which has a strong pool of young defencemen should make.

That situation doesn't describe the Canucks. There are young d-men in the system who can be expected to be NHL players, but none are elite prospects. Imo the value we're getting from Tanev in 3-5 years is far more important than the difference between Seabrook and Tanev right now.

Chi will be looking to dump cap and acquire assets not sure we could swing it. maybe something around Cassles

They'll be looking to dump salary, but they'll look at Sharp and Oduya. They have Artemi Panarin coming in to (hopefully) fill in for Sharp, and Ville Pokka should be ready to take over for Oduya.

They're not getting rid of Seabrook.
