Vancouver: C Nick Bonino, G Eddie Lack

Philadelphia: C Sean Couturier, PHI 2nd '15 (60th)

-Philly gets some cap relief. Bonino is on a very cap friendly contract and can contribute as the 3C. Lack can take the starting job from Mason or be a much better backup than Emery. Both on cheap contracts.

-Couturier is stuck behind Giroux and Schenn on the depth chart. He's an RFA and getting a raise. Philly is cap strapped. Might have to take back Lecavaliers contract to make it work. NOT Macdonalds contract

Vancouver: LW Chris Higgins, C Linden Vey, RW Nicklas Jensen

New Jersey: D Adam Larsson, NJ 3rd '15 (67th)

-NJ has no young forward prospects. Vey had a decent rookie season but there is no room for him on this team. Jensen has also been made obsolete in our system. NJ has good young defenseman but bad forward prospect depth. Higgins gives them a versatile vet that can move up and down the lineup. Help they young guys out.

-Larsson has fallen in NJ's depth chart and had some tension between him and the club last season. Still has potential but looks like he could use a change of scenery from NJ.

Vancouver: D Kevin Bieksa

Toronto: TOR 3rd '15 (65th), TOR 3rd '16

-We all know what Bieksa brings. Last season was rough for Juice but he is still a gritty serviceable defenseman. He is a great leader and can help their young defenseman like Reilly and Gardiner.

-We make changes to the core and add some picks.

Daniel Sedin-Henrik Sedin-Alex Burrows

Sven Baertschi-Sean Couturier-Radim Vrbata

Jannik Hansen-Bo Horvat-Zack Kassian

Ronalds Kenins-Brad Richardson-Derek Dorsett

Brandon McMillan

Dan Hamhuis-Adam Larsson

Alex Edler-Chris Tanev

Luca Sbisa-Adam Clendening

Ryan Stanton

Frank Corrado

Ryan Miller

Toronto is decent. I don't even want to discuss the first two, though.

I think Jazz is overly kind in saying Toronto is decent.

Trade 1: Philly-The OP's justification was partly Philadelphia getting cap relief, but this doesn't give Philadelphia cap relief. Couturier is not a free agent, he has another year at a cap hit less than Bonino, and Emery is unlikely to get a raise on his last contract which was cheaper than Lack is making. (I checked both nhlnumbers and generalfanager about Couturier's contract status. Both show him with another year, salary at $2 million, cap hit $1.75 million. Bonino's cap hit is $1.9 million. Couturier should be more expensive in 2016-17, but not for 2015-16. Otoh, Lack's salary should go up considerably in 2016-17.)

Philly, needing to shed cap, ends up with a slightly higher cap hit after this deal. Canucks get essentially no change in theirs, depending on what Markstrom makes this coming season.

Trade 2: At present this may be fair but taking into account the future, New Jersey gets hosed here. They get three spare parts that are surplus to the Canucks' needs and may do them very little good, ever, for a good young defenceman.

NJ has some forward prospects though they aren't very good ones. I agree with the original post there. The problem is that Vey and Jensen may not be much help to them.

NJ should expect a GOOD forward prospect for Larsson, not a depth forward and someone who isn't progressing in the AHL.

Vancouver isn't exactly desperate for another young right handed d-man who would be #6 or 7 on their depth chart, either. For right hand defencemen the Canucks currently have, waiver eligible next season, Tanev, Bieksa, Weber, Clendening and Corrado. That being said, Larsson is probably good enough that Canucks would take him and move one or more others to keep him. The point is that it WOULD require getting rid of someone else, probably one of their other young RH d-men.

Trade 3-Toronto.

A while back Toronto president Brendan Shanahan was reported to have authorization for a full scale rebuild, with expensive veterans including Kessel and Phaneuf reportedly not in their plans. Among many sources: http://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/699706

Giving up draft picks for Bieksa, a declining veteran who this season struggled to contribute hockey-wise (though he still contributed by sticking up for teammates) with a cap hit of $4.6 million, is directly against the direction the Leafs plan to take.
