Canucks Apparently Want to Trade Miller, But Can't

From the Boston Globe:

There’s no stopping market for goalies

A 24-game run through February, March, and April convinced the Senators that Andrew Hammond was a legit NHL goalie, even if some of his success was because of luck. Hammond showed his warts in two playoff starts against Montreal, both of which he lost.

But part of the reason the Senators signed Hammond to a three-year, $4.05 million extension was their desire to maximize assets. Robin Lehner, formerly the No. 2 to Craig Anderson, would draw more interest on the trade market than Hammond. Ottawa can acquire help by trading Lehner, who’s under contract through 2017. The big 23-year-old Swede has ace stuff, assuming he recovers from the concussion that ended his season early.

Ottawa, however, isn’t the only team shopping a Swedish goalie.

Vancouver is seeking return for Eddie Lack. The Canucks would prefer to retain Lack and fellow Swede Jacob Markstrom, but Ryan Miller, due $12 million annually over the next two seasons, is unmovable because of his age (34), performance (29-15-1, 2.53 goals-against average, .911 save percentage in 2014-15), and contract.

Markstrom will be Miller’s backup — and possibly his replacement. The 25-year-old Markstrom has been outstanding in the AHL playoffs for Utica. Through three rounds, Markstrom went 11-7 with a 1.87 GAA and .931 save percentage. Utica and Manchester kicked off the Calder Cup Final on Saturday. Markstrom will be restricted on July 1.

Lack did not play well in the playoffs against Calgary. He was 1-3 with a 3.03 GAA and .886 save percentage. Miller closed out the series after returning from a knee injury. Lack has one year left ($1.15 million average annual value) before becoming unrestricted. Lack does not have as much value on the market as Lehner.

Buffalo, Edmonton, and San Jose require goaltending help.

They mentioned Lehner earlier, I think he might be the one who gets to go hang with Eichel in Buffalo.

It's too bad about the whole Miller thing. He's a great goalie, but like the author mentioned, his contract and record (amongst other things) are some pretty big cons.

We could retain a percentage of his contract, but do we really want to have two olympic goalies on the payroll for the next two years?

Does that even say the Canucks want to trade Miller?

Obviously, there are markets for proven starters, and they're named. Buffalo, Edmonton and SJ are all potential suitors for Ryan Miller. SJ is the most likely destination out of the three due to his wife's career path, and Buffalo and Edmonton probably being on Miller's NTC list.

Miller is a better goaltender than Niemi, so there's that.

Should be interesting to see what happens, but to me Miller heading to SJ makes the most sense. If not, oh well. We kinda predicted this would happen upon Miller's signing last off-season.

Wasn't Luo unmovable?

Honestly its just 2 more years at 6 million, a team perhaps looking to make a splash, with money to spend could make the deal. He showed that he could get wins(his GAA is high, but it isnt like the D was great in helping him) and also steal games this year, would have been top 7 in wins if he had not be injured. Also all of OTT's goalies haven't proved much. Inconsistent and are known for going on great runs to boost their stats.

29-15-1 really isn't that bad IMO. But I'd still rather trade Miller than Lack or rather neither one if it was a possibility. Miller is great, but I don't get that vibe about him like you'd get about Luongo or Schneider or Kirk for that matter so I'd be okay with him being moved. Even if the return wouldn't be that significant. I'd like to hang on to Lack and see what he can do. Two seasons are not enough to make me wan't to move him. He can still be a star and our starter for years to come if we get stuff working.

can't we trade a goalie without fans making it controversial? Lack brings the most return so he should be traded.

Because it's highly arguable that he will bring "the most return" when you factor in cap space.

If you want to trade him, but you can't because of the contract you signed him to, that means you done goofed, Benning.

Also

...but Ryan Miller, due $12 million annually over the next two seasons, is unmovable...

$12 million annually? I'm pretty sure he's not the highest paid player in the NHL.

The salary and term excuse is a poor one, considering we just dumped Luongo.

I'm not entirely sold on Lack anyway, and the 'fan love' for him is overstated. All we can do is wish him well on his new team if indeed he's traded.

I'm tired of easily avoidable goaltender controversies. Benning made this.

BUT... I can still see the positives of keeping Miller.

Clarkson, Horton, Luongo, Garrison...

Nobody is untradeable or unmoveable. Just need to be prepared for variations of value on the return. Remember -- Miller was a FREE asset, same as Vrbata and Lack. In the new cap era, sometimes you get good assets for nothing, other times you must necessarily dispose of decent assets for "nothing" (as perceived by people such as those who still cannot understand the Garrison move).

Benning and StevieY are two guys who know how it works.

Miller was better than Lack season, facts are facts. He's the better goalie overall, no question. Bye bye Stork!

Their individual stats say otherwise. Factor in their age and respective cap hits and it's no comparison, Lack is a keeper and Miller should be sent packing.
