stuman491
Is this a crazy idea? I'm all for trading away aging talent, but think it is a terrible idea to trade any picks or prospects. Sure it would be great to pick in the top 5, but honestly wouldn't it be better to draft smart and see more players like Cassels, Gaunce, Shinkaruk and Vertannen develop into everyday Canucks? Detriot has figured out a way to do it, so it must be possible. I would love to see us take a patient approach.
Monteeun
Canucks don't need to do anything desperate. We got a competitive team and some nice prospects. The draft isn't necessary some alternate form of competition we need to win.

Dutch_Canuck
Not a crazy idea at all, I like where the Canucks are headed. I think its very counter productive for our team to trade away multiple assets for a a high draft pick. If we were to do so, that would commit us to a full rebuild. I believe that's why we see so many proposals and discussions about it, a lot of fans on CDC were pro-rebuild and when Linden and Co. decided against it, it left a lot of fans preaching rebuild. I believe we are in a solid position right now, we have a competitive team, with multiple prospects in the works. Benning has done a good job of filling our missing gap of prospects during our minimal drafting years (2009-2012). I believe that he will die down on the trading picks front and start to accumulate his own choices. Benning knows a re-tool can be risky as it could leave you in limbo with not being good enough but also not being bad enough for a top choice. He is going to play it very safe, and wait as long as he feels is right to play his cards. IMO we have a gem in our system, just don't who it is yet. There is a large abundance of choices for us at 23 to fill a hole we have (defense), so i see absolutely no need to risk losing someone in order to trade up. 48MPHSlapShot
Damnit! You're not supposed to make sense when coming up with these proposals! First, you're supposed to propose a tank without actually using the word "tank". Then, you're supposed to trade McCann. That, my friend, is how you make a CDC proposal. SaintPatrick33
Yea i agree with staying the course. I mean we could trade away maybe one or two of our older players, but like you guys say, we have to stay competitive and also think of what the returns may be. I believe after next year there are a bunch of expiring contracts, that is when Benning will really put his stamp on this team. Keep the core vets around for another year, add a few young guys this season.
SaintPatrick33
That second line centre spot is Horvat's. Bonino can have third line duties. No doubt. Horvat is our best faceoff man, and his line was often the most dangerous. We cant keep giving Bonino important draws when he cant skate or win a faceoff. Third or Fourth line at best. manroth19
Everyone wants change and to dump our vets for picks prospects but the reality is our prospects we have aren't ready to step in. With how weak the free agents are this year and how strong it most likely will be next year i can easily see one or two vets going this year for cap reasons alone and deadline/next off-season where we move our vets. Better free agents and another year for the young guys to mature in the minors is most likely jbs plan
Crabcakes
It's not really maintaining a status quo because it involves adding 2-4 young players every year and is precisely what Benning is doing. It seems slow but it's not really. The only trades will be to maintain competitiveness (to facilitate player development) and to replace draft picks. We need the vets around to mentor the young talent. And we will definitely get more at the deadline for 1 or 2 of our expiring contracts.

D. SEDIN - H. SEDIN - BURROWS BAERTSCHI - BONINO - VRBATA HIGGINS - HORVAT - HANSEN KENINS - GAUNCE - DORSETT I like. However, if the Canucks are going to go status quo on forwards, they will need to overhaul the defense, perhaps "on the fly" as it may. EDLER - TAVEV BIEKSA - SBISA HAMHUIS - WEBER Stanton - Clendening Pedan - Corrado Tramkin -Subban ..... nothing much after That defense is not going to make it in this league. Since Mr. Edler doesn't want to move form Vancouver and frankly, he's decent enough to warrant his NTC and he's had a great year to justify it. After that, let the bidders bid. Anything. The Canucks sorely need a flying T1D, maybe two, that makes EDLER - TANEV a second unit pairing. They can get that now by signing two of them. EDLER - EHRHOFF GONCHAR - TANEV STANTON - CLENDENING As far a goaltending goes, the Canucks are so rich they have to let one go every two years to another team so they can play full-time. Perferably a high contract one to make shed some cap room on top of the roster spot. I love em both but vrbata or burrows has got to go.
