A [Proposal] to trade Bieksa

Recommended Posts

So now that Bieksa has said he wants a contract extension before waiving is NTC I suggest a 2 year contract extension worth $3.5 million in the first year and $2.5 million in the second year. Then trade him to Carolina or Pittsburgh for their second round pick. Carolina's is 35 but they had a bad year so they're more desperate for the backend help. :)

Can't give an extension until July 1st. Draft is in a June 26th.

Unless you want a 2016 pick

Just more proof at how absurd the 'source' was as reported earlier here on CDC. That thread has been locked now by the way, so I wouldn't suggest anyone rush to create more sign and trade proposals for Bieksa.

Nobody is giving up a 2nd for Bieksa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! especially not 35th OA

The guy can't skate, he can't shoot, he plays a beer league style all he does is bully guys in front of the net.

But he scored our conference clinching goal just a couple seasons ago. Guy is dynamite...

Teams would give up a 2nd for him, especially a team that's close to the Cup and wants some gritty guy on the back-end.

I wouldn't be surprised if a team like LA or Anaheim, or even Chicago went hard for him. They could all use him as a 3rd pairing defenceman and he'd be suited best in the West.

Why would Chicago go hard for a $4.6 million defenceman with their current cap situation?

The rumour was started on twitter by Andy Strickland who is a St Louis talk radio host.

It says that Bieksa would waive his no trade if he got a contract extension.

If he were extended, it would have to be in the final year of his present contract which is after July 1 which is after the draft so no picks this year in return but cap relief.

This implies that Bieksa thinks that he has still got game and he wants to continue playing after his present contract expires. So he can go and play elsewhere and doesn't have to worry about negotiating a contract with a GM who he doesn't know and he has the option to play up to the conclusion of the extension. I think it's a great idea because it gives him a lot of control over the remainder of his career. He could of course retire when ever he wanted. And if traded, the Canucks would get some sort of an asset back.

The other scenario would be for Bieksa to just ride out his present contract. What happens then? Retirement? Try out for another team? I can't see that happening. Would the Canucks re-sign him? He brings some grit but there is plenty of pressure coming from younger players.

So if Bieksa wants to keep playing after his contract expires, this gives the Canucks a reason to extend. It makes sense but there is nothing to back up the rumour.

I agree with the part of the implication that he wants to continue after his present contract expires.

I don't know that the implication that he thinks he still has got game necessarily follows. He could just think

( a ) that it improves his chances of getting a good price for his future services to tie the extension to any agreement to waive his ntc, or

( b ) that it isn't worth his moving if it only for a year so he wants to make sure if he's going it is to a team that is willing to make a commitment to him for more than a year

to give just a couple possibilities.

Good points, I agree with (B), in that he wants to know where he is going rather than be a rental at this stage of his career, hence the desire to guarantee an extension. By all accounts, he seems quite invested as a canuck.

Im hoping he regains his 2011 form where he would rush the puck up the ice and make good pinches, sadly though this is not a good wager. I think out of all our 30+ old guys, Juice has the best type of leadership, sad to see his play drop off that much though :(

Pittsburgh's letting Ehrhoff and Martin walk, and St. Louis is letting Jackman walk. I wonder if either team would be willing to trade for Bieksa? Surely they'd love that sort of toughness from the back end, especially Pittsburgh who have a very young, frail defence.

TO PIT: Kevin Bieksa

TO VAN: 3rd round pick

or...

TO PIT: Bieksa + 4th round pick

TO VAN: 2nd round pick
