Kassassin213
I apologize. I don't know where to post this question. If we sign someone to a year contract on July 1 when can we start negotiations on an extension? Example: we sign Franson to a 1 year 3 million dollar deal on July 1st can we sign him to a 7 year extension on the 2nd? Thanks
Quantum
Theoretically, anything is possible. Logically speaking, no... just no.
Edlerberry
Theoretically, anything is possible. Logically speaking, no... just no. You cannot begin negotiations until 1 year remaining on the current contract. Logically speaking, OP's theoretical situation is possible.. But just because that is the case doesnt mean ANYTHING is possible. For example, In practice, I don't think it's ever been done.
n00bxQb
Technically, yes, you could do that, but the league would frown heavily on it as it's not "in the spirit of the rule." Also, I highly doubt any sought-after free agent or his agent would sign off on that. If you have a $30M contract on the table and a $3M contract on the table, you take the $30M. Franson could suffer a career-ending injury the next day, you just never know.
elvis15
In the Around the NHL sub-forum: General Hockey Questions But to sign a new deal, teams have to wait until the final year of the current deal. I think 1 year deals mean they have to wait until half way through the year, but that could be wrong. More importantly though, why would Franson sign a 1 year deal (let alone for $3M) only to re-up for a 7 year deal a day later? Why not just ask for the 7 year deal right away? Kassassin213
Thanks for the replies. The 1 year 4 million is not enough to sign Franson but is a very nice camp hit for us this year. The next day we could sign him to a 7 year extension around 35 million with a signing bonus of 3 million. He would actually get 6 million this year. Everybody wins. VanGnome
I barely want Franson on a 3 year term, let alone 8 years in total. No more terrible long term signings, thanks. Benning got lucky with Vrbata, but generally speaking, UFA signings rarely if ever pan out as you hope them to. Parise/Suter while good, are nowhere near providing what their cap hits suggest they should be. Players salaries have gotten comical in UFA, and especially their self perceived values are just as comical, and it's sad that teams are buckling and giving in to those demands, or in some cases setting those demands by handing them outrageous contract offers/RFA offer sheets (Weber). No single player who's intention is to sign with the highest bidder can ever make as much or more impact than a prospect drafted, signed and developed by the organization who ultimately cares about the team they were drafted by. GM's need to place more focus on the players they draft, and take care of them. Don't treat them like commodities, but instead like valuable members of the organization that they are, and the results through development will pay dividends. You get to pick 6 new players every year, if you develop the pipeline well enough, you will establish a succession of high skilled/role players for the NHL roster and should rarely if ever have to dip into free-agency. Obviously not all prospects pan out, but it's certainly a better organizational model than over paying for single individuals who's heart probably isn't fully into where they signed. Kassassin213
I agree that growing your own is the best option but I also think that Hamhuis, Burrows and Tanev have worked out pretty good for us.
