Re-Signing Torrey Mitchell

Recommended Posts

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/canadiens-sign-torrey-mitchell-to-three-year-deal/ The Montreal Canadiens have signed Torrey Mitchell to a three-year contract, the team announced Monday. Canadiens Montréal (@CanadiensMTL) June 15, 2015 His new contract comes with a $1.2 million cap hit, which is down from $1.9 million on his last deal. Mitchell, a pending UFA, was a trade deadline acquisition for the team. The Canadiens sent Jack Nevins and a 2016 seventh round pick to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for the 30-year-old centreman. Torrey is a versatile player who has a great deal of speed and experience, said general manager Marc Bergevin in the teams press release. He was an excellent addition to our group of forwards last season, and offered a solid performance during the playoffs. Torrey had one point (an assist) in 14 regular season games with the Canadiens, and one goal and four assists in the teams 12-game playoff run. The news comes shortly after the Canadiens locked down defencemen Nathan Beaulieu and Jeff Petry, and amid speculation about what action the cap-strapped team will take in order to up its offensive power. Not a bad depth player at all and for $1.2 million its a pretty good deal and a local boy as well

Yeah, not bad for a depth role player.

Poor guy though, I mean to go from 1C on the Sabres down to depth role in Montreal.... lol, but only on Nolan for that one. Good for Mitchell to find a home for a while.

Bit of an overpayment, was ballparking between $1.1-$1.15 mill per based off of his decline but not too big of a deal considering the ridiculousness of some recent signings...

How is that an overpayment? Torrey Mitchell plays essentially the same role Brad Richardson played for us. And seriously $50,000 difference is what makes it a good deal and overpayment?

That is actually a great deal now a days for a fourth line centre who can easily play up the lineup.

Well thank you, except for the troll part, pretty sure I'm not one based on the site's description of what one is...

I can't believe some people think that this is a minor signing. Mitchell is a veteran of 529 games (regular+playoffs) with 122 points. He's played for four different teams and has re-signed with one of the favourites for the Cup next season. Throw in $3.6m and this is not a minor signing - it's a good one, an important one for the Habs, and one that many teams will be jealous of when they're overpaying in free agency.

Mitchell is a swell character guy, for sure.

But when a team signs a 30 year old career grinder who has, over 7 full NHL seasons, only twice reached 20 points (the last time 5 years ago) and only once hit 10 goals (7 years ago), I think it's reasonable to conclude the team is signing a swell character guy for a depth role. And when a team signs a swell character guy for a depth role, well, maybe some people consider it to be a minor signing.

We're talking about a career grinder who has 1 power power goal to account for 457 regular season games over 7 seasons. So, sure, a good minor signing, but still a minor signing.

If thats the criteria for a minor signing then 3/4 of all signings should be in that thread. Like if Brad Richardson or Shawn Matthias re-sign, yawn, minor signing.

If Richardson played on any other team, if would be a minor signing.

I was thinking $1,199,999 would be fair. 1.2mil is a HUGE overpayment!

Disagree. Or are Cups won with just 6 forwards, 2 D and a goalie?

Timo wasn't a signing.

you get the idea. Its snobbery of the highest orser to call this a minor signing and disrespectful to a guy who has more than 500 games under his belt.
