To win a cup you need at least two superstars

Excellent point but they did not have the Sedins to work with. We have them for at least 4 more years. Those Nashville teams were a team full of 3rd liners at forward, kind of like how we are except the Sedins. Also I think trotz had them playing trap style hockey, what a waste of that blueline. I think if we get even one of those type of D-men added to our squad it will make a world of difference.

To win a cup you need a few key members.

To start you need an elite goalie.

Throw in an QB D and a second that can eat minutes.

Top off with a Selke 1C and a true sniper.

Finally you need a supporting cast that not only buys in, but truly believes.

Chicago adjusts to every team, and plays the same way whether 3-0 or 0-3.

Edler is good but not a QB. (That was Ehrhoff) Hamhuis is our stay-at-homer.

Kes was our Selke and Daniel was (temporarily) our sniper.

Supporting cast was just ok. Some are overpaid.

Was Lu elite? Maybe that one year we all were. But a few of those guys were having career years. If you can't repeat that for 2-3, you only get one shot. We fell short.

The recipe for a winning team requires a mixture of different parts skill, physicality, speed, puck-moving, play-making, crease-clearing, puck-stopping, goal-scoring, free agent-signing, trading and prospect drafting and developing. Of course guys like the high-scoring #1 center, minute-munching defender, puck-moving defender, top level sniper and solid goalie are important, but other parts (e.g. #2 defensive center, hard-shooting/ puck-moving/ physical depth-defenders, speedy/ physical/ sharp-shooting/ face-off specialist forwards, plus rookie breakout players on cheap contracts, decent backup goalie) are also important parts.

Remember too that every year two teams get to play in the Finals but only one wins.

Most importantly, Tampa had everything you mentioned for a winner (Bishop, Stralman, Hedman, Palat/ Callahan, Stamkos, in that order plus their young stars, grinders and assorted puck-movers and physical D-men, plus Vasilievski) but you can't always expect to win.

Great teams make their own luck.

If Chicago plays keepaway all game long, then the opportunity for injuries diminishes.

Bowman and his disciples have dominated hockey for eons now. All luck? Pffft... Hardly.

And surprise, surprise, he does it without advanced stats. How is that possible!!!?!??!

However Tampa does have the advantage of youth, depth, and now experience. They have all the tools to be a cup contender for years. And Drouin is just getting his feet wet.

Many people talk about the "seven player" model for success: two dominating centers, a power forward, a sniper, a PMD, a D that stays at home and clears the crease, and a good goalie. As you can see, we have a lot more holes to fill than in 2011 to acheive this template.

Horvat showed in his limited playoff experience to be a playoff performer. Remember, it's not like Toews gets 70 point regular seasons, but he plays well in both ends and really shows up in the playoffs. As for Kane, it's not like LA or Boston had a player like that. If you can have one winger who can get a lot of points in the playoffs though, you'll probably be fine. Could be Virtanen, could be another draft pick, really depends. The D-Man like Keith or Doughty is what you really need.
