[Rumour] Blues open to moving Backes, Oshie, Berglund

Recommended Posts

I don't think he's actually suggesting that at all, he just believes that's what it would cost.

... and he is probably pretty on the money with how much a team will be willing to part with in order to get Backes. People will see what Anaheim did with adding Kesler (a good comparable player) and want to follow that strategy. They didn't win a Cup, but it made them a significantly better team by adding that element to the 2nd line.

We wouldn't be in that ballpark for what we could or would offer.

Something more like:

To STL:

Bonino

Higgins

Kassian or Gaunce

To VAN:

Berglund

2nd or 3rd round pick

Lindbohm

The Kings are going hard for Oshie. You can book it. If they won most of their shootouts last season, they would have been in and made life a living hell for all involved in the playoffs. If they take Oshie, he will fit into their system like a glove and he can help them win their shootouts.

Backes is the only one worth having but he is getting on and with a year on his contract, that would have to be reflected in the asking price. We should have more cap at the end of next year.

Oshie is in his prime but his prime doesn't come up to Backes imo. He would be good for shoot outs though.

Fundamentally they both seem to disappear in the playoffs, hence I suspect why SL are now willing to trade.

Get Berglund and move Bonino. If St. Louis wants to move veterans and get other veterans in return (presumably because they have the same issue of the same stale core of guys like we do).... then Bonino going the other way works for them. He is much cheaper of the two.

They are also in the mix for a goalie, so it is not impossible to have a deal that ends up with a few pieces going either way. They have the opposite strengths in their prospects pool than us. We could use one of their defensive prospects, they could use one of our centres.

The problem I see with that is I don't think we saw half of what Bonino can do for this team. Something happened to cause him to drop off and I think we might regret trading him. He is just coming into his prime.

He better learn to do faceoffs

I would love to see Backes in a Canucks Jersey.

I think he and Kassian would work great together and, maybe, Backes might be able to bring the aggression back in Kassian's game.

Now that I think of it, why not try to pry Lucic out of Boston. I don't know how that would break down, but a line of Lucic, Backes and Kassian would be epic. A line that would destroy everything in it's path. LOL. The modern day Legion of doom.

These would be moves for a, "now," scenario, so I would be willing to move some future for them. the way I see it, Vancouver management is always talking about a future that never arrives. It's been that way for 45 yrs now and we are still cupless.

I see a line like this giving us, at least 5 yrs of productive service, giving us time to restock the cupboards and may well become one of the most beloved lines in Canucks history.

D.Sedin H.Sedin R.Vrbata

M.Lucic D.Backes Z.Kassian

S.Matthias N.Bonino A.Burrows

D.Dorsett B.Horvat A.Grenier

A.Edler C.Tanev

D.Hamhuis Y.Weber

F.Corrado/A.Pedan L.Sbisa

Bonino + lack for Oshie + Blues 2nd round pick.

Works for both teams and is pretty fair imo.

Lol that's not fair at all. Lack will go for a 2nd rounder so your basically trading oshie for bonino. I dunno how people.come.up with some of their proposals.

I like how people are like why would they trade them they should be competing for a cup blah blah. This core has shown they can't compete for a cup and instead of trying over and over again with the same results trade your stars for new stars and you will have a better team longer. This is how a team should be run unless you've a core like Chicago.

Yes, there were rumours about him playing injured after his hot start. Even if they're not true, it would be foolish not to give him at least another season to see what he can do. At his cap hit we can afford to be patient.

Apples for Apples:

Berglund © - age 27. 6' 3" 217 lbs

77 gp 12 g 15 a = 27 pts (0.35 ppg)

Kassian (rw) - age 24. 6' 3" 214 lbs.

42 gp 10 g 6 a = 16 pts (0.38 ppg)

Almost identical, except Kassian is 3 years younger and more physical. Maybe if STL would throw something else in, like a 3rd or 4th?

They have three very intriguing Finnish defencemen and an AHL team with enough other bodies playing in that position that it is tough to spread around enough minutes for development. They have virtually no prospect depth at centre.

There is an excellent opportunity to swap prospects that even out a trade and work for both team.
