[Proposal] Bieksa for Berglund

Recommended Posts

To St.Louis: Kevin Bieksa

To Vancouver: Patrick Berglund, 5th round pick

Pretty simple trade:

Berglund is overpaid for a 30 point producer, but might be a player who needs a change of scenery and is young enough that he'd still be in his prime after a 2-3 year retool going on over here. Can play LW/C. Same age as Matthias, bigger upside. Has put up 50+ points before, good size, Canucks have some good Swedish mentors.

St.Louis is losing Jackman and is desperate to bring "edge" to their game so they can stop floundering in the playoffs. Bieksa's toughness and leadership abilities are right up Hitchcock's alley. Though he's never won a cup, he's played a key role in a SCF appearance. Can anyone even remember the last time the Blues made it past the 2nd round?

Thoughts?

St. Louis does not need dmen, least of there worries. They have a top 4 of Shattenkirk/JayBo/Pietrengalo/Michalek. They are stacked on D. Why would they want a 34 year old Bieksa for Berglund? If they are trading Berglund it will be for a shakeup up front or picks/prospects or there bigger need which is goaltending. So the better proposal might be:

Lack and Jensen for Berglund???

Michalek is UFA. With Gunarsson, they have 4 top-6 defensemen.

Think it's realistic, we'd get an underachieving player with potential for more for an older guy, so we probably can't ask for much more. As much as I'd hate to admit it, getting another tweener in Berglund could be as good as it gets given how Juice has played below expectations. We'd have another middle 9 guy but will have to look elsewhere (e.g. draft/ another trade) to land a star in return. (Just hope Juice doesn't rebound in his contract season like he's done before).

Why get Berglund when we have a carbon copy of him in Matthias? Might as well just re-sign Matthias...If we're re-signing Richardson then there's no point anyway. Henrik is still good for 1C, Bonino will be a pretty average 2C, Horvat will fight for 2nd line minutes but for the most part will remain our 3rd line center which leaves about 10-12 minutes a night to Richardson as the 4th center. No room for Berglund on the wing.

I'd like to do a Bieksa + Higgins somewhere for a 2nd round pick though, or Bieksa for a 3rd? Either Pittsburgh/Detroit/somewhere out East/St. Louis would fit nicely.

Some fair points, but Matthias doesn't really match up with Berglund. Consider this: Matthias' best NHL season is pretty much the same as Berglund's worst.

Having Bonino, Berglund and Horvat competing for 2nd line minutes is certainly not going to hurt the team. Berglund can also play the big winger role - with decent speed and nice hands.

Berglund isn't a soft player either: he had 16 hits in 6 playoff games this year, more than any Canuck against Calgary except Dorsett.

Berglund - Horvat - Kassian/Baertschi/Vrbata/etc would have potential for Berglund to turn it around.

And also important to remember Berglund's offence dropped back down basically the moment Hitchcock became coach. Payne is closer to a WDJ than a Hitchcock. In a new environment, in a different role, and competiting for ice-time it isn't unlikely that Berglund could re-find his 50+ point form.

Just what we need, another soft player in the playoffs, and taking away whatever toughness we have left in Juice.

There aren't many videos of him hitting but if he can use that toughness and ability to fend guys off with his size we'd at least have a solid offensive player who can hit and who'd be a top-9 guy at worst.

That sentence contradicts itself and your point. Double whammy!
