[Speculation] Friedman on Ryan O'Reilly: "They're hoping to sign him but...they likely can't"

Recommended Posts

Colorado Avalanche forward Ryan O’Reilly is expected to be one of the hottest names heading into draft weekend.

"They're hoping to sign him but they might not be able to and they likely can't," Friedman said on Sportsnet 590 The Fan. "So they're listening hard and the (Toronto) Maple Leafs would likely be interested.”

Friedman: Well, yesterday on the conference call – Like, I had heard they wanted a left-shot defenseman. If you look at them, Erik Johnson is a rightie shot and Tyson Barrie is a rightie shot. So I had heard they were looking for a left-hand shot D to play with those guys. And then somebody disputed that and said it’s not 100 percent the key.

"We like Ryan a lot; he's very valuable, he's one of our core guys," Sakic said. "He doesn't need it, we don't need it, no one needs the distractions of him going through the season (as a pending unrestricted free agent), so we're going to try to get it done."

If given the chance, you have to wonder if Colorado would just take Calgary's first and third round pick from that offer sheet and run.

Either he REALLY doesn't like Colorado, or he is way too full of himself

Or he would rather explore different options....

Since when does one player who wants some freedom in where he wants to work mean he is full of himself?

Or he's an incredibly good player and wants to explore his options. He plays hard, puts up a fair amount of points, very responsible defensively, and rarely gets a penalty.

So don't get offended when Bo Horvat only signs one year deals until he becomes a UFA.

Speculating much.

I like our version of ROR better. Bo Horvat. He probably won't even up being one of the greediest players in hockey like ROR.

I think somebody started an Edler for ROR rumour. I'm not sure if Benning wants to break up the Edler-Tanev pairing just yet. But if he does pull this off, then he's trading our cheaper #1d (#1d for us anyway) for a more expensive #2c UFA, and we have little LHD, but plently of #2c's.

I don't mind ROR as a player, but he's way overpriced, and he'll probably have to go to a team who's looking for overpaid centers more than we are.

I've said it before. ROR is one of those players that will be good now, but will break down and wear out in a couple years and maybe someone in his camp might have picked this up. He needs to get as much money he can right now, so he's gonna do that. He's insanely slow, non physical player. I can't see him in the league very long. His effort is keeping him in it, but i doubt he'll stay. Right now, he's fortunate to be playing with very good players to cover his glaring weaknesses. Once he's on his own, and if he signs onto a team that expects him to hold a line on his own, it's going to spell trouble.

Speaking of re-signing, how much money you think Hudler is going to demand now that he's apparently one of the league's top scorers? (What?)

$7mil per? 8?

Giordano, Mr. Norris, is going to demand a similar payment.

Eric Staal is kicking around.

Seabrook.

Brian Campbell.

Plekanec.

Voracek.

Backes.

Ladd & Buff

Stamkos.

Kopitar.

Bieksa & Hamhuis.

I think Stammer is on his way out next year, Toronto I bet!

Hudler won't get much more, he's 31 or 32, Gio will take a bit of a raise, but check out Calgarys cap space, I think it's among the most in the league, not really an issue for the next few years,

Seabrook likely takes a discount to stay in Chicago and try to bang out another cup, cementing their legacy,

Ladd and Buff likely know that Winnipeg is going to be an absolute force in a few years and probably wanna stick around for that, again lots of cap space in Winnipeg too.

what could have been. The hilarious part was Calgary would have been forced to give up the picks, and then O'Reilly would have hit waivers, only to be quickly snagged by CBJ.

Toronto have Nylander and Kadri already at center, and should probably draft Strome at 4th. If Strome is gone at 3rd for whatever reason by Arizona, Toronto really shouldn't go for another small skilled guy like Marner but should draft Hanifin and make a big play for ROR.

They could throw Colorado one of their later picks + a top-4 defenceman + decent forward prospect for O'Reilly.

O'Reilly and Landeskog for Kessel and Rielly and Toronto's second 1st?

WTF is this? We're not trading Landy and we don't want Kessel. Makes no sense for the Leafs to trade Rielly either.

That pick turned into Monahan so it really shouldn't even be a question.

I was kidding - massive trades like these hardly ever happen. Although, Landeskog would look good in blue and white
