VAN-COL VAN-NYI

Recommended Posts

My first post...here it goes.

Rarely do I agree with Pratt, and his rambling non-sense, but he did propose a rather intriguing trade... Here is my take on it.

To Van:

Ryan O'Reilly

3rd round Pick (2015)

To Col:

Alex Edler

Nick Bonino

4th round Pick (2015)

Although the loss of Edler would hurt, this may be that opportunity to acquire that quality top six centre to complement Horvat moving forward. Bonino has upside, and is a more realistic 3rd line centre in the Av's depth chart. Now people will complain that in this trade, I am suggesting that Bonino and a 4th is equal in value to a 3rd. I believe that shipping him out will free up that needed roster spot (which ROR will fill anyways), and shed his 2 mill cap hit. So yes, its worth it. Chances are he will hit the UFA market at the end of his current contract anyways. Its a no brainer, the Av's will want Edler.

To Van:

3rd round pick (2015), 82nd pick

To NYI:

Chris Higgins

5th round pick (2015)

With the Islanders most likely going to lose Kyle Okposo, this may be a quick fix for a team looking to bring in a quality bottom six forward, that could move to the second line if needed.

It also looks like Bieksa, and Lack will be on the move. The loss of Edler, Bonino, Bieksa, Lack and Higgins results in about 9 mill of freed up cap. That 9 mill can be used in free agency to acquire a serviceable defensemen, i.e.: Franson, Jackman, etc. while leaving enough to tender RFA's and resign Richardson.

Lineup:

Sedin-Sedin-Burrows

Baertschi-O'Reilly-Vrbata

Kassian-Horvat-Hansen

Kenins-Richardson-Dorsett

Vey

Hamhuis-Tanev

Franson/Jackman-Sbisa

Weber-Clenndening/Corrado

Miller

Markstrom

The back end is weak, but lets be honest, we are a transitioning club and this lineup is manageable. What are everyones thoughts?

i can tell this is your first post... nice try though.. in case you haven't noticed lack is most likely traded ...

I know... I obviously acknowledged that... hence why his cap was included in the "freed up" cap space. I realized I accidentally included him in the revised lineup, This has since been changed.

I agree, the D is not exactly pretty. I think that Sbisa would benefit from playing with a veteran like Barrett Jackman. I think he would be a good signing. The best thing with Jackman, is that he is gritty, and that is exactly what our backend needs.

If Jackman is just what our backend needs cause he is gritty then why not just keep Bieksa?

I don't see how shedding 2.5mill of cap space, and an aging stale player, in return for a 3rd pick in a deep draft is considered "getting hosed."

First off Higgins has a NTC and doesn't want to play in NY. He is not an aging stale player, he brings a lot defensively on a damn good contract. So yah a 3rd is getting hosed.

But even more so I was referring to your 1st god awful trade. You think Top-2 Dmen like Edler grow on trees? O'Reily is not a position we are lacking in D is. So why in the hell would we trade from a weak position for something we are strong in?

Nice try but put some actual thought in your proposals and tag in your Title next time.

Because we can shed Bieksa's cap hit, and acquire an equal player at prob a lesser rate. In addition, a Bieksa grade gets us another pick.

As for the first trade. I hear where you are coming from. But I don't think we are that strong at centre. At 24, ROR projects to be a potential 1st line centre. He also falls into that age grouping that we desperately tried to fill with the Vey trade last year. I just don't have confidence in Bonino at this point. and Edler as a top pairing defensemen is a bit of a stretch. He may be on the Canucks, but that doesn't say much. You are also assuming that Edler doesn't regress again, like his season under Torts. Players like Ryan O'Reilly don't grow on trees, so the same case can be made from my perspective.

I'll be sure to put a tag in the title next time. My bad.

No, I think we're not in a place to trade a left-handed, top-4 D-man, esp. not Edler, who's our best young-ish offensive D-man option. With Hammer on the top-line we'd go back to having a shutdown top pairing which can barely generate offense, and Jackman's kind of old and would just make our back-end top-4 all defenders. Franson would be a better option, but he would only replace Edler's offense without ADDING offense, which we need to do. That bottom pairing does have offensive potential, but we'd better hope for the kids to step up, and I'd shuffle the pairings around to get more offensive-defensive balance.

Still, even with the shuffling around (using the roles they've had as reference)

Hammer - Franson (not bad)
Sbisa - Tanev (don't think either of them would score above 20 points... we'd be only solid on D)
Jackman - Weber
(not bad for a bottom pairing, Weber can score but is he top-4 ready? Also Barret might be $$$)

Clendening
(don't think he'd beat Tanev for a spot but we need offense, and all the left-side guys are defensive)

we should get more offensive in our top-4, not slow, old and defensive.

Hamhuis-Tanev

Franson/Jackman-Sbisa

Weber-Clenndening/Corrado

Why is that intriguing?

Edler is signed for years, ROR is not. Waste of an asset who appears headed to screwing over COL to get the biggest buck. Any reason he wouldn't do the same to us?

He is in an unfortunate position where he is buried behind Duchene and MacKinnon. He is trying to get fair market value for his skill set, while Colorado is trying to use their depth and his spot in that depth to negotiate. He knows his value, and I think if he were to be on any other team, he could put up 60-80 points. Which should be rewarded between 6-8 mill per year based on league comps.
