The Supreme Court ruled Friday that same-sex couples have a right to marry nationwide, in a historic decision that invalidates gay marriage bans in more than a dozen states.

Gay and lesbian couples already can marry in 36 states and the District of Columbia. But in a 5-4 ruling, the court held that the 14th Amendment requires states to issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples and to recognize such marriages performed in other states.

The ruling means the remaining 14 states that did not allow such unions, in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans.

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority opinion, just as he did in the court's previous three major gay rights cases dating back to 1996.

"No union is more profound than marriage," Kennedy wrote, joined by the court's four more liberal justices. He continued: "Under the Constitution, same-sex couples seek in marriage the same legal treatment as opposite-sex couples, and it would disparage their choices and diminish their personhood to deny them this right."

The outcome is the culmination of two decades of Supreme Court litigation over marriage, and gay rights generally. Cheers broke out outside the Supreme Court when the decision was announced.

It's about effing time.

I'm just glad its done with so I can stop hearing about all this non-sense.

Maybe if people would stop shoving this crap down our throats there wouldn't be so much frustration/hate towards the LGBTYXOSHG community.

Yeah, how dare those gays want equal treatment!

As a Christian, I strongly disagree with this.

Do you also strongly disagree with sex outside of marriage? That's infinitely more condemned in the bible yet Christians who follow that teaching seem to be few and far between especially compared to the number against same sex marriage.

I have zero problem with them wanting equal treatment, in fact I support it (even as a Christian). They should have the right to do it even if Christians disagree with it.

I just don't want to hear about it every day of my life. Facebook is overrun with pride parades/Bruce (or caitlyn) Jenner and other stuff I don't need crammed down my throat.

Having an opinion? If people can support gay rights, why can't they be against them?

That's not how the world works.

People who hold an opinion contrary to the popular opinion will always be easy targets for hate. 20 years ago people hated homosexuals and now they hate the people who hate homosexuals.

The world moves on, if you care what other people think of you and your opinions then you're in for a sad day.

As long as you understand that opinion will wind up being lambasted.

I have no problem with you opposing it.

They can, but their gonna get hated on themselves for being an insufferable bigot with a narrow mind.

Actually, flaming people is less tolerable than disagreeing with gay marriage.

As a human being I say, glad people can finally be able to marry the person they love.

This..

This x100..

Although IMO I don't support the transexual movement because its a untreated mental disorder.. and I am serious when I say that.

This again...

This is what it's all about.

This however is disgusting and an example of what's wrong with this world, just saying......

By saying that you're being no different than the religious zealots..

As an atheist I strongly disagree with your ideology.

See how that doesn't matter? Neither does your petty perspective. Take that dildo out of your ass and get over it.

Exactly who gives a frack what atheists, religious zealots, etc.. say about you.

You live your own life.

But people are still entitled to voice their opinions.

You can hate peoples choices- being gay. You can't hate them for something they're born with- Down Syndrome. Since according to the bible being Gay is a choice, we can disagree with them. Now a Christian should not hate a gay for being gay, however hate the fact they chose to be gay.

You disagree with people outside of your religion making their own choices?

Also,

Separation of church and state. They are two completely different entities that do not and should not rule eachother.
