[Report] Dougie Hamilton was offered 6 years, 33M before he was traded to Flames

And.... Subban, Karlsson, and Kieth already won it. Doughty and Weber have also been nominated as a Norris finalist.

Doughty is 25 and is regarded as one of the best D's in the league. I would pick Doughty over Giordano any day of the week.

And I wouldn't spend a moment thinking before taking Giordano over him.

If you look closer at the complete player - it's a no brainer.

You'd put Gio over Doughty?

Yes, easily.

Lol what. You take out #1 or 2 in the world in doughty for gio? Lol as if.

If you consider Doughty 1 or 2 in the world, I suggest you pass the koolaid with your lols.

Will be back to explain why Giordano is better when I have time.

Past two seasons:

Doughty: 83 pts in 160 games over the past 2 seasons - 1.13 pp 60 minutes. (+21)

Giordano: 95 pts in 125 games over the past 2 seasons - 1.82 pp 60. (+25)

Doughty: 28 takeaways, 161 giveaways

Giordano: 74 takeaways, 94 giveways.

Doughty: 52.(% and 54.9% offensive zone starts.

Giordano: 43.1% and 44.1% offensive zone starts.

Doughty: 4.9 and 3.0 relative corsi.

Giordano: 13.9 and 22.8 relative corsi

Doughty: -0.143 and -0.172 quality of competition.

Giordano: +1.908 and +1.913 qoc

To summarize -

1) Giordano is more productive offensively

2) Giordano plays harder minutes, facing the strongest quality of competition on his team and was 23rd and 29th on his team in offensive zone starts the past two seasons.

3) He has far more takeaways and gives the puck away far less.

4) Giordano consistently has the best puck possession numbers on his team - Doughty comes in at 10th and 12th.

Objectively - Giordano is better at both ends of the ice, and is not propped up by SC team-mates.

Subjectively - Giordano is a boss - an outstanding leader - an absolute steal for his franchise, who was undrafted and rose to become their captain. Poughty is a tantrum throwing prima donna who held out for huge money, is scared to take a hit, abandons the puck routinely under pressure, and reacts like a spoiled brat when he is tagged.

Doughty has been making 7+ million.

Giordano 4 million.

This is an absolute no-brainer for anyone who isn't a highlight reel fan or pumping hollow pedigree.

Nice to see Old news take the time to add all these numbers to the debate. I'm very high on Gio myself and pointed that out in this thread, but those numbers are even more telling.

I noticed a few of you in this thread criticized old news and questioned Gio's ability. I wonder if those underlying numbers changed any opinions.

@Forsberg

Hudler is a ufa at seasons end, in fact so is Jones and Hiller, between those 3 that's like 13 million dollars in cap space. In my opinion I think they will trade Wideman at some point this season or prior to the start of the season.

Again though I think Calgary has one of the best top 4's.

Gio, Brodie, Hamilton, Russell.

I can think of 5 other teams off the top of my head who's top 4 is better than Calgary's

looks like someone beat me to it

But this raises the question, if Hamilton basically refused the almost same offer from Boston. What's going on there? Is there some issues in the locker room? Or did he read the writing on the wall that Boston is in for a long re-build and just want to be traded?

When a player asks to be traded, this is not good times for an organization. Long history of this. I heard the Oilers had a very similar offer on the table for picks and more. Whatever the reason it is certainly to Calgary's benefit.

Calgary has a top D core now. If they sign Franson it will be arguably one of the best in the NHL.

I am glad we stayed away from that trade.

If he is everything he appears to be, no way Boston trades him.

There are rumours that he is dislike by his team-mates and problematic. Benning probably knows way more about this player than the media do, so you pretty much have to trust his sense of this.

On the other hand, if I had to be on a team with those Boston jackasses, I would probably be on the outs with them as well.

B) This is sarcasm right?

Pronger was a famous a-hole. Demanded a trade out of Edmonton. Went to the Ducks and won the Cup.

There are lots of examples of players who simply are not happy where they are at the moment, for whatever reason and then get traded only to shine on a new team...

The Hamilton trade for Calgary may be one of the best trades they ever made. They have a young top pairing D-man to anchor their team for years to come and have him on a good contract for the next 6 years...

I think it had to do with a number of things. Cap space, new gm, re-tooling, etc. Boston is not in a rebuild imo. The people overlooking them are clueless.

Your kidding me right? Doughty is a top 5 dman in the league. Has been for some years now. 2 time cup champion. Was arguably the top defenceman with team Canada.

Gio is really good. But ask 29 GM's and they'll take Doughty.

Who can argue with an unsubstantiated assertion like that?

Doughty hit 59 points in his 2nd year. Norris Trophy finalist 2x times already. Shove the advanced stats up your a**.

Seriously are you being bias cause it's LA?

Compare their HERO rating too. Gio clearly outranks Doughty in every category there too.

Giordano right now is by far a better all-round defenceman than Doughty, but Drew Doughty is one of the most clutch defenders in the modern era, up there with the likes of Keith and Seabrook. He was a playoff monster during LA's several runs to the Cup and broke a few games wide open, whereas Giordano hasn't really done much in the playoffs and was injured all of the last playoffs. It's something that doesn't get taken into consideration often enough, but Doughty's playoff performances cannot go ignored.

That being said if I were building a defence around one guy I'd want Giordano. If I already had a pretty decent defence and wanted to make that extra push in the playoffs, I'd go with Doughty.

To be fair he offered up proof for his argument while all you did was provided accomplishments from the past and spoke for 29 g.m's around the league.

Way to assume and generalize. I have no hard feelings towards L.A. I suppose I just have more hockey knowledge and or understand the game more then you do.

By the way I never knocked DD, I just indicated how good Gio was. But again you never responded with anything other then your presumed opinions of 29 other gm's.
