Patrick Kane
Michael Landsberg now interviews Time Lord! A 'rookie' GM, who has made a lot of progress so far. TimeLord is a one of the few GM's who is considered in a 'rebuild' mode, after finishing last in 2015/16. He traded the 1st overall pick + Adam Eerne for the 5th + Sam Bennett, and is currently in playoff contention due to the breakout of Yakupov, Zacha, Gelinas and consistency of Cammalleri, Zajac, Larsson and Merrill. ML: What are your thoughts on RGMG: The Sim thus far?TL: It's been an amazing experience. The perks aspect and the fact that there are no player ratings make it a unique fantasy league. The pace of the sims is quick but still very reasonable, which adds to the excitement.--ML: How do you feel about the New Jersey Devils right now?TL: I am honestly surprised about the quick turnaround. I was expecting this to be another developmental season for the team, so it's great to know that I'm building for the future while still being a competitive team that could end up making the playoffs.--ML: We all know you tried to shop Mike Cammalleri at a couple points last year. What were the potential deals?TL: Before last season had started, I had gotten a few inquiries and offers but none were exactly what I wanted. The best offer that comes to mind would be a young third line forward, a defenseman prospect, and a 2nd for Cammalleri, but I ended up turning it down since I was looking for a high end prospect as part of the deal. Turns out, it was good that I never made a trade since Cammalleri turned out to be on of the best players in the league and has been helping Zacha develop this season. He's showing no signs of slowing down regardless of his role. --ML: Is there any trade you regret making or a trade offer you had on the table that you wish you made?TL: Although the whole trade was not regrettable, I may have made a rookie mistake in the deal that sent Schneider and Severson to Edmonton in return for Yakupov, Talbot, and Musil. I knew what I was giving up in Schneider, but figured Yakupov would be more valuable in giving me my (at the time) poor forward group a better future. And that's not where I was wrong. The mistake was accepting the offer which included Severson who looks to be a good young offensive defenseman, who I undervalued at the time. Since I was trading the most valuable asset in the trade, I had leverage, but I didn't use it too well in a deal with an experienced GM. --ML: If you could add one player to your roster from any team in the NHL, who would you add?TL: Since my offense is fine but my GA per game isn't ideal for a playoff team, I would choose Alex Pietrangelo who is a proven #1 defenseman. He is very good defensively, and is having a great season with 19 points in 23 games on the Islanders. --ML: Rapid fire round (short answers), who's going to win the cup (other than yourself?):TL: Nashville, very well rounded team--ML: Noah Hanifin or Aaron Ekblad - the brighter future?TL: Ekblad--ML: Anaheim or Los Angeles, the better team?TL: Los Angeles despite their recent struggles--ML: How much $ would Mike Cammalleri get if he was a free-agent?TL: 8 million--ML: Would you trade Zacha, Merill and a 1st for the upcoming 1st overall pick? (Artem Lazarev)TL: No, I like the way Zacha is developing and Merrill is my best D-man -- ML: Best trade you've made thus far?TL: Probably the 1st overall and Erne for Bennett and the 5th overall, got quality and quantity for my top 6 in the future --ML: And finally, who is your favorite team to play?TL: The New York Rangers--ML: Thank you TL for the interview, good luck to you in the season, a very bright future.TL: Thanks homie. Patrick Kane
Michael Landsberg now interviews Not Alain Vigneault. A very experienced GM, who has turned Toronto around. Toronto was in considerably bad shape when AV took over. After making some big moves (shipping out Kessel, acquiring Giroux) and bringing in solid pieces (Myers, Hudler, Silfverberg) plus his current youth, AV looks to be a perennial playoff contending team, with the cup in sight. ML: What are your thoughts on RGMG: The Sim thus far? AV: RGMG: The Sim has been nothing but an amazing experience! After being away from Fantasy for nearly 3 years, it's great to be back at it, interacting with some old and new faces, and ultimately competing to win a Stanley Cup. I originally felt I needed to AGM for a bit because I was out of the loop for so long but I was very fortunate to have received my position when I did and I haven't looked back since. PK has dedicated a lot of time and hard-work into this and that in-turn has seen me check the thread multiple times daily, participate in tiny chats, and has kept me engaged more than ever. --ML: How do you feel about the Toronto Maple Leafs right now?AV: I feel we're going in a positive direction. We've received very stellar goaltending, we've upgraded our defence, and I feel our forward group is a bit better than when I got here. Through 20 or so games, we are in a playoff position but that's only a portion of the season, so lots of games left to be played. I feel I have added and improved our prospect cupboard as well but we'll need some more time assess that. I think by the trade deadline, I will know a bit more about how I feel towards my team but I certainly do believe we're trending upwards. --ML: What made you want to go out and acquire Claude Giroux, and what impact has he made on your roster?AV: When I traded Dion (Phaneuf), Phil (Kessel), and Tyler (Bozak), our team lost a lot of its leaders and most of the guys who represented this franchise. I wouldn't go back and undo any of those moves but I felt moving forward, I would need to acquire a "face of the franchise" type of guy to lead our team. When Claude was made available, I knew he would be that guy. He played a very important position (center), he was one of the game's elite players offensively, he was signed long-term, and was at the age where he would be entering his prime years. At the same time, he would make us better instantly and would speed up our rebuilding process. We paid a very hefty price to get him but I felt he's lived up to expectations. He took awhile to get going but ever since the second half of last season, he's produced immensely for us and has evolved into the leader we envisioned him being. Giroux alleviates the offensive pressures off of our younger centers like Strome and Nylander and will allow them to develop at their own pace without being rushed or expected to be players they aren't just yet. --ML: In your opinion, what is the best trade you have made thus far?AV: The obvious choices may be the Giroux, Kessel, or Myers deal, but I believe the Phanuef deal is my best thus far. I was able to add a defender like Russell who replaced Dion's minutes and production relatively well and subsequently sign him long-term for a lot less money. I also added players like Poirier and Andersson who are assets to this team going forward. Bozak's contract was also moved in this deal, so with all the money I saved, I was able to spend on Jiri Hudler this summer without hesitation or worry. --ML: If you could add one player to your roster from any team in the NHL, who would you add?AV: It's no secret I love Seth Jones but his team-mate, Roman Josi, locked in at just 4 million would be that guy. You could argue I'd be better off adding another top 3 or top 6 forward but tell me how many 50-60 point defenders are signed for only 4 million, with lots of term left? So definitely, Roman Josi. --ML: Rapid fire round (short answers), who's going to win the cup (other than yourself?):AV: Tampa Bay.--ML: Jack Eichel or Connor McDavid?AV: Connor McDavid --ML: New York Islanders or Washington Capitals - the better team?AV: Washington. I feel Holtby is the difference maker in a 7 game series.--ML: Who has the best contract on your team?AV: Tyler Myers. Of course, his production of late is kind of skewing this but to get a 26 year old, top 3 guy for 5.5 at 3 years seems like a coup to me, regardless. --ML: Would you trade Nylander, Russell, 1st for the upcoming 1st overall pick? (Artem Lazarev)AV: As of now, I would say no. But things change fast in this league. --ML: Do you see yourself winning the cup in the next 2 years?AV: If I can continue adding to our team and turning us in the direction I want to go, I don't see why not. --ML: And finally, who is your favorite team to play? AV: Tampa Bay. The benchmark team without a doubt. --ML: Thank you AV for the interview, good luck to you in the season, a very bright future.AV: Thanks dawg!
