Honky Cat
It is true that no-one will give up anything, even a 7th round pick, just for the right to negotiate with a mid-level UFA before free agency opens. But Matthias would have been valuable at the trade deadline. The second or maybe even first round pick they could have traded him for would have looked very good in this draft. Benning would have been ripped if he traded a depth player for picks just as the team was heading into the playoffs..
TOMapleLaughs
no it has been ONE complete season. Canucks have great prospects coming up and JB is continuing to try and draft well and transition new players into the line up. In 3-4 years THEN maybe you can complain about mediocrity, but then again 'fans' probably say the same thing about DET which makes no sense. Can we stahp calling ourselves Detroit one of these years? WHL rocks
Bro Jake knows barely anything about hockey. He's like one of those ppl at work who watched a few games on TV during a playoff run. Has minimal knowledge about the game, how it works, or how the GM/mgmt side of it works. Completely out of his depth. Listening to him is painful. Pratt is just flat out annoying. My work allows me to have the radio on in the back ground most of the day so I have the misfortune of listening to these 2 almost every day. I go back and forth with 1410. I could just not listen to these two geriatric patients but I'm too much of a sports/hockey junkie. Anything NHL related I stay on 1040, all other sports 1410. No choice really but most days I'm more annoyed than entertained.

I'm sure you're work would let you have iTunes... rock out to something... or rave out.. or rap out... whatever floats your boat.
elvis15
I'm over pretty much everything, except I just can't see how other GMs in the NHL (particularly San Jose, who saw Lack twice out of the five meetings last year - one of which Lack was the 2nd star and the other he stopped 23 of 24 in relief of Markstrom) valued Lack so poorly. To see the Bos/SJ trade today with Jones where LA moved him out of their division and then Boston flipped him to San Jose for a 2016 1st and a prospect, yet we could only get a 3rd and a 7th for Lack. I'm really just so confused about what's going through everyone's minds and how the talks went on all these varying deals.
messier's_elbow
Been preaching this for a while, I sure hope it happens, i do think we are more than 5 yrs from being a contender though Our best prospect is Horvat in 5 yrs Horvat -24 Tanev-29 Edler 34 Cassels -24 Mcann -23 Virtanen -23 Demko -23 Shink-25 Beartschi-27 Kass-29 Boesser- 23 Gaunce -25 Who knows if Jensen, Grenier, vey, Hutton, Corrado, Clendening, Subban and tryamkin will amount to but we have great depth, just lacking that franchise 1D and maybe that 1C. In 5 yrs that core is still 3 yrs from it's prime. We do have to have a draft where we unload vets for picks otherwise we will spread out the rebuild over too long a time. We still need a 1DYeah this is a realistic expectation. We need a PMD badly. Hopefully we can get one next draft. We need some luck for once. Benning wanted draft picks this year.... this draft was like a double rainbow all the way for him. If he was willing to accept picks for next year and/or players, he would have gotten a better deal. Also, Lack being a pending UFA diminished his value plus teams knew the Canucks were desperate to get rid of a goalie... if they played it cool they could have gotten a better deal. But Gillis played it cool with the Schneider trade but then everyone went wtf and the soap opera began... so I don't really know what people want anymore. Full disclosure, no disclosure, public honesty, public lying, public not saying anything...
Miltt
Sounds like he has a good plan, maybe his plan was a little altered by not getting his way at the draft, but hopefully he learns from it and knows how to move forward. Meanwhile JB is doing what he can to keep he team competitive and exciting to keep the fans in their seats and guys positive. No-one wants to see 60 losses per year for -24 years while guys get ready. You have been fortunate that you've had several years of that in Edmonton if you want to witness that. Doesn't do anyone any good.

Tell me exactly how the Canucks did not play it cool, and how they would have got a better deal? What inside information do you have? Benning said for months that a goalie will get traded and he's looking for a 2nd rounder. He also said many times how badly he wanted a draft pick in this year's deep draft. Usually when negotiating you start higher so you compromise to what you want or don't mention your price at all. Gillis never mentioned his price at all and got a top 10 pick for the goalie he traded, although Schneids is way the hell better than Lack. This isn't inside info... this is common sense. Of course Benning and Linden try to be almost overly transparent with the media because Gillis was the total opposite. Hell, even throughout this whole thread Benning is getting dissed for saying the same old crap. But of course once nothing news worthy comes out it bites him. Why are the rich so whiny.... business owners, season ticket holders... for some reason you guys choose to punish yourselves. No I enjoy seeing people put themselves in pain by their own free will. I enjoy the behind the scenes drama more than the on-ice product. Anyway, I just thought it was funny that you hate the radio guys soooooooo much... yet you can't stop listening to them. MJDDawg
What bothers be about what I witnessed from our management team in the days leading up to and during draft day were things like: - Announcing publicly that they were going to trade one of the goalies. Why the need to publicly do this as any negotiating partner now has the advantage. And if it's not the value he believed it should be, then why do the deal? Did he really have to trade Eddie on draft day? - Announcing publicly before and at the draft that "they were trying to recover picks" and "hoping" to get a second rounder. Our chief scout GM needs to learn the art of keeping your cards close to the vest so as to not put himself in a position of weakness. - If they're in a rebuilding mode, and clearly they are, then why wouldn't they even consider going after a 22-year old potential franchise d-man in Hamilton. But to not even talk to the Bruins about him seems absurd and doesn't jive with a team that's rebuilding. - If reports are true and they'd been talking to the Sharks about the framework of a Bieksa deal for close to a month, how is it possible that come draft day there's a disageement on the year that 3rd round pick was to be for. Yes it may be all on Wilson, but then again maybe not. Just little things I know, but the still bug me.
