The Honey Badger
Brother Jake and Dave Pratt are the two least knowledgeable Sports radio hosts in Vancouver and quite possibly the world. What they do know how to do is run a radio show and pull in all the "chicken little" listeners with serving up controversy. Like Lemmings most of Vancouver hockey fans subscribe to these media ploys to sell papers and draw in listeners as opposed to having enough knowledge to form their own opinions. I know, I work in the business. It's all about the money and radio ratings and newspaper sales makes money. 100% agree.. I'm personally OK with Brother Jake because he's quite mellow and he usually shuts up. In a way, I can kind of tell that he acknowledges that he's not knowledgeable in the area. What really puts me off is Dave Pratt... All he does is trying to stir up stuff... He basically takes one thing and runs with it, then repeats it every hour. For that, I really like their morning call with Aaron Ward, because he always calls them out and pretty much embarrasses Pratt in a nice way. The Honey Badger
So in other words, not only was he getting lowballed, he screwed up and didn't get the best value offered to him. Not sure that line of thought makes it better. As I've said though, it doesn't even sound like San Jose had interest and Jones was one of if not their prime target. Why? How does that make sense? I understand the RFA status being an advantage, but is he really a better goalie? I think a lot of it has to do with perceived value of a player, not real value. Talbot and Jones got a lot of national media attention because they are in big city market, Lehner also got quite a bit for being in east coast. Talbot receives the most attention because he plays in New York. I think all the media coverage drives up the asset value. Whether we like it or not, Lack never receives the credit he deserves (same with the Sedins) because Vancouver doesn't get much media attention for being in Canada and on the west coast. As a result, the perceived value of Lack is lower than Jones, Talbot and Lehner. The fact that Lack is 27 and UFA next year also decrease his values. To many, he's still not proven to be a number 1 goalie, but he will likely demand starting goalie salary.

I used to love his shtick on the morning show, and the afternoon show before it. Dude was pretty hilarious from what I remember, but I guess everything gets old eventually. It's sad to see him out of his element, I I wonder if he had someone better then Pratt to co-host the show, would he shine at being a colour guy? Frazzy Desjardins
Yeah the idea that Benning thinks of the group as constant playoff contenders is scary. I'm hoping he is only saying it to keep the season ticket holders, jaded bandwagoners and business partners happy. every management has acted that way to us... and the media eats it all up, and thats why there are so many fair weather fans in Vancouver who always seem so disapointed... Dr. Crossbar
I'm fine with the team being really bad for a season. The thing that scares me though is that I think Benning actually believes they can compete. And will make moves to try and help that cause. No disrespect, seriously! Can you PROVE that the Canucks can't compete with absolute certainty?

Its not too far fetched that a whole bunch of players like Kassian,Horvat,Sven,Burrows and a player from Utica, could all overachieve next season..This is without Benning doing a thing...We are just removed from a 101 point season,it's tough to speculate how far we can drop...Canucks D will most likely be the Achilles heel. So, if they overachieve and win, wouldn't that be what you'd want as a fan instead of trying to fit in with naysayers on a message board?
SaintPatrick33
Man who cares if they dont make the playoffs... this team should be entertaining to watch, as we will have Bo, Sven and hopefully Jake to watch and see if we have a decent future. We also have piece to move at the deadline, it will be a wild 2016 summer, and hopefully a great season of progression for our youngsters, RIGHT WILLIE??? I wanted to move hammer and Jensen at the draft for Rhychel, 34 and 38 I hope we at least move Vrbata for a 1st and Higgins for a 2nd at the deadline. I'd be ok with resigning hammer but I also wouldn't mind moving him for a 1st. I'd love to sign Ladd next summer imo he would take over captaincy from henrik once he retires and before bo is ready This team needs a future 1d and so either we finish bottom 3 this yr ( which is unlikely) or we compile enough assets over the next few years to trade for one when the opportunity arises
JeremyCuddles
Nope. The deals done and it's the best deal we could get for a 34 year old with 1 year left on contract as well as an ntc. I would like to see another gm do better. The fact Bieksa wants to get extended by whatever team he'd get traded too should make the fact he has one year left irrelavent. Mr.53
I'm fine with the team being really bad for a season. The thing that scares me though is that I think Benning actually believes they can compete. And will make moves to try and help that cause. I don't get it. But why do we have to be bad for a season and ruin our winning culture? We have serious prospect depth for the first time in our history. Even when he had the Sedins we didn't have a group like this. Shinkaruk, Gaunce, MacCann, Cassels, Clendening, Corrado, Boeder, Virtanen, Beartschi, Markstrom, don't make me do the laundry list WE have quality prospects. What we need to do is develop an environment that is good for their development. As Bo how much it helped his development playing on a winning team, in a winning culture, making the playoffs. Hell, even Brendan Gaunce, and Hunter Shinkaruk talked about how being in a winning environment on the AHL level helped their development leaps and bounds. I hate this mindset of, lets have success everywhere, and root for our prospects, however, lets not have success on there NHL level, and in turn kind of root against our players and team. Next year we will have a large number of people of the age of 25 or younger. Tanev, Corrado, Clendening, Horvat, Baertschi, Kenins, Vey, etc. Don't hinder their development by making the team trash, have them be as good as can be and run for a playoff spot. And besides, what exactly is the point of having a GM that is good at drafting and evaluating talent, if you're just going to tank, or not try and even make the playoffs. The whole point of Jim Benning is that, whether our 2nd pick is the 35th, or the 55th, Benning is going to find a diamond in the pile that's there. It seems like that's exactly what he's done so far. We have 3 picks in the top 60 this year. Benning will without a doubt, acquire a top defensman among other things. We don't need to be trash, just to get a slightly higher draft pick. What we need is to develop a winning environment for the kids, like Bo and Kenins, who are already here, and a winning environment for the guys going next year, like Clendening and Baertschi, and the guys coming after that, like McCann, and Shinkaruk. I would much rather have these guys develop into their full top 6 potential and deal with a draft pick in the 20s, than tank, and have these guys not develop fully. In case anyone hasn't noticed in the past 4 years, we have had 4 first round picks in the 20 range. Gaunce, Shinakruk, McCann, and Boeser. That is a great group of kids. Anyway, I think Benning will try and contend. Besides, if we try to contend and we do get blown out of there water, which I don't think will happen, then at the deadline is when you start wheeling and dealing vets to make space for picks and prospects. This isn't just to you Deniro, although it seems i'm singling you out, but this is for everyone who thinks we shouldn't try to make the playoffs. The teams that are consistently in the best shape, are the teams that go for the playoffs every year. The teams that have a solid team worthy of making playoffs with a strong prospect pool about to burst onto the scene. That way we can insert cheap contracts, and/or trade them. Well we have the quality prospects, lets try to keep the quality team and stay competitive. Besides, that's the hockey I like to watch anyway.
