Was Sven Baertschi worth losing Oliver Kylington?

so did your crystal ball tell you so and so player will be available at so and so position? if he was rated that highly like you suggested.. then how would the canucks know ahead of time when they traded away the picks that he'll be available? i'm sure at the time of the trade JB feels SB will be better than whatever is left/available at 5x something spot

What does Baertschi bring that Mason Raymond and/or Jordan Schroeder wouldn't have provided?

Baertschi is too soft and will not be a playoff difference maker, He will just disappear just as Raymond and Schroeder did in the playoffs.

When will we start to build a team to win play off games?

For one he's already proved he doesn't trip everytime he enters the offensive zone. He's a natural winger, whereas JS was a small center. Waaaaay more skill than either of these guys. Higher upside. Drafted 13th overall.

Baertschi is a way better shooter than either of those guys, and has much better vision, which he absolutely displayed in his 5 games before playing in the AHL playoffs, for which he had a good run with 15 points in 21 games.

Even if he becomes another Mason. Keep in mind, Mason Raymond is 12th in his entire draft class in points and 11th in games played. Wouldn't be a disaster by any stretch. More likely that Kylington becomes another Matt Lashoff or Taylor Chorny vs a Keith Yandle or Kris Letang.

He traded away our 2014 2nd round pick for Linden Vey, when he could have just re-signed Santorelli. Santo ended up being better anyway, and would have cost us nothing to keep him.

the choice was schroeder for free, or vey for a 2nd. santo is 6 years older and not comparable imo.

Although Benning probably wouldn't have drafted Kylington anyway, I would have loved to have him here. We've had success with slick Swedish defencemen, and could have used a replacement for Hamhuis as well as a puck mover to play with our many shutdown defencemen. I'm not yet sold on Sbisa for this team's future, making Kylington a nice potential addition.

That being said, Baertschi's potential is through the roof. Point-per-game last season in the AHL, the Flames were stupid to trade away a former 1st rounder who hadn't really lost too much value for a 2nd round pick. The kid is going to be a top-6 forward in the NHL as quickly as next season and may well become a future first liner if we're lucky. He's got elite-level skill which is something the Canucks have lacked for a long time up front.

On the flip-side, if we had managed a Lack or Bieksa or Higgins for a 2nd round pick before the draft, we could have Baertschi and Kylington in our plans. To be honest, I would have taken him 23rd overall.

Edler - Tanev

Kylington - Corrado

Hamhuis - Clendening

Sbisa

Would have been sweet in 3 years time.

Baerschti will make the roster this season( has to or else he has to clear waivers), and I'm sure if he finds chemistry on a line he'll put up some points. This trade made sense for both teams and wasn't a bad trade for either. The Canucks needed to add a young winger with potential, with Sven has, if he can work on his defensive game and tougen up a little in the corners he'll no doubt be an excellant aquisition for the Canucks. The trade made sense for Calgary, as Sven wasnt really fitting in with the direction of the team anymore, we just have too many wingers with his offensive potential who are also a little more defensivly inclined, and Sven saw himself getting bumped further and further down the depth chart, but in Vancouver, with a fresh start, a new coach and a new system, he may very well round his game off and become that great 1/2 winger we here had hoped he would. The trade also helped Calgary by giving us the flexibility to offer what we did for Hamilton and still retain a pick in the 2nd round.

Also, there isnt much sense in comparing Baerschti to Kylington, as Calgary used the 60ths overall pick for Kylington, we used the 53rd(from Sven) to draft Anderson, and there is really no way of knowing who "won" the trade until we see how both players pan out for their clubs.

So the OPs question is kind of senseless, as Kylington wasnt a direct result of the Bearschti trade, and we don't know how either player will pan out for their squad for a bit of time yet.
