Remember 2006?

2006 - Cloutier got injured, and we threw Auld into a starting role without acquiring a decent backup. Ohlund and Salo were injured in the olympics. Jovo was out half of the year. We were decimated by blue line injuries, and waited till the deadline to pick up Carney, Weinch, Brown and Noronen. By then the team was already on a slide and those players were all awful.

Our top 6 was awesome. Four players with 70+ points, a 30+ goal scorer on the second line.

To be fair, the Sedins didn't lead the NHL in scoring until they were 30.

To answer your question, who knows? I certainly didn't see the Sedin's turning into the stars they ended up being.

Who knows is right, but the Sedins were taken 2nd and 3rd overall for a reason.

The Canucks don't need to tank now either. There are already plenty of good prospects coming up.

Compared to who? hockeysfuture.com has our prospects ranked 15th in the league. I get that fans are excited to actually have NHL quality players coming out of our system again. I'm excited too. But I think people tend to over-rate our prospect pool maybe because of that excitement. Also we still don't have anyone in the system that is or is projected to be a high end #1 D. Hockeyfutures have our best prospect as Virtanen, ranked 31st overall. Bleacher Report has him as the 27th overall prospect.

My point is that while so many were not paying attention, the rebuild began years ago. Look at the number of high picks in recent drafts:

  • 2012 Gaunce (1)
  • 2013 Horvat (1), Shinkaruk (1), Cassels (3)
  • 2014 Virtanen (1), McCann (1), Demko (2)
  • 2015 Boeser (1), Briesbois (3)
  • Others: Baertschi (1st 2011)

These are the top picks of recent years and they are all in the system and have a likelihood of becoming NHL players. Sure the quality as picks is mostly medium for the first round but you have to factor in character which goes a long way to how well they will develop. Something new with the Canucks since 2012 is that they own their own AHL team and as such have control over player development like they never have in their entire history. People in the know keep putting development ahead of drafting for almost all players. Benning is purposely selecting players who he thinks will develop well. That is the character factor that he keeps talking about.

Bottom line, there are lots of good players coming up AND development is central to the entire team system and strategy. So, if Hockeys Future ranks Canuck prospects as 15 out of 30 or average, I would suggest that they will trend upwards over the next few years.

I agree with you about #1D. That is the single biggest issue and it needs to be addressed asap imo.
