You need character but you also need an elite level of skill.

Kane and Toews have both.

Kopitar, Williams and Brown had them both.

Lucic, Krejci and company had them.

Hopefully the Canucks young kids have a high enough level of skill to score goals. I don't doubt their character, but I doubt their scoring ability.

Wow. After the OP made a very intelligent post with great insight, all the idiots on this board STILL find a way to slander Benning.

God I hate this idiotic, clueless fan base. Around 97% of our fans have literally no idea what's going on.

Agreed, I hate this fan base. So embarrassing, time and time again.

Troll?! I don't even know what that means?! I had to wait to be approved by admin--so yes I did "just join".

I'm a 40 year old father of twin boys, who grew up in Prince George and was raised in YVR. I played a myriad of competitive sports and hockey at a high level. I'm not just talking out of my a$$.

I was there in 1994 and in 2011 (meaning physically present at the hockey games) and I'm passionate about sport in general and my beloved Canucks.

I've been following close and had wanted to share my perspective and opinion. If "trolling" means that I have a life...than yes I'm a "troll". My twins have been active in competitive sports and Montessori since 3 years of age so registering and commenting are the last things I want to do.

It's a holiday week here and I took this opportunity to voice my opinion--I've worked hard for this free time. I take offense to a**holes like yourself who make totally baseless and insidious comments...

Zero fu**s given if you ban me. I know what it takes to be successful. I guess you really are the spineless mungs that burned my city down--again. Pathetic. I'm glad you could put your joystick down and stop gaming (or viewing free porn) to state your comments.

Genius.

To the true fans: Canucks will trump the Hawks as far as dynasty or legacy is concerned. More importantly, for everyone involved...we will have a quality, competitive, durable product for decades. Resulting in: Championships.

What a waste of time. Go, Canucks, go!

Dont worry man, I for one welcome dissenting opinions, that is the point of having a Forum such as this.

LET FREE SPEECH LIVE!

I understand where you are going with the pats analogy, its just that they are at the top of all other franchises in their ability to win and stick to a plan.

Haters gonna hate jerry, don't let them get you down.

I like your analogy - hopefully Van can reproduce at least some of the Pats success.

I'm behind your theory 100% Gerry (even though I hate the pats). Many Vancouver fans (some of my best friends ) openly admit they are bandwagon fans, which means when the Canucks do well they over rate our team and players positively and when they do poorly they throw this team and its players under the bus. I am a real fan and I am so damn happy that Trevor and Jim did not over react to what other teams in the Pacific are doing around us. Yes they got better, but it does not mean we need to "re-sell" the farm and destroy everything we have built foundation wise to try and keep up with them. Benning can draft (look at Utica) and he will consistently find diamonds in the rough (I believe it). Like you said, next year we will have a plethora of young character guys, that will be surrounded by 1-2 solid free agents with character (not too mention the Sedins) and we will start our ascent back into the upper tiers of the Pacifc Division. I for one hope we barely make the playoffs next year so our character kids can scratch, claw, fight for each other, and then get knocked out of the playoffs so they end up with a hunger that only true character players can feel. A feeling they will have their whole careers and will make them lose sleep over that sting every day until the new season starts. So to all those and I quote " spineless mungs that burned my city down--again. Pathetic. I'm glad you could put your joystick down and stop gaming (or viewing free porn) to state your comments (man you nailed this one)," enjoy your band wagon type existence !!

OP - I too see exactly what you mean by your comparison...40+ years of futlility followed by a couple decades of success (and continued success). But as stated above, please don't let the boneheads on here deter you from the fanbase in general. The Canucks are a very polarizing team in terms of opinions. And CDC is somewhat bipolar in it's opinions...but please understand that it is far and away not a great cross-section of Canucks fans in general.

As someone stated above, ignore the obvious bandwagon fans (careful though, I've been sucked into pointless arguments with children on here...both literal children and those with a child-like mind)...just rise above and know that you've got intelligence on your side and no matter what they can't take that away from you.

So to address your original point, I see the comparison clearly. It will take a couple years to right the ship and bring in the character and grit, added to a couple seasons of futility to gain a high draft pick (a la Chicago) and we should be set and on our way to many great seasons. Same as the Pats play for their true dedicated fans, as will the Canucks for theirs (not the bandwagoners).

Welcome to CDC and thanks for your insight.

Hey I am with you Jerry I feel the same way. 2011 was great but nothing beats the 94 run. To me that was the team I can never forget. 2011's team was skilled but lacked the "Character" of 94's team. Your anology with the Pats makes me realize what JB is trying to do. If its to bring to this city a team similar to 94's I am all for that.

Yeah...the 94 team was a goal away...damn Lafayette. 2011 Canucks set the record for the least amount of goals ever scored in a 7-game finals. We shouldn't kid ourselves, if it wasn't for Lou, we would have been swept.

I wholeheartedly agree with what you said.

I don't get why people are trying to argue with you saying that the Pats have cup rings and Canucks don't. You weren't saying that and that wasn't your point at all. You were comparing the Canucks to the uprising Pats before they became great. People don't seem to be understanding what you're saying.

Character and skill win championships. You need great defense and a great coach to get there. Hopefully our young guns like Virtanen, Cassels, Horvat, etc can turn into great players of today like Toews, Kane, etc. It's obviously a longshot for us to get Toews and Kane type of guys, but they weren't who they are right away. You have to build your guys into those type of people.

Horvat has already shown brilliance in the NHL. He was a 3rd/4th liner and was one of our best players night in and night out last season. This was without any kind of elite level skill on his wings.

I think we have something special in Cole Cassels as well. Dude was one of the best players on his team and went on to win the Memorial Cup. That winning atmosphere will be good for him to carry to the AHL and the NHL.

It's hard to say anything at this point in terms of where the team is heading, but I fully believe in Linden and he believes in Benning.

You can somewhat say the same about the Bruins though. If Tim Thomas didn't go on his run, they wouldn't have made it either.

At the end of the Benning media session on CDC Benning keeps saying "we aren't done"

He says it once in reference to the the center position when discussing options for the 4C spot - any one have any insights on this?

I would think he's contacting prospective young UFA centres to see if they are interested in taking a salary that the Canucks can afford. Too bad for him that Grigorenko isn't still available for trade.

i don't think benning is convinced, that they have the 4th line centre they want...he will continue to upgrade this team as the right players become available...or willie have vey or gaunce to chose from.
